"What's your view on religion? For? Against? What religion are you?

I myself am an Odinist "

When it comes to bullshit, big-time, major league bullshit, you have to stand in awe of the all-time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims, religion. No contest. No contest. Religion. Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, you talk about a good bullshit story. Holy Shit!

But I want you to know something, this is sincere, I want you to know, when it comes to believing in God, I really tried. I really, really tried. I tried to believe that there is a God, who created each of us in His own image and likeness, loves us very much, and keeps a close eye on things. I really tried to believe that, but I gotta tell you, the longer you live, the more you look around, the more you realize, something is fucked up.

Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed. Results like these do not belong on the résumé of a Supreme Being. This is the kind of shit you'd expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. And just between you and me, in any decently-run universe, this guy would've been out on his all-powerful ass a long time ago. And by the way, I say "this guy", because I firmly believe, looking at these results, that if there is a God, it has to be a man.

No woman could or would ever fuck things up like this. So, if there is a God, I think most reasonable people might agree that he's at least incompetent, and maybe, just maybe, doesn't give a shit. Doesn't give a shit, which I admire in a person, and which would explain a lot of these bad results.

So rather than be just another mindless religious robot, mindlessly and aimlessly and blindly believing that all of this is in the hands of some spooky incompetent father figure who doesn't give a shit, I decided to look around for something else to worship. Something I could really count on.

And immediately, I thought of the sun. Happened like that. Overnight I became a sun-worshipper. Well, not overnight, you can't see the sun at night. But first thing the next morning, I became a sun-worshipper. Several reasons. First of all, I can see the sun, okay? Unlike some other gods I could mention, I can actually see the sun. I'm big on that. If I can see something, I don't know, it kind of helps the credibility along, you know? So everyday I can see the sun, as it gives me everything I need; heat, light, food, flowers in the park, reflections on the lake, an occasional skin cancer, but hey. At least there are no crucifixions, and we're not setting people on fire simply because they don't agree with us.

Sun worship is fairly simple. There's no mystery, no miracles, no pageantry, no one asks for money, there are no songs to learn, and we don't have a special building where we all gather once a week to compare clothing. And the best thing about the sun, it never tells me I'm unworthy. Doesn't tell me I'm a bad person who needs to be saved. Hasn't said an unkind word. Treats me fine. So, I worship the sun. But, I don't pray to the sun. Know why? I wouldn't presume on our friendship. It's not polite.

I've often thought people treat God rather rudely, don't you? Asking trillions and trillions of prayers every day. Asking and pleading and begging for favors. Do this, gimme that, I need a new car, I want a better job. And most of this praying takes place on Sunday His day off. It's not nice. And it's no way to treat a friend.

But people do pray, and they pray for a lot of different things, you know, your sister needs an operation on her crotch, your brother was arrested for defecating in a mall. But most of all, you'd really like to fuck that hot little redhead down at the convenience store. You know, the one with the eyepatch and the clubfoot? Can you pray for that? I think you'd have to. And I say, fine. Pray for anything you want. Pray for anything, but what about the Divine Plan?

Remember that? The Divine Plan. Long time ago, God made a Divine Plan. Gave it a lot of thought, decided it was a good plan, put it into practice. And for billions and billions of years, the Divine Plan has been doing just fine. Now, you come along, and pray for something. Well suppose the thing you want isn't in God's Divine Plan? What do you want Him to do? Change His plan? Just for you? Doesn't it seem a little arrogant? It's a Divine Plan. What's the use of being God if every run-down shmuck with a two-dollar prayerbook can come along and fuck up Your Plan?

And here's something else, another problem you might have: Suppose your prayers aren't answered. What do you say? "Well, it's God's will." "Thy Will Be Done." Fine, but if it's God's will, and He's going to do what He wants to anyway, why the fuck bother praying in the first place? Seems like a big waste of time to me! Couldn't you just skip the praying part and go right to His Will? It's all very confusing.

