I noticed ages ago. I never used to be able to put a whole one in my mouth but I can now!!
Last time I had brought some we had some mice in the garage who managed to open the packet, drag a wagon wheel into my wellie and have a party. Fussy bastards didn't like the marshmallowy bit though! |

It's more of an ongoing process I think.
Rather than a one off shrinkage I think some accountant somewhere has realised making it 2% smaller every now and then increases margin, but the change each time is so small that most people don't notice it.
It's only when you have one for the first time in years (when you have the cumulative effect of lots of 2% shrinkages) that you realise the size has halved! Cunning accounting / marketing ploy to make the manufacturers more money!! |

Same as beer getting lower ABV the manufacturers have to appear responsible.
The population can't take liability for being overweight from eating 10 wagon wheels a day.
Or
Sinking 10 pints of john smiths on an evening.
They have to be seen to be "doing their bit" |

They didn't do it to appear responsible. It was for tax purposes. Trust me, I worked at a brewery when the change happened. |

Monster munch pickled onion crisps is another prime example. Not only have the bags got smaller but so have the actual crisp! Did anybody used to melt the packet under the grill and make a necklace. Or was that just me?? |

I also work at a brewery, so know full well about the tax reasons, hence why different export locations have different bottle sizes, it's all about tax. But it's also a public image thing too. |
