Anyone on the inside of TFL care to shed light on the strikes? As an outsider it does seem stupid that people on them wages and perks need to strike. However, the're always two sides to the story? |

If I signed a contract that stated I work one week of nights a year then my boss tore it up without discussing it and said now you'll work fourteen weeks, I think I'd be upset too. It's never been about pay as I understand it.
People don't look at the bigger picture, when they do, it's too late.

this..
have been under the threat of an imposed new contract, old conditions of service thrown out etc and no mention of consultation we went on strike to protect what we had..
not for more pay or anything else, one days action was enough for the threat to be removed.. |

"I am sure a Nurse, Fireman, or Police officer would love to be on 50k a year considering the crap they have to deal with and the risks to themselves everyday."
Then they should have had better unions. |

In the case of the Police they don't have a union and they can't strike either as it is illegal for them to strike"
Then they have to accept that their pay will be lower because they're funded by taxes.
When the police can sell tickets, I'm sure they'll put wages up. |

At what point does genuine collective bargaining become greed?
Not specific to Tube drivers just think there's an upper limit to pay and sensible conditions. |

"so do you think its fair that they cant have a union or be able to strike unlike the other emergency services"
For what it's worth, police are a member of unison. |

I don't think they are, they only have a police federation and there definitely not a union |

But anyway we are moving away from the original thread about the tube drivers. My sympathy as gone completely with them, they are considerably overpaid for there job and the amount of leave they also get is ridiculous. A bus driver has a far more difficult job for less than half that wage. Tube drivers just greedy |

And they knew that when they became policemen. Would they try to change a policeman's contract and hours without consultation? |

So would most teachers, and support staff in schools. Support staff don't have a hope in hell of earning money like this if they remain as a teaching assistant. |

"Considering the state of the jobs market you think folk would be happy just to have one.........
Just saying"
So the workforce bends over and takes it just because there is a queue if unemployed people waiting to take their job? That's not a very defensive strategy to keep your terns and conditions favourable. That's the start if the descent into a Victorian labour market. |

If someone can get a better wage than me then good luck.
If someone wants to complain about their conditions in order to get better ones good luck.
Me moaning about their lot, will not improve my lot,so why do it other than to make yourself bitter and twisted? If I think I'm hard done by I can go and apply for the "really easy job" they do? |

So, don't become a policeman if you can't join an effective union then. You want to be a government pawn, then that's the price you pay. |

If public sector companies/service providers wish to change their terms of employment......one way or another they will eventually. No matter what unions/strikes do.
All the strikes etc do is delay the inevitable. |

Playing Devils advocate....they run within budgets. Blow the budget and then the service collapses. We all want better conditions and pay but we need to be realistic.
Personally I believe public services who care for our society and develop it (nurses, teachers etc) should be recognised.
On a slightly off thread note...to suggest the government oppresses people and to challenge them is one thing, but to then advocate it's ok for one sector to receive that treatment is ok,suggests prejudice not a fight for equality. |

I didn't say it was okay (I presume you mean the police comment). But that was made clear to them when they enlisted. I think the police should be allowed a union and to strike.
Budgets can be changed, and this isn't about money anyway. They have already made savings in other areas due to demanning. |
