I got pulled up by a colleague who advised me that I was was offending her as a Christian as I was having a conversation with another colleague where I said "oh god that's awful" she advised me that I'm using the lords name in vain...I'm slightly confused and not here to offend anyone... |

Yeah using the lords word in vain is offensive to many christians. It's not illegal to say it though so she can't do anything except complain really. |

All a matter of prospective and how thin skinned (Or even bloody minded the 'religious person') is. If she thinks all others must be like her that's unfair. I have a friend who is a Pagan and as she said, so many things we say all day are Christian in origin but people say them as just normal language and mean nothing by it. Good morning is a shortened form of God's morning to you (They say Merry meet I believe). The point is what you said was not INTENDED as a religious comment just a 'saying'. |

People take offence too easily nowadays. I was brought up in a christian family and agree that even though i do it, its not nice to take the lords name in vain and you never hear people say "oh my Allah!" Or "oh my Harry Krishna!" But nonetheless i think it was a slight over reaction on your colleagues behalf and as the saying goes 'people in glass houses shouldnt throw stones'.
I hope this helps. Stevie. |

If you're doing it all the time or having a massive rant 'oh for christ sake, this god forsaken computer is getting on my god dammed nerves' I'd say she is over sensitive especially as she is earwigging anyway |

It's a massively over sensitive reaction on her part . She needs to get a grasp of reality and you can help her by taking her to one side and telling her she is going to find it hard to mix with such a pious attitude . |

Its work, just try to avoid her, things said in jest tend to sound a lot less funny when repeated to HR. As you didnt do it to intentionally offend her, tell her so, apologise, and call her all the names under the sun in your head and know you are the bigger person. |

A colleague of mine had something similar because someone presumed she was muslim and they felt her office wear was in her words disgusting.
(she wore knee length skirts and only ever showed a small amount of clevage)
Long story short after a few run ins thr offended party was diciplined by HR....
Saying oh god is just a turn of phrase these. aif your religious and it bothers you then maybe you shpuld just accept it for what it is two words... |

some people take the useage of the words 'god' or 'jesus'a bit seriously..
so it offends them when you use these words as an expletive..say you hit you thumb and said oh fucking jesus christ that hurt, they would say this was using the 'lords' name in vain..
ie not in the reverential way they would like it used..
having been a non conformist person all my life i am not the best person to say how to deal with this.. theres the religion is a personal choice route, there is the you conform to what she wants and dont use it or theres the im not offending anyone im just using words, or theres the outright, its my choice what i say and you are too sensitive approach...
unless the colleague actually tells everyone in their lives that they are offending them, when they use the word god etc, or you work for a Christian based company, i would just say that youd prefer it if they kept their personal faith views out of the workplace and therefore out of your face..but as i dont know your situation...
personally i would take the "its not my issue, that you take offence, Christians as far as i was taught, are meant to be unconditionally loving and non judgmental about others " route..
or the harsher, dont push religion into my face, otherwise ill do it all the more ..but then im an annoying person when it comes to people telling me what to do.. hope you understand what she meant now though..good luck with this one..id hate to be in your shoes, because id just want to play with it.. |

There are many things people (of any creed, culture, social background etc) can take offense to if they so choose. Equally people can choose to see some conversation as just figure of speech or momentary lapse of awareness.
I think the issue is more in the intent - if I think somebody deliberately attacks my values (be it Christian or whatever) then I would see it as offensive. But only then... and tbh it is incredibly rare. |

Firstly there's worse words you could use and would offend !

