You get free food.

I saw it on the news yesterday. It was an app you could collect free food from, so instead of peeps throwing it away they advertise it, so anyone collect it from their home. You just send a msg saying you want those tomatoes. They are trying out the app in london as a trial run.
Sounds like a good idea. What you recon? |

I would say anyone who can afford to own and use a device that runs apps doesn't need free food...
If free food is available there are plenty genuinely needy and deserving people who would benefit far more than the app reliant generation....

"It's a good enough idea I suppose but I'd rather see the food donated to food banks and shelters to feed the genuinely needy."
I agree some people will just abuse it to save money
round here most supermarkets have collection point for genuine food banks I think it would be a better idea for you to take your unwanted food with you next time you go shopping and put it in there |

Sounds like a brilliant idea for people who just need to get by till pay day etc but are too embarrassed/ proud to goto a food bank.
Can see it getting abused by the greedy though! |

I'd love for someone to set up something similar for trades. I grow a fair bit of food in my garden and something I don't fancy what I've grown and would love to trade it with someone who has grown something else. |

They don't take fresh or already cooked food. |

We have a rural pub our way who will swap quality homegrown vegetables for the equivalent in beer. You often see people leave vegetables and eggs outside their houses with signs saying pleas help yourself.
Great idea. |

Yes, lovely, but they don't take fresh produce.
I like the idea. I hate wasting food. |

I think it's a great idea to avoid food waste.
The report featured a local grocers, whole foods type place giving away stock they would fail to sell as well as people growing things.
Students starting uni could benefit from this.
The problem for the absolutely poor and hungry is they often don't have cooking facilities so some won't work for them. However, if you've got the app it's another way of distributing free food to those who could need and use it.
I'm going to tell the allotment folk round here about it.

When I went to New Zealand I saw that a lot.

I like this idea, the amount of times I've bought something thinking it looked nice, so I've bought like 2 or 3 of them (mostly on buy one get one free) and it's been horrible, I could get shot if it and know that someone else can make use of it, I think it's a different thing to the food bank idea, I would use it. |

I love the idea of trading. Keeps our money in our pockets and not in the hands of Tesco et al. You dont pay VAT when you swap a chair for a sack of spuds either. Sooner or later the man will attempt to start a "trade tax" no doubt. |

I love the idea.....i help at a foodbank sometimes....
But when something is an APP ....you can be sure someone is making money out of it....or will be soon x"
You know what? I don't care. Food waste is horrendous in this country and we have a simple idea to reduce the methane making landfill of food.

I've seen something like this. Local people advertise what they are growing and offer swaps to others. |

I have seen food that a certain company I work for throw out in the rubbish along comes a person looks in the bin and bags up said thrown out food then go to the next bin. The funny thing being they were not homeless people doing this |

Foodwaste is a massive problem....
Maybe supermarkets doing all these "buy one get one free" promotions should be banned....it's probably one of the biggest contributers to waste !! |

Freegans! They use the food and save it from going to landfill. Plus, you don't have to be homeless to be in food poverty, although I will admit every freegan I have met has been very middle class.

I think this is better but .... Not sure it would work ; people are lazy. ....
Now ,,,an app ,run by the soup kitchen where you , let them now what you have and they come collect it , that might work . |

I don't have the time or money to code and launch an app right now. |

When you trade in the course of a business (e.g. I am a photographer, I regularly trade with people to get stuff) then you do indeed have to pay tax on the value of your trade. |

The farm shop near us operates a swap system if you've "grown too much" as they put it. Maybe something like that would be your best bet |

A woman in Derby was fined £300 today for stealing three bottles of baby milk she couldn't afford. How crazy is this, now she has to find £300 and continue to keep her baby and herself fed, wouldn't helping her be a better solution instead of going around in circles. This society is disgusting, cruel and insane. |

Doesn't have to be in the course of a business.
If, for example, I was a tax inspector and I swapped my kids tricycle, which they had outgrown. In return I got a bunch of carrots, of much lower value; I'd still be liable for income tax on the vegetables |

Was she definitely using it for a starving baby, or was she a known thief and reselling it? Formula would sell well in the black market as it can get expensive. |

I meant private trade, as it becomes more popular, it becomes a target for the taxman, as he loses revenue from the supermarket trades. They'll always get you. Death and taxes remember....the only things in life you can truly rely on. |

It's called LETS, local exchange trading scheme. It has been around for at least 20 years to my knowledge. Some are more successful than others. Some use a local currency exchange to ensure that trades have parity. Others use Timebanks where the trade is usually in time.

That is good. My local one will only take things with a longish life, like apples but turn away most fresh items.

see if there is a local LETS scheme (that's a barter system) in your area or a local food cooperative scheme...