So to get around a lot of this, I decided to worship the sun. But, as I said, I don't pray to the sun. You know who I pray to? Joe Pesci. Two reasons: First of all, I think he's a good actor, okay? To me, that counts. Second, he looks like a guy who can get things done. Joe Pesci doesn't fuck around. In fact, Joe Pesci came through on a couple of things that God was having trouble with.

For years I asked God to do something about my noisy neighbor with the barking dog, Joe Pesci straightened that cocksucker out with one visit. It's amazing what you can accomplish with a simple baseball bat.

So I've been praying to Joe for about a year now. And I noticed something. I noticed that all the prayers I used to offer to God, and all the prayers I now offer to Joe Pesci, are being answered at about the same 50% rate. Half the time I get what I want, half the time I don't. Same as God, 50-50. Same as the four-leaf clover and the horseshoe, the wishing well and the rabbit's foot, same as the Mojo Man, same as the Voodoo Lady who tells you your fortune by squeezing the goat's testicles, it's all the same: 50-50. So just pick your superstition, sit back, make a wish, and enjoy yourself.

And for those of you who look to The Bible for moral lessons and literary qualities, I might suggest a couple of other stories for you. You might want to look at the Three Little Pigs, that's a good one. Has a nice happy ending, I'm sure you'll like that. Then there's Little Red Riding Hood, although it does have that X-rated part where the Big Bad Wolf actually eats the grandmother. Which I didn't care for, by the way. And finally, I've always drawn a great deal of moral comfort from Humpty Dumpty. The part I like the best? "All the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put Humpty Dumpty back together again." That's because there is no Humpty Dumpty, and there is no God. None, not one, no God, never was.

In fact, I'm gonna put it this way. If there is a God, may he strike this audience dead! See? Nothing happened. Nothing happened? Everybody's okay? All right, tell you what, I'll raise the stakes a little bit. If there is a God, may he strike me dead. See? Nothing happened, oh, wait, I've got a little cramp in my leg. And my balls hurt. Plus, I'm blind. I'm blind, oh, now I'm okay again, must have been Joe Pesci, huh? God Bless Joe Pesci. Thank you all very much. Joe Bless You!

What's hilarious is that anti-religious brigade are every bit as zealous and bigoted as the religious brigade they criticise.

The only balanced depiction of the matter I've ever seen is season 7, episode 12 of South Park; "all about Mormons"

Hello Darklord,

"Atheism has become a religion, in a way..."

In no way can atheism be considered a religion, it is the refusal to believe in God and all it's dogma. It's not a belief it's disbelief.

I am and always will be an atheist. I respect people who have belief in any religion though.

The basis of almost all religions is about instilling morals and values. Its the interpretation of those values and how to live them that sometimes goes wrong.

I've seen people find religion later in life and it turn the whole lives around. Including a close friend who had repeatedly attempted suicide now they are happier than ever.

The truth is that it's very hard to understand people's true motivations for something. Not least of all because people lie but people aren't always conscious of their reasons anyway.

For example people that go and fight for ISIS claim to be motivated by 'religion'. What's less reported are the excellent salaries they get for doing so, by regional standards anyway.

~$1,000 a month in a shit hole like Syria, ummm yes please, not exactly a lot of other jobs going at the local supermarket at the moment. What's that - do I believe in the caliphate? Errr sure, why not...

Completely agree with the zealous & bigoted part on both sides with some people.Ricky Gervais is always trying to ram his atheism down people's throats."

In the interests of balance Atheists have a bit of catching up to do when it comes to ramming things down are throats, I, along with most had and education that has, unwittingly on my part, left me with a knowledge of the Bible and easily remembered hymns and prayers.

Can't say the same for Gervais's opinions

"What's your view on religion? For? Against? What religion are you?

I myself am an Odinist

So what you saying?"

I maybe be wrong but I think the poster is saying that they don't believe in religion. I could be wrong though.

Religions divide people into conflicting groups, and have done nothing to solve the problems of the human race in thousands of years, all religions have failed. The Truth is what is, we don't need anyone to tell us what truth is, it is there for us to discover for ourselves, otherwise we only receive somebody else's version of the truth, and they can use that to manipulate us. Use your own minds, see truth for yourselves.

