House envy...

Edinburgh

I came down to the Borders to visit my brother today in his new pad in the country and I find myself in a total state of house envy.

Little cottage in the middle of nowhere, no neighbours, pretty garden, wood burner and a little blue fence round the outside. Dinky little rooms with cute stairs and roses round the front door. It's gorgeous.

What's your ideal house?

We've been looking at some Highland estates this afternoon. Some amazing land and houses there for next to nothing... relatively speaking of cause.

My ideal house is round the corner. it's an old Victorian 6 bedroom semi with high ceilings and a small garden. I hate gardening

little house on the praire

When I was a kid I'd dream of a little cottage with roses up it.

Jays house is set in 2acres of garden with an orchard and paddock, 120 yard drive down to it from the road, nearest neighbour is 1/4 of a mile away, lovely to visit but I wouldn't want to live there

My ideal house is my parents in law's house....

5 bedrooms, each has its own bathroom and shower. 2 bars (one for the main floor, and one for the basement), a pool room, a sauna, a media room downstairs next to the bar, a nice yard, a hot tub outside (perfect for when it is snowing in the mountains). And a three car garage.

God, I miss how much bigger houses are in the US.

Mine is two houses…..

I love the warehouse style loft apartments in the city, high ceilings, exposed brisk and mainly as one room. Great for living it up at the weekend.

I also love house on the hillside, so the backs have a perfect view over the countryside. It wouldn't matter how big or small the rooms were, as long as it had the view and decent sized back to put a terrace to sit out in the evening or daytime, and be private.

I can't drive so the middle of nowhere wouldn't work for me. If you transport that house and rebuild it (with larger rooms) near to a town with good rail and bus links I'd grab it.

Whatever it is, it would have to feel like home, shared with someone I love.

I aspire to that.

Is like a biggish 4 bedroom house in the country on a big bit of land so I can design it myself.

Has to have floor to ceiling windows in my bedroom and the living room.

Ensuite bathrooms plus, a nice big main bathroom with a big white Victorian roll too bath. Walk in shower.

A porch/decking wrapped around the house. Hot tub in the garden.

Wouldn't mind a little farmhouse somewhere, possibly further west than I am now. I often buy sheep from a guy in Dartmoor - seems nice out there.

...Up on the Downs

Limestone, open fire and well drained land will do me fine.

Titz Towers, North Notts

Old, with ivy on the walls, mullioned windows. A round tower at one end with a glassed over roof. A library with a small cast iron spiral staircase up to a den. A secret passage from my study to the garage. A parlour with a big open fireplace and in the hallway, a booth with the telephone in. A central staircase leading up to a walkway, with a grandfather clock in an alcove. I rather think I'll have to save my pennies and get my friend to build this for me.
