"Anybody got one? Anybody knowledgeable about them? I'm tempted to get one just for the fun of it.

Got a couple a work.
Very useful for making lots of little brackets and parts on, so we an install various prototype parts into the cars to trial them. And for replacing those bits we break whilst trying to take parts off the car as well.
No idea anything about what make:model we have here I just ask others and a few hours later bits appear as if by magic for me |

Then I'd use both of them to print two more printers ,,,,,, then I'd use my four printers to print eight printers and I'd keep repeating that process until I got really bored..... |

"It takes like 11 hours to print a tiny spider-man figure.
I had imagined I could print full size sex robots at 30 per minute. I will wait until the technology matures."
What printer did you have? And yes, I'm sure its got a way to go before it can actually live up to the hype. |

I have the Printrbot Simple, nice little kit that I put together myself. done some upgrades on it and printed out a bunch of useful things for the house, brackets for windows, those bumper bits for the window catch, key rings, bottle openers, camera lens mounts etc
Lots of fun, I just wish it had a bigger print bed to print larger objects. |

In the US someone was able to make a gun from a 3D printer that didn't require any extra parts - so it was made completely of plastic. You can then get through metal detectors with it.

Just wondering about the tensile strength of these printed products ....
Are they sound enough to replace traditional materials ?
I'm not looking to recreate the Forth Rail Bridge though |

The majority of printers just print plastic although really good ones can print metal. As Soxy quipped earlier, there are printers that can even print themselves i.e. have children. So multiple materials. |

The RAF have printed parts for one of their fast jets, although I'm guessing they might have used something a little better than your few hundred quid 3D printer from Maplins |

There are lots of things being manufactured using the additive machining process. There are bits in aircraft engines, it's quite neat technology. Not quite the same as your home 3d printer though. No idea what I'd print.... |

That's what I say every thing someone asks me what would you use it for.
Yet everytime I break that silly little plastic bloody clip taking something to bits I think if only I had a cheap 3D printer I could make a new one of them to clip back into place |