Totally disagree

Atheist don't recruit, get together on a Sunday, knock on doors or stand in town acosting people,

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and if religion it's ok, if a non believer shares his opinion the religious crew claim hard done to,

Quite anti religious here, it provides nothing other than bringing good people together,

As mentioned in the George Carlin quite above its all about money and control,

QUESTION EVERYTHING

Are you sure about that?

Yes. If you read that rant at the start it says "there is no God. None, not one, no God, never was." That's an absolute statement, no room for debate. Anyone who disagrees is wrong.

Even the Catholic Church no longer talks in such terms. They believe there is a God but it's a matter of "faith" (i.e there is possibility there is no God). Being open to said possibility doesn't make you stupid or wrong, in fact its worth exploring, hence the term 'doubting Thomas'

And to top it off my 6 year old needed a shit and told the whole congregation....as well as bellowing. " MUM CAN YOU COME AND WIPE MY BUM!"

Ha ha, human nature and the structure of our societies are that some people seek power. If it suits them they will use religion to justify why they should be given power, if politics or some other cause works as a better argument then they'll use that instead.

Has you state 'history'

The world has moved on. Islam is still stuck in the Middle Ages .

I think religion is great for comfort in life but the minute it becomes a way of life and forced on others then it should be banned.

Some religious zealots don't belittle others choices, they behead them!

Atheists tend not to.

Historically speaking, zealous atheists have preferred firing squads and concentration camps to beheading. "

Did they do it in the name of atheism? Or was the fact that I hey were atheists, just a side issue. An atheist can never use the defence of "God told me to do it", like George Dubya did.

Yes it's a side issue, that's the whole point!

Do you seriously believe people are running around the middle east beheading people because of "religion" rather than the ~$1,000 a month they are getting paid to do it?

Those ISIS tossers are no more motivated by real Islam than ol' Joe's firing squads were motivated by atheism or anti-semitism. I doubt the average Nazi party member really gave a crap about anti-semitism either but you gotta pay the mortgage and nobody else was hiring at the time.

You really can't take extremists at their word when they describe their motivations.

I don't have any beliefs either way, there's no evidence for any of them, therefore I'm just me.

If Jesus makes his second coming I'll rethink my beliefs but until then I go off the probability that it's bollocks and if somebody makes a ridiculous religious statement then I'll feel the need to ridicule it.

I don't confuse spirituality with organised religion, ones an intrinsical item of human nature and the others just a fucking idiot on a power trip

I think you might have underestimated the power of religious fervour. Granted, their are political reasons for what's happening, but the easiest way to gather a fanatical army over there is to brainwash the already ill educated and susceptible. The heads of ISIS might not even believe that what they are doing is in gods name, but its a sure fire way of getting others to do their bidding.

Believe in what you want. I don't want to have to listen to it, or abide by its "rules". Religion and state are always best kept apart. Once one had influence in the other, that's when your real trouble starts.

I recommend reading "Greed and Grievance in Civil Wars" by Oxford professor Paul Collier. It's an objective, scientific study into the relationship between civil war and whether economic factors (greed) or grievances (e.g. religion) are the significant factor.

Spoiler alert: it's money all the way.

When a totalitarian regime is toppled, religion always sucks up some of the void left behind. The incoming government is always happy to see the churched resurgence. I wonder why?

I am a devout atheist but like many things in life everyone has there own view.

For me as an outsider i feel that religion is used by to many people normally to justify things we would all normally find disturbing and deranged, you just have to look back at any war or attempt at genocide.

While faith on the other hand is something people use to help them and others which is a totally different concept.

And not one of those actions was done in the name of atheism. The fact they were atheists was a byproduct of their communist beliefs. Hitler wasn't an atheist by the way. He wasn't vegetarian either.

"I'm an atheist but I don't belittle others choices even of I'm confused by them and I can't stand richard Dawkins lol

Some religious zealots don't belittle others choices, they behead them!

Atheists tend not to.

Pol pot shot them and belittled bhudism

Stalin starved them and burned the churches

Hitler gassed them and blew up the synagogues

Atheists aren't necessarily saints!"

.

You won't find one flying a plane into buildings very much though... You know why?