Tell her that she offends you as a Pagan with her Christian values.
Ask her if she she is certain you were referring to her God or one of your own.
Then ask her to look up the word God in the Oxford English Dictionary.
If that fails then just tell her to Toughen Up Princess. |

She's entitled to her beliefs and you are entitled not to share her beliefs.
I find it offensive that anyone thinks they can pressure others to live by their standards.
You wouldn't tell her she should say, "Oh God", so she shouldn't tell you not to.
Religious people need to realise the world does not revolve around their beliefs and they're not entitled to dictate how others behave. |

I get offended by people who try to impose their religious beliefs upon me. I don't complain to them about it though.
She is entitled to her beliefs and to be offended by you saying that and even to make you aware that she finds it offensive. However, you are also entitled to not agree with her and use that phrase as you see fit. As long as you are not being deliberately offensive and directly insulting her then its tough shit really.
I would have said something along the lines of. I'm sorry if you found it offensive but I don't. Its just a figure of speech to me that I use as part of my normal vocabulary and not meant to upset or offend you. I will try to be mindful of it in conversation with you out of common courtesy but if I'm speaking to anyone else and say it then it isn't any of your business really. No offence.

Your colleague may or may not have been making a valid point depending on what words she actually used to you.
Why should Christians or anyone else have to put up with offensive language in the work place?
It is exactly like the old dispute of pictures of nude women and nude calendars in the work place the general opinion these days is they are offensive to certain individuals and should not be displayed.
Life is about give and take but it seems on here many people seem to think one should accept offensive behaviour.

Well I'm a Christian and mix with Christians on a regular basis and language is as bad as any other persons at times... I've been sat in church and our vicar speaks about how it is easy to say words such as God or Jesus in that way but it doesn't mean we are blasphemous!!
So we would recognise this person as not being indicative of how a Christian should be and would identify her as the type who give the church a bad name for speaking in that way. That sort of direct approach only alienates those of us who recognise the realities of life.
You probably wouldn't ever want to do this in reality but say to her, if it happens and she says something, comment along the lines of how does she not know that you may have been starting in prayer at that time and calling out to God in speaking in that way!! That may flummox her |

May I also suggest when you see her next that you quote to her a verse of my favourite psalm, 141 verse 3, "Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth, keep watch over the door of my lips!!"
After she has got over her surprise of you quoting the bible then advise her to heed those words, which basically tell us to think before we speak as what we say can offend!! |

Clearly you need a neutral term that doesn't offend anybody's Faith but also talks about it being somebody upstairs' fault. I would suggest using phrases like "fuck the boss this stuff's all wrong" or "shit that twatting boss everything's gone bollocks up". That should work |

Your point was to partially say that how can there be a God if these things exist. My response was to identify the Christian answer would be that the plaques of this world are caused by the sins of the human race! That will obviously be an implausible situation in respect of things like cancer whoever it blights but I was just trying to represent the potential answer the OP would receive to your comment if given |

If there was nothing wrong with the world then it wouldn't be 'the world' - it would be 'heaven'. Page 1 of the bible in case you missed it.
I'm not asking you to believe that, just saying there's no logic to your point. You might not like the idea of a god that makes you earn your 72 virgins, but what part of "don't eat that fucking apple" wasn't clear? |

My point was to totally say that God doesn't exist! I find the notion of an omnipotent being who created everything and can control mankind or inflict plagues, floods and pestilence utterly ludicrous and archaic. I also think that the reason there's so many wars, rapes, murders and general other acts of evil is mostly (not all) down to people believing that God exists. We'll all be a massive step closer to world peace once we shrug off religion. |

After all this taking the mickey... I think you did the right thing. If someone gets upset... that's their honest feeling... you upset them... and in a work environment its just not worth questioning that. It's just better to apologise, make a mental note about that individual, and move politely on. Well done |

Right well that's a poor show really. The thing is, most the advice here is about what's best for your ego.
My question is what's best for your career? Will it effect your job performance if she hates you? Or can she enhance your work status if she loves you?
In my job, people can make things very difficult for you by doing things as slowly as possible which makes me look incompetent. That might be twatty but it's the real world. So I'll play the game because it's easier than not. I reserve the right to still think they are an idiot. But I don't go to work for a social life so keep your eyes on the prize... if she doesn't matter then do what you please... |

I think the thing that some people miss with this whole thing is that to many theists the word "God" has as much heartfelt meaning as their mother's name. If you were stood around cursing things by using this person's mother's name it would be really obvious how offensive you were being. And that's kind of how theists tend to see it. I'm not speaking on this person's behalf... I'm just trying to give you another perspective on the matter
Try thinking about someone you really love and then imagine everyone idly using their name as a form of slander. I'm guessing you'd get tired of it eventually |

