"Why was it the 'hardest' day?"
Because when Bromley's Biggin Hill and other South East military bases came under attack from the German Luftwaffe, so it then was known as the hardest day.

I saw seven on there way to Portsmouth and back, but too far away to make out the mix of hurricanes to spitfires. I think there was at least one hurricane as there was a different engine note.

In advance of a church service, Prince Charles (who didn't even see the Battle of Britain) has laid a wreath at the statue to Winston Churchill (who lived many years more).

I presume Charles was a stand in for his mother, who couldn't be bothered to attend.

Or maybe his links to the RAF are a factor along with the fact his dear old mum is rather frail these days? Anyway let's not detract from the recognition of such a feat and loss of lives by all both allied and German.

Not too frail to go play with a train set.

Links to the RAF? I though he'd been in the Senior Service. There's more to it than wearing the uniform.
