I donate quite a lot, and usually put the change into their charity box when I buy.

No. It just seems wrong. I would pay more for things if the money goes to charity. If I feel it is too expensive, then I just don't buy it.

No. Wouldn't have the heart to.

And it's a charity shop - (unless it's Oxfam) it's cheap enough as it is...

Sometimes it does not have a price on it .... if its a more expensive item, like furniture, for sure. Kitted my whole house out on charity store furniture a few years back when we were relocated after being made homeless .. without any furniture. How else could the kids get their heads down?

I wouldn't personally, ... items priced in charity shops are usually very reasonable anyway...

I once bought a designer handbag for £10, which I am sure was a mistake...i.e. they could have charged more for it...but their loss that they didn't and I got a bargain

I got a tea set once and discovered it's a sought item on E bay. I got the whole set for the price of a cup on e bay. My happy mistake though. I still have it.

"Thanks Courtney. Why does it seem wrong ?"

It seems wrong because the money is going to charity. So, I would feel like I am taking money out of a charity box (even though I understand that is not the case, directly).

However, I have seen obviously very poor people haggle in charity shops, and I think that it fine - the charity exists to help people and so people who need help should get it.

I would probably just pay for something if a really poor person wanted it but couldn't afford it in a charity shop anyway, though.

But if they could have gotten £4, then I effectively cheated them out of £1....plus they have overhead costs so its not 100% profit

I hear you. The charity shops get the stuff free so it's okay to get it for as little as possible.

But doesn't that mean that the children, families, sick and dying get LESS because someone wanted something for nothing ?

Charities don't always send all of their money to the people they are supposed to be helping. Do look in the 'money off' and just going out of date bins in the supermarkets and the sale rack in the charity shops.

Charity shops and eBay are my hobby, I thrive on getting a bargain. Apart from the rare occasion of needing something special e dry item of clothing I have (apart from my leggings/jeggings) are secondhand.

I'm pretty savy and only buy good makes of clothing, I refuse to pay for secondhand primarily clothing.

I never go in needing anything just pick up what I see.

Some things are overpriced, I just leave them.

When I was going on holiday I wanted some black crop trousers, and a little black Cardigan, walked into the charity shop here( one of them) and fuck me there was a vyella black crop trousers, a per una black Cardigan and a pretty sun top to match all in my size. £12 the lot.

Last week I got a fatface jumper £3.99 we have a fatface here, none would know that's not where it came from.

The other day I wanted a thin belt to hold my denim skirt up, first charity shop walked in there was one.

In the bigger towns the furniture shops are great although I've never bought furniture.

But if I was in the unfortunate position where I didn't have funds I'd use free cycle mostly, some good bits on there,

I work for a charity, one that doesn't have any shops or rely on high street collectors. Our budget has just been slashed by the local government and we're all being made redundant.

Being as I know how tight charities have to balance their books and rely on outside funding to make them able to carry out their job I wouldn't haggle in a charity shop.

Mainly because I have had a lot of customers try haggling, and then bring out more than enough money, the money is going to a cause more than anything, not like most shops where it goes into some rich persons pocket. Also, people don't haggle in primark, why is it OK to haggle in a charity shop? Sorry to sound angry, it's just one of those things that really riles me

No, I wouldn't. If I buy anything from a charity shop, I consider it me donating to that charity.

My son used to volunteer in a charity shop. Some customers he told me would change price tickets to get the item cheaper, or even shoplift the items. Never occurred to me that people would steep so low!

That's true I suppose but someone else will probably come along and be happy to pay the full price.

I do enjoy visiting charity shops and have bought some really good stuff in them.

Saw one selling tables from ikea for £20 when the same table is £10 brand new from ikea.

Last one I went in I saw a fendi handbag, Shame it was a fake they cost a fortune!

No I wouldn't personally but I have seen people do it. I think that charities now are big business (that isn't necessarily wrong) and if you feel its ok to haggle in say Currys it's ok to haggle in Oxfam. I don't understand why it's not ok to haggle in Tesco though.

We donated a huge amount of stuff last week and I bought a dress at the same time, the man behind the counter gave me a discount because of the stuff we'd brought in, so they do have discretion. We were in the same shop this week and Mr N showed a top saying "this is your style" .....it was, I'd donated it the week before

"No I wouldn't personally but I have seen people do it.

We were in the same shop this week and Mr N showed a top saying "this is your style" .....it was, I'd donated it the week before "

I like that approach. I'd happily give discount to people making donations because it's incentive to recycle.

how about tipping this the other way around - if say you saw a handbag you knew was about 100 quid and they had it for sale for a fiver - would you offer more? personally id like to think i would if i had spare cash which i rarely do hence a bargain shopper always out of necessity here

No I wouldn't because I don't think any handbag is worth £100 in the first place.

"Would you haggle in a charity shop ?"

Absolutely not. Because it's for charity.

Yes. And if they can't ring through the extra, I put it in the donation box

No. I wouldn't haggle in any shop, charity shop or otherwise ! I feel it's wrong to do that. If it's to expensive for me then I don't buy it

"Would you haggle in a charity shop ?"

good question..... probably not..

I am not really in a charity shop looking for a bargin, if I am happy with what i am buying and i know the money is going to a good cause... that is fine

in other shops i have been know to haggle though

I wouldn't haggle in any shop or market. I wouldn't know if a bag was worth £100 and in my area a designer bag is probably a fake.

No I've seen plenty do though and it irks me it's for charity after all. Pay the price or go buy it new.

Just spent the afternoon bagging up loads of nice toys for the charity