This life's all I've got.

But religious people.. Oh they've got a much better life to get off to!

Ps Hitler wasn't an atheist, Stalin and pot were, but then they were also mentally deranged!

No there people a physiatrist would consider sane in every other way!

If you genuinely believe in an after life, your much more capable of craziness, you don't have to worry about death, you see for me, that's the biggest worry, my favourite saying is, it could be worse I could be dead... That's the worse there is, but to a crazy person, I mean a religious person, there's loads of things worse than death!

And all those things cab be solved through prayer... But unfortunately they usually use AK47s instead!

I'm neither atheist or religious, but I'm definitely in the "I don't give a shit either way" club.

The "god" paradoxes intrigue me though, with never a logical answer given by any person who follows a religion.

The first being - could an omnipotent (all powerful) being create a stone so heavy that even he could not lift it?" If he could lift the rock, then it seems that the being would not have been omnipotent to begin with in that he would have been incapable of creating a heavy enough stone; if he could not lift the stone, then it seems that the being either would never have been omnipotent to begin with or would have ceased to be omnipotent upon his creation of the stone.

The second is the Epicurus paradox - Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then He is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is He neither able nor willing? Then why worship him?

("he" may be substituted for "she" depending on your preference)

Right so when someone claiming to be a communist murders someone they are mentally ill and it's nothing to do with ideology.

When someone claiming to be a religious murders someone, we take it at face value.

Because it's self evident there's only one ideology that could ever be invoked when justifying murder, before we look at the person and say "nah that aint it, he just ain't right in the head"

Doesn't sound very scientific...

There's a difference

I've had three ideologies in my life!

I believed in each one alot, I'm currently of the green ideology, I believe in it alot, it's got lots of science to it and lots of facts but I wouldn't kill myself for it! i may kill others for it and that makes me a bad man but I wouldn't kill myself for it because it doesnt make me a mad man, so maybe your right Stalin was a very bad man but not a mad man, whereas religious people are quite willing to blow themselves up to kill others and I don't think that happens on the same scale if ever with atheists

Please read the study the Collier study I referenced, you're a smart person letting their personal prejudice get in the way of the evidence. Or if you must persist please present some actual scientific evidence to these claims (e.g. some psychology journal articles or something)

Seems I missed the part where it was now established that no religious texts has ever written guidence for its followers that request they either stone so called wrong doers or kill entire tribes that the writer did not like at the time ?

Rather than the collier report there are decades of fascinating research upon the very real psychological activity called indoctrination xx

Show me any text a person must adhere to to rightly be an atheist ?

Religious people by very definition are at least trying to subscribe to a specific doctrine of life , the fact rational interpretation of many of these texts is nigh on impossible due to vast contradictions and ambiguity is a fair stab at the real reason religions can be so dangerous and have an almost infinite number of differing they points all convinced beyond doubt they are absolutely right with their interpretation xx

1) doctrine are not exclusive to religions

2) when people get indoctrinated we tend to refer to the organisations they join as cults. There's a vast amount of evidence that feeble-minded / border line mentally ill people join cults, not your average John and Jill off the street

3) again, the evidence shows that cult leaders tend to be highly insincere with their beliefs, often living double lives.

So join the dots and see that people who crave power will invent whatever excuse they have to to get it. They can call it a religion or a political party but sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken.

Funny how the end result is always that they get rich out of it, but we're discounting that as their motivation...

Is this just individuals though, or entire nations? The original motivation for WW2 has been clouded by John Wayne and his ilk.

You need to go check your dictionary. Religion refers both to an organised religion and a phenomenon which can be entirely personal.

I would be a theist if I only believed in a god. I am religious because I worship, know, and serve God... that's an activity and a way of life which doesn't require membership to a club for someone to partake in it

God has no name... so no not Yahweh... you presume wrong.

Serving humanity? Wow that's a complex one. I mean firstly... am I arrogant enough to imagine that humanity wants or needs my servitude? And is serving humanity any different from serving either myself or God? And does "serving humanity" actually ever serve humanity or does it just fuck things up more? It certainly seems like George Bush thought he was serving humanity when he invaded Iraq.

