I'm mucking about with targeting specific muscle groups which are not getting any benefit from riding, dancing and swimming!
I know they are new exercises and bound to ache a bit - but I am wondering how much other people have to do to cause significant pain. By pain I mean making it difficult to do normal slow movements like getting in and out of a car or something, and enough pain that you can still feel it on a full concurrent dose of ibuprufen, paracetamol and codeine for up to 4 days later.
Could you make yourself hurt that much without any particular discomfort during the actual training - just a bit of a grin and 'Ooh I can feel a bit of a burn there', ie never enough to stop you doing whatever it is you're doing? Or would you have to actually be stopped by the pain of it at the time to hurt that much after?
I'm wondering if I still have some metabolic issues to sort even though I can do stuff like front crawl for 40 mins non stop.

"The first exercise class I did last year I had the DOMS so bad for 4 days after I couldn't even sit for a pee without my eyes watering! It was awful! Didn't hurt while I was in the class at all. "
Right - were you sedentary at the time or doing other things anyway? |

That was the first proper exercise I had done for about 2 years aside from the odd jog x |

My aches can last for 2 - 3 days but I have grown to enjoy those pains now.
First time I did squats I could not walk properly for a week and it was a struggle doing anything. I also stretch thoroughly now to make sure its not so bad. |

Would the aches be enough to totally stop you doing that kind of movement 'til they were gone, or would they 'loosen up' if you did some more? |

I know that wasn't for me but that first time there was no way I could of powered through it. Now I might be a bit achy and I'll still crack on. I don't get it after cardio classes just weight based ones x |

Leg day I hurt for around the next 24hrs. General aches they never stop. If I take a break from the gym I still ache the first 3 days from what the exercise then I have a 1 day gap and then I start aching from lack of movement. |

When im in the gym and training a specific bodypart I always try and train it 'to destruction' or until it stops working...I have been known to crawl out of the gym.
The beauty of it is that you can just train something else the next day..
Diet, supplements and stretching definitely help with the aching.
And remember to vary your training regularly to avoid plateaus.
Keep it up, it will be worth it |

Right - 'bit achey' is fine, I will dance hard three nights running cos I know an ache will loosen up as soon as I start again. But this was more like a proper pain that would make me believe I had to rest until it stopped hurting. I still went swimming - that's easy for me and would loosen things up but for a few hours only. |

Ok, so when you crawl out of the gym, how long do you get significant pain in that muscle group for?
I did find l-carnitine helped me with muscle metabolism before and I have only just gone back on it. |

Yeah, have a Google about DOMS. Delayed onset muscle soreness. I think they hurt more than giving birth the first time. Ha! Trying to run around after a 4 year old when I could bend my legs without shreiking was no fun!! |

Sometimes 3 days.
I find a good protein helps straight after a workout, with BCAA to help process it. |

It seems from that article it rarely causes damage to work through it so I shan't worry. I'd rather just swim and ride til it hurts a bit less anyway, but I don't want it to interfere with my dancing, that pisses me right off! |

I never go to the gym with a plan and many times I have gone in and ended up training arms as everything else was busy but while wearing a compression top...watching me trying to get it off afterwards is fucking hilarious....pumped but with arms as useless as a T rex and as weak as a poorly kitten.. |

"Yes, what I am trying to do is learn how to manage the process a bit better so I don't miss a dance cos some stupid PT did too many dead lifts with me two days before lol!"
Think that may be your problem right there. You have a PT. Exercise for yourself and no one else, or you perform for them rather than listening to what your own body can do.
I was going to write this before my dinner but was too hungry.. I was going to say, "are you sure you are not over doing yourself?" I think you are. I used to go to the gym pretty regularly (4 days a week) - more routine as I was a member than anything fastidious. My workout was always a mixed a work out, with relaxation exercises mid way through. Though I would include a decent 30min warm up and a absolute minimum 1hr for saunas and hydro at the end. I will still today, not join a gym without these facilities.
I have always been around 10.5 stone. but my leg presses were exceeding 400kg (believe it our not), I simply couldn't add any more weight to the machines. I never ached or had one pain. I think you are asking too much of yourself within too little a time frame. Exercise should be built on, fibres, tendons and ligaments need to be strengthened and muscles need to be trained up to take weight increases, not snapped into asking 15 or 25+kg lifts or what... |

Smashed my leg press PB the other week. 450kg for 5...didnt know if I was going to pass out or shit..
Same issue, cant fit more weight on. Next step is having someone sat on the plate..
Tried a new training method today...have face planted a couple of doors when my arms just collapsed rather than the door move.. |

Yup I'm the same as now I can after warming up power through if I had to on that muscle group. But I work my different muscle groups now which enables me to get the best of of what I am doing. |

great guns - best way to get at it :D great fun :D
(sorry for keep deleting my stuff - I keep remember bits .. it's ages since I have bothered breaking sweat lol)
I would start on 200 odd.. then just add weights, always in either 20 or 15 reps. I know this isn't the done thing but I warmed on lighter weights and worked to the heavier end in 25kg increments. By the time I had got to 400+ I had done a fair few and my muscles were warmed through. Felt light as a feather being honest. I never trained for mass. |

It's Ok, I've just been seeking advice so far and had a couple of assessment/taster sessions. The first was with a total incompetant it seems, hurt my back and totally overloaded my quads, which are very dominant anyway. Two days ago I went to see someone else, very competant, and we just played around with getting hams and glutes to fire properly - so they're a bit sore is all. I've just carried on swimming for now, and I'll add in a few classes gradually. My core and cardio are fine, my shoulders are very strong from swimming so much, and last time I did about 4 months of gym mostly machines on my own I found it all too easy, nothing ever hurt - I didn't think it was supposed to!
But I now realise I have some specific muscle imbalances I want to correct, so there will be some aches and pains to start with I think! I just wanna manage those to disrupt as little as possible, I have horses to ride and lindyhop to dance! Starting Northern soul dancing this weekend too! |

I can't say I've ever troubled the leg press machine for anything other than accessory work. What does a 400kg leg press translate to in squat terms? |

I rarely squat over 100kg..but thats because I have a pelvic imbalance and hypermobility in my SI joints |

Would single leg work (split squats or similar) help that? Or totally fuck it up? |

I've had intensive training sessions where the pain is just faltering by day 4, but has been agony beforehand. I've felt I must be over 100.
The reality is that I could have introduced myself more gradually to newer stuff but didn't. So much pain isn't necessary as I think a gradual start would achieve the same, over a couple of months, as the very intensive and painful kick, first off. |
