Forget that . So the uk needs more sperm donors, and they intend to do this by selling the act as more 'macho' or by appealing to men's generosity . Both of which seem a little bit 'there's a good boy if you do it the girls will like you, '

This is one of the most critical reasons now. However I imagine a lot of men didn't do it because they think they would feel embarrassed to go somewhere, book in at a desk, fill in forms and wank into a receptacle. Other 'can't be arsed reasons' I'm also contributed to the lack of willing donors. There will also be those who disagree with it based on their moral code. But the freedom for the child to contact the donor once they are 18 will have put off many, who may have been willing donors before the policy change. |

Have discussed it here, would certainly donate. Yeah, there's a bit of a faff, a few appointments to make a commitment to, a bit of travel. But if it works out, you end up changing someone's life for the better in a way that just volunteering down at the local charity shop or doing a sponsored fun-run doesn't compare to.
Unfortunately, have missed the boat by a few months, as the cutoff is 41. |

Loss of anonymity for donors, no right to see your offspring but the child may be visiting you when you least expect it - crazy rules if I've understood it right. Also interesting that 80-90% are rejected / not accepted, which is why there are so little. |

The process is so difficult, I signed up a few years ago. Family history for three generations is discussed, then sperm count, medical screenings, and psychological screening as sperm donors can be contacted when a child reaches 18 by the offspring. It's a long and arduous process and not just a case of turn up, unload and go. |

Yes, and would be happy to leave details for future contact (if they wanted). They do let you know (if you want) how many successful births, which year, and what gender.
Already having children, I wouldn't have the same level of angst as someone else, it wouldn't be a surprise down the line. Guessing that someone without children (and a potential marriage and complexity ahead of them perhaps) might be more concerned.
Ultimately, it's an altruistic gesture - much like giving blood to help someone else (just more of an onerous - and of course onanist - commitment for a while.) |

My friend was an egg donor. She was told how many children her eggs produced and that she could be contacted when they reach 18. |

I'd be happy to donate but I'm too old and had the snip years ago. Also I think I'd be fascinated if the offspring turned up 18 years or so later. I would have given life to that person and though I'd not particularly want to be 'emotionally' involved I'd be happy to know who they were and how their life is panning out. |

If I donate sperm and never hear from the donation again and live safe in the knowledge it just helped another family I would do it,
If after 18yrs I'am liable to contacted by the child then I want to see his first 18yrs not miss out on them
So no I wouldn't donate under the current system |

The anonymity thing is huge, plus the fact that you have to go there twice a week for four weeks and can't cum for two days prior to each donation or something along those lines. That's a lot of effort and even then a lot of sperm get rejected.
I hate the marketing campaign too. As a lot of the people wanting sperm donation will be couples where the man is infertile, how is "be macho, fertilize these eggs" appropriate at all? |

and apparently only £35 its not worth the hassle! On a more serious note I agree completely, had a friend in a similar position really not sure such adds would of had helped him in anyway. |

I remember reading about this when the lawsuit started (it's just been thrown out).
It's a difficult one as there are women out there who would give their lives to be a Mother who have been through IVF unsuccessfully and who would be happy to have their own child regardless. And surely you wouldn't even need/want an excuse to get away from a racist family or an unwelcoming neighbourhood?
But then again, moving and upheaval does cost money, and who knows what else this clinic's negligence could've mixed up. - So as a lot of companies only learn a lesson through financial loss, I can KIND of see their point... |