If you're asking whether I feel an obligation to history... then yes I feel an obligation to be part of a voice of progress, innovation, and beauty... and part of that involves defending the beauty and validity of religion imo

So, if its just a form of control...

A) why don't the religions control everything instead of governments? Heck they've been around long enough

B) why didn't governments replace religions? It was presumably a struggle for control between the two so why didn't they seek to outlaw each other?

C) why aren't the religions plotting a bloody coup now that the secular states have separated religion from the state?

Because you used a capital "G" I assumed you meant the original Talmudic dude - I apologise for my presumption. On the matter of serving humanity - at least humanity has a voice, whereas serving a god is surely just your own interpretation of how best to serve that god. Many different people have many different interpretations of that point, and that's where conflict usually begins. Conflict usually escalates, and wealth is almost always attained because of the escalation. There's always a profit to be made by those of opposing opinions.

The mind actually boggles. State and religion have been so intertwined in so many places since the middle ages at least, it is only (historically) recently in certain places the two are starting to disentangle itself.

In Britain: in 1066 William of Normandy divided Britain up thus: He kept at third of the land for himself, gave a third to his barons and a third to the church.

The descendants of those barons still own one fifth (or thereabouts) of the land in the UK and the church isn't far off....

"God" is the name of a Being, "god" is the concept of a deity of some sort. At least that's how I roll

I'd argue that humanity doesn't have a voice... not a single one anyway.. and that's why it's difficult to know how to serve humanity.... whilst its easier to know how to serve history because that really just ends up being your own view of what you think the right thing to do is

Serving God has nothing to do with interpretation for me. It's more about handing myself over as an instrument to work through. If I intervened in that and tried to double guess what God wanted from me I'd probably fuck everything up. Instead, its about relinquishing control to a greater cause and just trusting in that working through you. That's why the notion of "serving humanity" is so weird as humanity doesn't really work through me... although perhaps it does via sex lol

Ok. So you're saying that its a form of control that's happy to share and give away its power and doesn't really actually want to control things like the bin collection, the street lights, or basically anything to do with our daily lives. Is that right?

"For me, religion is a form of control by the people in charge... If you look back through the years, number of times the bible has been amended when science uncovers the truth is frightening (for example earth was supposedly centre of the universe but Galileo proved differently). Just my view...

D) why doesn't the dictionary definition of "religion" mention this theory?

The mind actually boggles. State and religion have been so intertwined in so many places since the middle ages at least, it is only (historically) recently in certain places the two are starting to disentangle itself.

"Because you used a capital "G" I assumed you meant the original Talmudic dude - I apologise for my presumption.

That's why the notion of "serving humanity" is so weird as humanity doesn't really work through me... although perhaps it does via sex lol "

Fair points, although I'd counter that the voice of humanity is audible and pleads for food, water, shelter and peace.

"You wouldn't believe the tirades of utter hatred I receive when I mention my religion. Saying you're Muslim these days is like saying you eat baby sandwiches.

Hilariously, these people are convinced I'm a fanatical suicide bomber who's momentarily slipped off her burka and backpack to take nude photos for a sex site.....

"

You keep taking those pics

This was am argument I had with my ex when he said he hated all Muslims (ex army his reasoning for his anger his choice I'm not slating that) my argument back was its not the religion he hated it was the extremist. Can't put everyone in the same boat and sink them all.

I don't believe in any religion as such just myself. That I'll go through life trying to do the best I can for myself family and friends.

A and B) as mentioned above, royalty/governments have historically used religion to keep the masses in check. Scratched each others back through the years.

C) atheism is taking over imo

D) look into heliocentrism and geocentrism.

totally agree with that. This is a moral issue as far as I'm concerned. I see morality as a human project, not something we inherit from god or any sacred texts. So I'd see such things as my obvious moral duty to my own conscience, if not any greater purpose than that. Things like child slavery don't need a god to tell us they're wrong. We already know they're wrong. Yet still... we shop at places like Primark

"

You won't find one flying a plane into buildings very much though... You know why?

This life's all I've got.