Nope screw em,
Their choice to believe
Not their choice to control the actions of others,
I could believe not working would make us all healthier people, it isn't true and financially crippling, but if I chose to ignore the obvious facts and run with it anyway I DO NOT have the right to openly stop others from talking about work,
Offended is a problem for the offended not the offender, for a person free of religion God or Jesus are just words and we do have a right to use them without indignation from those that CHOOSE to beleive
But as has been said, it's your job at stake so you will more likely have to grit your teeth and accept her complaint, even though you are not in the wrong,
Good God there has been a lot of religious claptrap in these forums lately, I think I miss cock pic threads,

People these days are quick to be offended and seem to think it's some kind of terminal illness when they choose to be offended. That's all it is,a choice. She has listened to something she was not part of and has chosen to be offended by something you said.

"Offended is a problem for the offended not the offender"
I think you'll find most corporations and most HR departments see this the other way round. It is an indiviudual's right to claim offence, and the system should always weigh in their favour... as long as they don't abuse this right. In this case the person didn't report the OP, she merely took it up with her herself... which was the best way of going about it imo. |

I had a similar encounter with one of my Christian colleagues after using the same expression, I said I'm sorry please forgive me, however if you aren't fond of taking the lords name in vain perhaps your shouldn't constantly be updating your Facebook status with OMG everything something is shocking to you oh and by the way what's the lords take on eavesdropping? She never responded until later that day when her status was "OMG never guessed what one of my colleagues dared to say to me today" |

Not necessarily. Are they simply culturally conditioned rather than absolutes? I would think that forty years ago many more people would have been offended by "taking God's name in vain' than today.
Being offended may simply be based on our own idiosyncratic values and beliefs. Cultural norms may simply mean that more people are offended by certain things than others? |

I've made the personal choice that I don't believe in God. I'm perfectly happy with that choice.
I've made the personal choice that as long as they're not hurting others, anyone else can believe what they like in terms of religion.
I've made the personal choice that I object to being expected to kowtow to the beliefs of others when they are not my own. My beliefs are no more and no less important than those of anyone else.
I often wonder why I've never heard an atheist try to spontaneously convert a religious person, and most atheists respect the right of others to follow their chosen religion, why the hell the religious can't extend the same courtesy to atheists.
I think I'm going to start an atheists group and start knocking on doors at random times to try to push my views on people who don't want them. |

Lol ... have we been reading the same forum as each other. Atheists alllllways try and convert theists... its one of their defining features, their proselytizing. I can't recall ever hearing a believer on these forums actively trying to persuade others to accept that there is a god... but atheists allllways pounce on theists and call them out as irrational fools.
To be honest I'm somewhat amazed by the emotions that get raised when someone merely mentions the word "God". It seems so threatening to some people. It's almost like claiming you're over an Ex and then flying into a rage every time his/her name is mentioned. It feels like there's some unfinished business there. |

I agree about choosing to be offended. But in the cases of racism, sexism and homophobia we choose to be offended too. However more people are offended by racism, sexism and homophobia these days than they were in the past, while less so by 'blasphemy'. I imagine that is due to cultural conditioning. I guess the issue for me is in some cases it appears ok to feel offended but in others it is not and that is largely due to cultural conditioning and informed by own values and beliefs which may or may not conform with cultural norms.
I think in the OPs case. She was right to apologise for unintentionally offending the woman and then walk away. As for blasphemy being offensive .... Oh God I don't want to go there

It feels like there's some unfinished business there."

