Hi bi-bunny
I used to keep fish, the initial set up costs are a little high but once you're up and running the costs are quite low
It's best to go to a reputable aquarium stockist, they will walk you through the whole process

Get a second hand tank and be sure to set it up properly with good filters. You can start with the smaller cheaper fish and buy the more expensive ones as you go along. Have a good read up and ask at your nearest tropical fish centre for advice. Some fish can be aggressive and eat the others. |

I kept them for years and it was really cheap. Food is generally just a sprinkle of flakes.
The expensive set up was the tank, heater, filtration system and aeration, but you can buy kita.
Heating the tank was quite cheap, as they're not mega high temperature.
Key thing is to take things slowly. The water must be conditioned and fish added progressively, so that the water isn't unbalanced with nitrogen wastes.
Obviously all fish must be suited to the others.
The cheaper way is to get second hand tanks etc.
Visit some fish suppliers to get an idea about fish prices.
It's interesting and there are some gorgeous fish to keep. Aim for easy fish to start.

It can be as expensive as you want to make it.
I bought a juwel tank for 650 but included everything, heater, filter, lights, sand and an ornament or two.
Like has been said you need to get the levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate correct before adding fish. (Known as cycling) also you have to condition the water by using tap safe to remove the chlorine.
I did this by putting some food in to Kick off the cycle, then added a couple of hardy fish after the levels got stable.
A master tester kit will cost around £30 and is great to have.
Also a small tank you can use as a quarantine tank is a good idea.
Google will give you in depth guides on everything you need.

I bought the jewel fish tank on ebay for 40.00 and everything with it including the fish
the tank is great to use and feed just wash out the filters from time to time
I never bothered using the tap safe or the master kit and my fish survived long enough
did have siamese fighting fish and an angel fish with plenty of guppy fish and another small fish
I liked movement in my tank so kinda had small shoaling of fish looked great in the tank also used the fish tank as a low light/warm glow light
the last light i put into it was an led that changed to different colours |
