This really annoys me. I think it is worse in the UK too...there should be signs, and I have been in situations where there weren't.
Took me a long time to get used to transaction fees here too. In the US it is illegal for a company to charge you extra for using a credit or debit card.

went to a lunchtime cafe on holiday bill came to about £15 went to pay and the guy said he would have to round it up to £20 as they didn't take cards under £20.
When I politely asked where this was displayed he changed his tune but mubbled something like a lot of places do it.

That sounds like he was trying it on instead of it being standard practice 
I went to a place in Switzerland that added on a service charge per person. It wasn't advertised until I received the bill. Cheeky. |

We've got a big sign up where I work saying no card transactions under £5. No one reads it. M
We've also got a bright red sign that's 3 foot long and about a foot high stuck to the front of the hot counter saying 'caution, hot' people don't read that either! |
