My Iphone wont charge using anything but an Iphone charger and it's starting to piss me off .

Is it unusual for Apple products to require proprietary connectors, despite the existence of perfectly adequate universal equivalents?

I bought a couple from the pound shop a while back cant remember exactly how much they cost but they work well until my phone notices and shouts at me .