But religious people.. Oh they've got a much better life to get off to!

Ps Hitler wasn't an atheist, Stalin and pot were, but then they were also mentally deranged!

Yeah they were mentally deranged but people that fly planes into buildings are otherwise nice people just having a bad day? .

Doesn't sound very scientific... .

Or if you must persist please present some actual scientific evidence to these claims (e.g. some psychology journal articles or something)"

.

No maybe I'm confusing you with my point of view, I don't think atheists or religious people are any less or more capable of horrible deeds, in fact religious people might be less inclined to horrible acts because they at least have a moral code to fall back on, let's forget about any intrinsic moral code for a minute.

I mean what stops me from killing someone and taking their possessions in reality I've no belief in a God or an eternal damnation, so if I'm 50 in reality I'm trading off a possible 30 years more of life for what I could just take!

But on the flip side that 30 years is all I've got, I've got no afterlife to look forward to, so it's a trade off between risk of being caught and imprisoned for my remaining 30 years and putting up with what I've already got!

So if I've got a reasonable life, it's never really worth the trade!

However if I lived in a mud hut in Afghanistan, had no real quality of life and lived mainly of eating rats, I could perhaps think this shit life is worth the risk!

Now if your religious, you've got that extra thing that no atheist has, you've got an afterlife, the pope and the Mafia don both believe there going somewhere better, what they've done here is immaterial because they both have a personal twist on their religious beliefs, the pope thinks he's been good and done gods work and so does the Mafia don.

The atheist however doesn't have that luxury, they will cling on to life like a one year old round your leg.

And that is why I believe that your way more likely to have a religious person kill themselves and others for their beliefs, than an atheist!

That's why all the big religions have suicide as a mortal sin, your promising them this grand fantastic afterlife, why not get there as soon as possible surely, why wait to drag it out over 80 years and go through the pain of old age when that eternal afterlife awaits you!

Having any extreme belief in something that has no ounce of credibility or proof or even rationality is in itself a very damaging condition, that's not to say I confuse a sense of spirituality with organised religion, the fact that anybody would want to get together and confirm there crazy dogma together is even more worrying!

I mean what's the point of praying for anything, you've already got your afterlife of luxury you greedy bastard's can't you just be happy with that!

I will take a look at the report just out of curiosity, but to be honest religion isn't something I think about very often as it really offers me nothing!

Sexy-bum. What's your take on Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism etc. These Faiths talk about a cycle of rebirth which our goal is to get out of. It's an afterlife of sorts... but not one that believers in these Faiths are looking forward to. They'd rather disappear into nothingness.

I hear what you're saying... and maybe it does have an influence. In a couple of near death experiences I've been able to resign myself to it rather than be afraid and that's only because of my religion. But I still think there's something more going on than just the promise of an afterlife. (also my resignation had nothing to do with an afterlife existing... I'm agnostic on that issue)

I think the major flaw of the Judeo-Christian tradition over all the other Faiths is that it doesn't connect its believers with God. In fact quite a lot of its believers believe that God is absent from existence... so they're effectively atheists really. I simply can't bring myself to believe that any of these jihadists have ever had a "god experience". I know you don't believe in such a thing being real... but it is still quite a particular psychological experience which scientists have tried replicating. It involves feeling a presence in the room with you. If you then try and connect with that presence you become overwhelmed wit a sense that it knows and loves you. That's the psychological experience, whether delusional or not, that's what it feels like. I can't believe that these jihadists have had that experience. Otherwise they couldn't act the way they do. So to me, I'd say that it is ignorance of love, whether through God if you believe in such a thing or just through social upbringing and family etc if you don't.

"Seems I missed the part where it was now established that no religious texts has ever written guidence for its followers that request they either stone so called wrong doers or kill entire tribes that the writer did not like at the time ?

Funny how the end result is always that they get rich out of it, but we're discounting that as their motivation..."

My whole point was it can and does get used by the people in your point number 3. You just dismissed my point that the uneducated are being used by these people. Sometimes those cult leaders do actually believe the nonsense they spout as well, though granted it is usually about the money. You only have to look at Ron Hubbard or Jimmy Swaggart to see that! Marx saw the power of religion, most politicians see it too. They just choose to gently work alongside it rather than ban it. They know peoples weakness for it and exploit it.

