I'm sure we in the 'developed' UK do things they find repugnant as well...

But India's record on women's right/safety is truly shocking.

Tip of an iceberg...

Take a look at the diamond on your finger and imagine how many African children were raped or had their hands cut off, all because you needed the right ring.

Accept your own hypocrisy, you will never change the world.

I've seen a lot of bad things in a lot of powerful cities, nothing can be done, because at heart, nobody cares about poor brown, developing world children.

Nail on t'head. The caste system is strongly based on honour. The family will see the rape of the girls as regaining the honour they lost. Truly appalling.

The UK sends huge amounts of money in aid to support African children. I don't know how we can be accused of not caring when it's clearly evident that we do.

Also, why are children raped as a result of a UK person buying a ring? I'm pretty sure Africans own precious jewels too. The purchase of the stones is not causation.

This is how people lose their rights and get given contradictory messages.

Rape is ok so long as the law says so, same for murder and war, same for tax theft, same for a lot of things. Everywhere is fucked up really, because people are selfish and believe they have a self worth that differs from others.

In theory, they would. Prosecution wouldn't likely go ahead due to lack of willingness.

It is not a legal order. The higher caste has demanded the rape of the women, those who formed the council are unelected. It's pretty much the equivalent of doing something because the bigger boys in the playground said so.

The women have applied to the Supreme Court for protection who have asked the council to explain themselves.

It might be illegal but for law to count it has to be upheld.

One of the men who took part in the gang rape of that poor woman on a bus in India said she only died because she resisted her rapists so it was her own fault. With attitudes like that legality isn't a consideration.

I'm not disagreeing that rape is under reported and under prosecuted, it's just wrong to say it's within the law to rape people in India.

When laws are not upheld, and people can break them without consequences, then those laws are saying something else. They say yeah you shouldn't do this but you can. So rape is, in practice, legal and the law supports that.

It's a cultural problem, not really a legal one. India has revised its rape laws quite recently and they're in line with most Western countries.

Sadly, northern India is still quite "tribal" and lower castes believe they have less rights. Apparently, India states 2 in 100,000 are raped. It's clearly not being reported. You can't prosecute when there's no statements being made.

They're starting to implement outreach programmes where police are educating those areas most affected, but they're up against centuries of the caste system.

It's really not legal or supported.

You can't prosecute someone when no one has accused them of a crime, and no one is willing to testify against them.

Tbh, the only thing wrong with their rape law is the marital rape (husbands can't rape wives). They have prosecuted against this by using domestic violence laws instead, but it's backwards.

Then again it was only changed in '91 here in UK.

You think that money gets there?

We need oil to support our civilisation, so a certain amount of killing in its name is acceptable.

But apart from industrial use, nobody needs to wear shiny pebbles...

Demand from the west causes a surge from the rest to provide.

If that means killing and raping, so be it!

Most shut their eyes and ignore that they support the very people they hate...

Crime, corruption and international trade are inextricably linked, you can choose not to see it & you can fuel the horror.

But don't pretend to give a shit about some raped Indian children as you type away at a computer whose components were build in a factory owned by the rapists families.

I'm an anarchist. I uphold laws without being forced to, just like most people who are scared of anarchy. Go figure."

I always say I'm an anarchist too, but I play by societies rules....
