Imagine you had a Time Machine and could revisit any moment in history (or the future even), where would you go and why? And would there be any moments in history you'd like to change?

I'd like to go back to the time of Jesus (and the beginnings of all other religions while I'm at it). Prove once and for all that it really is just a bunch of fairy tales.

I don't mean to be difficult but the laws of physics as I understand them state that it is only possible to travel *forwards* in time, and not to a point before the time machine was created.

You might, otherwise, go back in time, kill Jeezuz and cause a paradox, unraveling the whole future.

I can't think of a specific moment in time, but if I could go back and see anything I'd like, then I would want to spend a day in Rome at the height of the Roman Empire. Of course, for this to work, I would also hope to be in the guise of a Roman man at the time.

Explosive cavitation due to the non-compressability of brain matter (mostly water) inside the skull. Essentially the force of the material coming out of the exit wound moved his head back. This is made worse because the car he was in begins to accelerate slightly.

I'd go back in time and crucify Jesus, stab Ceasar in the back, defeat the Spanish Armada, let everyone know the Earth revolves around the Sun, invent something I call an "Atom" bomb, and start a little musical group either called "The Spiders" or "The Beatles".

Those interested in the JFK assassination and who haven't seen it, check out the 'Zapruder' tape of the assassination. It shows the shooting from a different angle and the head shot. It is a VERY graphic video and quite shocking/horrifying the first time you see it.

Saw a documentary saying JFK was shot twice by the gunman in the window but the headshot was from a secret service agent in the car behind who slammed his AR-15 rifle into the chair after the car slammed the brakes on, discharging the gun in the direction of JFK.

I own a number of time machines, or other devices with time machines incorporated into them - clocks!

As for a device that can facilitate travel backwards in time, this is simply beyond the realms of possibility.

Think about it, if you could travel backwards in time, the effects of your journey would ALREADY be felt through time. In other words, whatever effect you may have on history will have already have taken place - i.e. you can not change anything.

Travelling forwards through time, on the other had, is of course, entirely possible, and each one of us does so on a daily basis. It takes us one second to travel one second into the future.

OK, so from a hypothetical standpoint, allow me, if you will, to play devil's advocate.

Let's assume that you could be on board the Titanic on that fateful voyage, and that you had access to the bridge.

There was actually nothing wrong with the ship. It exceeded many of the safety regulations of the day. The cause of the disaster was human error. The Captain had retired for the evening and so his first officer was in command.

On sighting the Iceberg he ordered 'hard a starboard' (turn to port) and full reverse.

Neither of these actions would have resulted in the sinking of the ship - but it was the combination of the two which made the vessel turn more slowly, and thus ensuring the fatal glancing blow with the iceberg.

Had he simply ordered full reverse, Titanic would have hit the iceberg head on - The vessel would have been damaged, and no doubt injuries would have been sustained by many on board, but crucially, Titanic would have remained afloat.

Turning to port in an attempt to steer around the iceberg would have been effected quicker had the engines not been put in reverse.

Now, with all that said, let's say you could advise the first officer and prevent the sinking.

Fantastic. Around 1,700 lives would have been saved.

But...

It was as a direct result of this disaster that changes were made which made sea travel safer.

How about something a little more recent.

Space Shuttle Challenger.

Now it may not be widely known that engineers working on the booster rockets actually predicted the disaster and attempted to prevent the launch. They advised NASA senior management that if the launch were to go ahead, the vehicle would explode on the launch pad - as they knew of the problem with the o-rings in low temperatures.

So, even armed with knowledge of the fact of the disaster would unlikely be enough to prevent it.

Several events in our history have brought about change in human behaviour. Some good, some not so, but even something that may seem to be a somewhat insignificant change to an event in any part of history could have far more wide ranging implications.

As such, I wouldn't really feel comfortable with being responsible for changing an event in history.

But that's just me.
