Driving standards on roads, getting better or worse?

Standards are lower.
Simple solution is to have frequent testing, where subsequent tests have much higher standards for passing than initial test. Every 5 years or so. Make driving be viewed as a privilege.
With increasing volumes of international tourists etc, it would be too easy for our standards to drop to their low average level. |

I agree standards have dropped so much, so quickly. I remember cars giving cyclists room when they passed you. Cars didn't pull out in front of you, then acting like you are in the wrong. Drivers used to know how to drive on roundabouts, instead of choosing any lane they feel like. Red lights used to mean stop, now they are just something to be ignored. Motorbikes used to be seen, now they are treated with contempt. |

I don't see that as a solution S.S.
Testing doesn't guarantee that rules, manners , codes are observed on the roads. |

Driving is a privilege, or so I keep being told by the police.
With increasing volumes of international tourists etc, it would be too easy for our standards to drop to their low average level."
Stricter punishment for people breaking the rules not just fines and bans, crush the car the driver will think twice when they have to keep buying a new car after every time they get caught. |

In 1935 when the driving test was introduced as an answer to the huge number of deaths by RTA - there were significantly less than a tenth of the cars on the roads that there are now - but there were 3 times as many deaths by RTA across Britain than there are now!
The British driving test is very tough compared to most other countries!
If we want to reduce RTA's still further then I'd suggest that people who move to Britain should have to take our driving test - simples!  |

Could the drop in fatalities be linked to the amount of safety features new cars have, like air bags, crumple zones, seat belts being mandatory, these have all been added in the last 10 years or so. |

Most people who move here do have to take your driving test. It's only commonwealth countries that don't. Marc and I moved from the US and had to retake both the theory and practical exams - even though Marc has been driving manual for 14 years.

The best way to improve driving standards is fir tougher punishments to remove this belief that driving is a right not a privilege. You only need to look at the arrogant indignation on threads about being caught speeding to see how dismissive many people are towards the laws of the road |

Most people who move here do have to take your driving test. It's only commonwealth countries that don't. Marc and I moved from the US and had to retake both the theory and practical exams - even though Marc has been driving manual for 14 years.

I think much higher passing standards are needed, but could only be part of a solution. Perhaps all drivers would have to face monitoring in car for a specific periods too, especially prior to testing, and after bad driving.
I'd love much stricter road enforcement of high road standards. But, as we're cutting police numbers etc, I'm guessing that it won't be happening. Speed limit enforcement gets a tiny minority of what's wrong.
Just the appropriate use of road lanes, something so simple, should not be broken so frequently. I fail to see how people can be such bad drivers and not know it.
I realise if you ask most people to rate their driving, most will say it's above average - which is impossible.
When computer driven cars come along in mass numbers, it will signal a change. Poor computers having to cope with the crap drivers around them though. |

A relative of mine passed her test in West Africa in the 1960's. She had to start the car, drive it along a track and reverse. She was then qualified to drive in this country. |

Try living in tourist town! They're a nightmare, some can barely drive at 30mph because there might be a bend in the road ahead or something to stare at others forget which country they're in and drive on the wrong side of the road! My personal favourites are the ones that are too impatient and overtake unsafely and come at me head on! Then there's the parked ones, don't give a shit if they're sticking out in the road and getting in everyone's way.

maybe if we had someone to enforce the laws rather than relying on cameras .more traffic officers on unmarked card patrolling not just the motorways might make a differance

There's more people on the roads so it probably appears worse than it is. Generally people make a human error then a mile down the road scream obscenities at another driver who does the same.
Relax. Don't drive at the person who pulled out late...relax...ease off behind the person driving slow ...relax...pull over and let the tail gater pass by. |

There is talk of every car having a black box fitted to the car, it records everything you do. Then come you MOT time, it is downloaded and the information is looked at. If you have been naughty you will be given by post your points and fines, maybe even a disqualification. |
