Salt

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I saw a headline about the Queen Mary University study which states that eating too much salt can trigger obesity.

They think it alters our metabolism and the way we absorb fat. Nothing is really clear yet, it's all speculation.

The World Action on Salt and Health group has always claimed it adds to obesity as people go on the drink sugary drinks.

When you look at the ingredients of most processed food, both sweet and savoury, the list often contains both salt and sugar.

Has anyone reduced salt and seen a subsequent reduction in weight?

No but a couple of fat people I know pour sooooo much salt over their food that I don;t honestly believe they can taste anything else.

It's not healthy.

An excess of salt will normally cause fluid retention.

I would be interested to see if there is any difference between the chemically created sodium and more natural sea/rock salt.

I haven't seen anything on that, but then I have only been skim reading after seeing the headline whilst feeding my mother yesterday.

I am a self confessed salt junkie! I would cake everything in it. But I don't. Unless it's chips.

Whoever invented salted caramel should be knighted IMHO!

I've often wondered why most of the people in my immediate family are heavier than me. Both my mother and my brother (who is only 2 years my senior) have diabetes. But I was brought up with the same diet as him.

However, I have always consumed less salt then they do. They put extra salt on everything, and lots of it. I, on the other hand, don't like too much salt on anything. When I was younger my mother would have to give me my dinner before she finished seasoning it because I didn't like the way the salt tasted in it. A doctor actually told me once that I wasn't getting enough salt...

Anyway, not saying it caused their weight issues, I would say the shit they ate caused that, but I think it does show a possible reason for the drastic differences in our weights even though our diets were relatively similar (and obviously our genes are similar as well).

Interesting.

I tend to use herbs and spices as an alternative to salt. Only use salt on the very very rare occasions I have chips.

You need to go cold turkey. Food will taste better at the end of it - I promise!

I generally don't use salt. Pepper on the other hand I love. I could happily give up salt but not pepper.

I'm still fat.

Interesting that you should be told you didn't have enough salt. Do you get cramp?

My sister adds extra salt to everything but she is by far the thinner of the two of us.

My initial thought of it is that it's bullshit and a coincidence by association, for example, if you eat more sugary foods you are more likely to season your food with extra salt.

I'm not denying there could be something more biological to it but I'd be a little sceptical unless the evidence was fairly solid.

It's true. Coming from a West Indian background salt fish stew is still a favourite.

Yeah, I used to have stomach problems when I was younger and the doctor said I had deficiencies causing it, one of which being salt (though not the only one). So I try to put a little bit of salt on things when I eat them now as an adult.

But hearing the split on this thread, sounds like you might as well flip a coin with the salt intake/weight correlation

I do try to avoid salt where possible but it's already in so much food these days can be hard to avoid it. Never had problems with my weight though.

I agree. They haven't proven anything yet.

I just thought I'd if anyone had experienced any change after reducing their salt. Lots of people here seem to have a special diet of one sort or another.

I rarely add additional salt to my food (chips demand salt) but I like cake and chocolate so accept that I'm cake and chocolate fat. It would be great if I could achieve a weight loss and keep my cake/chocolate just by reducing my salt.

I changed my diet just over a year ago. I now don't eat processed food at all. I eat lots of veg. Basically a good balanced diet. Plus I have been exercising a lot to and I have lost 3.5 stone. I feel lots better for it. And my self esteem is higher than its been for years.

Reading the ingredients list on most processed food you can't help but be assaulted by salt.

You need some salt in your diet.

I'm obese... I hardly ever use salt and eat very little processed food. Not that that's very scientific

The science on this is sketchy anyway. It's still being explored.

i only add salt to chips and eat those only once in a blue moon - there is enough salt naturally in the foods we eat - we simply dont need it