I frequently see atheists defending their right not to believe to theists that won't leave them in peace.
I've yet to see an atheist start the discussion in order to try to convert a theist.
I respect the right of others to choose their own religious and spiritual beliefs and I'd like those others to let me choose mine without badgering me about it. |

That's a sweeping generalisation!!
I'm a non-believer and I've never called anyone an irrational fool (except maybe Daily Fail readers but if the cap fits!)
Believe what you like. It's none of my business. I'd like to think I'd not deliberately offend someone or their beliefs. Each to their own.
Don't put us all in the same bucket... I don't want to be tarred with that brush thank you very much. |

I work with a Christian and every now and then he rolls his eyes & mumbles something which is largely ignored when he hears a For Gods Sake / Jesus Christ.
But as we said once before to him what would he prefer to hear a For Fucks Sake instead , he had no answer to that. |

Being brought up by a Catholic mum, I don't say "Jesus Christ" in everyday language but do say "For God's sake" & I would never tell someone I found it offensive, especially if I wasn't part of the conversation.

I'd have said something along the lines of "well, your noseyness offends me for a start and don't get me started on the offence your God causes. Any God who can inflict cancer on children, rape, murder, war, famine etc doesn't deserve an ounce of respect".
I'd then have taken a poo in her desk drawer.
And if you know anything about Christianity then you would know that the issues you raised that blight this world are caused by the actions of the human race not by an unhelpful God!!
You've totally missed my point. But, out of interest, how are children with cancer due to the actions of the human race?
Your point was to partially say that how can there be a God if these things exist. My response was to identify the Christian answer would be that the plaques of this world are caused by the sins of the human race! That will obviously be an implausible situation in respect of things like cancer whoever it blights but I was just trying to represent the potential answer the OP would receive to your comment if given
My point was to totally say that God doesn't exist! I find the notion of an omnipotent being who created everything and can control mankind or inflict plagues, floods and pestilence utterly ludicrous and archaic. I also think that the reason there's so many wars, rapes, murders and general other acts of evil is mostly (not all) down to people believing that God exists. We'll all be a massive step closer to world peace once we shrug off religion."
And you will find that your statement is totally incorrect!! You actually claim that the majority of assaults in this country are caused by religion?? That the majority of myrder is caused by religion? Was World War 1 and 2 caused by religion? The answer to all those is no!! Not sure if you will know this but the Encylopedia of War breaks down the causes of war and only 4% of nearly 2000 conflicts were caused by religion. It is too easy to blame religion for causing autrocities but quite simply the belief of many when this happens is caused by the distorted view portrayed by media that we see and hear! If looked at a few of those. They aren't trying to convert anyone, they're discussing the effect science has on religion and how religion fits into our changing world.
I've not seen anyone start a thread demanding a theist prove God exists, but I've seen many threads started by theists demanding atheists justify their beliefs.
A lot of theists seem to think it a personal affront that some people don't believe in their deity. At the worst, atheists believe theists to be a bit deluded.
If the theists leave me to my beliefs, I'll stay out of theirs. If not, let's just say it could get messy. |

They are each making negative statements about the irrelevence of religion and how silly it is to believe in a god. That is in no way a neutral discussion of "the effect science has on religion and how religion fits into our changing world" as you put it. Many of these threads also talk of the hypocrisy of swingers being religious. If you don't want to read it as passive agressive proselytizing then I guess that's your choice... but these are clearly examples of atheists who actively start up debates with a view to try and convince people that being religious and/or believing in a god is wrong.... which shows your original remark was mistaken... and that was all I was looking to show |

I don't think it did, there was no suggestion that other deaths are acceptable just not acknowledge as not part of a religious discussion
until today I have avoided as much as I could these religious threads, because I dislike arguing with believers, they often when faced with facts take one irrelevant aspect and blow it out of proportion masking the original facts raised,
So I think I'll back out here, Agree disagree and all that,

Indeed I did raise my point with the OP and argued that this person had a distorted view with making comment about what she said in using the term God... If someone is offended by me I'd assume it's because I've purposely said or done something I know would upset me.
I can't for the life of me see why someone would be offended by something that was done without malice, there's a difference between someone using the wrong terminology through ignorance rather than malice.
In this instance he/she seems to be offended cause she was poking her nose into someone else's conversation and if they had told me they where offended I would of said that's OK I don't mind be as offended as you want. |

That said, if someone has let me know that something I say has offended them, I'd probably try not to say it around them, as far as I could remember. A bit like not swearing in front of my mam. |