That's a very interesting question and I wasn't aware there was religions with no afterlife to be honest! It's always striked me that there all offering you something for something.

Now if somebody stated up an earth religion, where we hold the earth as a supreme creature, idolised it and cherished it, but for this we got nothing back in return, no afterlife (I suppose you could have an afterlife where your atoms are absorbed into the supreme creature but your unaware of it... We'll call it death), just a sense of well being for doing something intrinsically good!.

Now if you want to get that going I'm in, I'll even consider sitting around fires offering sacrifices of wine and yarns of earth presence!.... Hang on I'm already ahead of the game, I joined the green party 16 years ago

And Marx is a brilliant example of someone who created an ideology that people were happy and willing to kill for! But it wasn't a fudging religion was it!

That still doesn't negate the fact that religion can and is used as a method to kill. I never said ideologies were not to blame either.

Great then using your logic (not mine) politics can and is used as a method to kill.

Well I thought that was rather obvious.

Ever considered it might not be the religion / politics / magic book of whatever that are the problem. That it might just be the people behind it that are the problem? "

.

Exactly, no system is at fault perse but the people who run/work in the system are.

This is the exact reason why the first line of any constitution should read...

This constitution is to protects us from ourselves and to do this best x y and z apply.

Coincidentally Marx was the first economist to really put human frailties into the maths!

Money doesn't pick on the weak but people who want money will!

He was a critic of the capitalist system that allowed humans to exploit each other through money, however he was a capitalist!

Undoubtedly they are. That's the same argument as guns don't kill, people do.

That's why so many of them have gold teeth. If you hold a pistol sideways it's going to recoil and smack you in the face.

"I am a devout atheist but like many things in life everyone has there own view.

For me as an outsider i feel that religion is used by to many people normally to justify things we would all normally find disturbing and deranged, you just have to look back at any war or attempt at genocide.

While faith on the other hand is something people use to help them and others which is a totally different concept."

This for us too.

We have friends and acquaintances from many different backgrounds and belief systems. I consider myself fortunate to work for a truly multicultural team and live in a multicultural society.

There is nothing wrong with faith / religion per se and it can be very positive.

However, extremism and the fact that many religions and cultures still treat women as second class citizens, (Christianity included)is an issue.

I find if difficult to grasp why anyone would attempt to live 21st century life based on misogynistic medieval practices.

Funny thing about gods they all seem to be dead. Even John Lennon and George Best are dead, and this might come as a surprise to many but even Elvis is dead

So whoever your dead god was he is dead and has been for thousands of years SO GET OVER IT

As for Sun worship, you have a valid point but at the end of the day....... it goes dark

The only problem with this excuse is that the Faiths profess to be leading exemplars of morality... our lighthouse in the mist per se. If we recognise them for what they are... total moral fuck ups... then it kinda takes the steam out of their reason for existing somewhat... don't you think?

You killed an interesting thread with your ridiculous inconsequential defensive ramblings which were utterly tangential and irrelevent to it. Shame cos I had a good summary to put at the end of it... but it'll just have to stay in my head lol

Still.. it was really helpful for me so thanks to everyone who played a part

"Nobody ever killed for Karl Marx's ideology, Lenin was never really a marxist and Stalin certainly wasn't.

Hence why people refer to their ideology as Leninism,Trotskyism, maoisim, stalinism...

"

Its mostly because the bulk of what Marx wrote was a critique of capitalism, nothing more.

There was no blueprint for revolution, nothing to suggest that vanguardism was a good idea.

Marx suggested that there would come a tipping point where Capitalism collapsed, and how that was likely to occur.

This is why you get different "flavours" of Marxism depending on the particular vanguard that were looking to implement socialism in spite of the prerequisites that Marx suggested were necessary not being there.

Just because killers are wearing a particular 'hat', doesn't mean that you should blame the creator of their ideology.

Millions have been murdered in the name of western democracy - does it make it a bad thing?
