Sunday cleaning progress report...

Edinburgh

Well so far I've cleaned the kitchen.

I decided to do it room by room today... such is my rock and roll lifestyle... cause normally I find myself in a massive guddle doing half a job in one room, going into the bedroom for washing then starting something else and by the time I've wasted four hours pottering back and forward my flat looks worse than it did when I started.

I've stopped (cause I'm a massive procrastinator) to hang out the window for a ciggie and now I've lost all momentum and can't be arsed starting the next room.

I think I'd like a cleaner.

Does anyone have any tips for a) motivation b) a quicker way to do a spring clean c) bribe ideas to get someone else to do it?!

Take before and after pics so you can see where your hard work has gone and give yourself a sense of achievement.

This time last week I was cleaning a 40yr old car, it took me 19hrs in total. I took hundreds of pictures and videos of each stage and didn't once think about quitting.

40 hours?! That's dedication! What kind of car?

Yeah I stopped for breakfast and now I'm wedged in my giant armchair! Well at least the kitchen is clean. I'm working up to the bathroom!

It was 19hrs on a 40yr old car.

It was a 1976 Triumph Dolomite 1850. It arrived a kind of flat orange colour and it left a very deep glossy red.

I can't think of anything that can motivate me to clean. I tell myself it has to be done, pick a room or area like skirting, cupboards and get stuck in. I can't usually clean to music but it motivates some people. You could reward yourself after every small job,not alcohol though or you won't finish.

Satisfying though.

So a wee Baileys in my coffee at 11.53am is acceptable then?

Have a house cleaning party and offer food and drink at the end. I used to get my sister in law or cousin in to help me do a big spring clean. It was better that way because I can't throw stuff away. Buy some nice smellies and imagine how lovely it will look and smell when you're finished.

Can't do much in the kitchen this morning, as my old fridge freezer has just departed to its new home for the princely amount of £35 while I wait for my new big black American one to arrive

Wish they'd hurry up, I want to gout and buy enough food to fill it... Sorry I lie, enough booze to fill it

Empty all bins, gather up any glasses or cups that you have lying around, go through your washing and put a load on. Put things back in the rooms they belong in. In your bedroom make your bed and chuck everything on your bed all your clothes or crap that's on the floor (that's my bedroom!) put everything on your bed so the rooms clear. Feather dust all around the ceilings and corners of the wall, polish all surfaces then start going through what's on your bed and putting it away. Sitting room start high and work down, feather dust, then polish, then wipe over the skirting boards, wash doors, radiators, plump cushions, then Hoover everywhere and mop!

I've done the washing, all the dishes are done (that's like the pots are washed for the Northerners!) and the place is relatively tidy. It's the cleaning part that I'm lazy about. I generally keep the place tidy.

I quite like cleaning but it is hard work.

The beat times I find for cleaning are when I'm really angry.

Cleaning is easy it's the tidying I can't do! Always start high and work your way down, check ceilings for blood splashes or pest infestation, high feather duster across all corners and down the walls and light fittings. Wash all doors, in bathrooms remove plugs and shower drains and spray with mould and mildew remover and leave for 10 mins, have a scrubbing brus or tooth brush and scrub all shower seals, scrub inside the taps and around the base of the tap. Wash radiators and wash all skirting boards. Pull sofas, beds and any furniture you can move yourself and Hoover behind them.

If you were close I'd clean for you, 18 months experience as a crime, trauma and bio hazardous waste cleaner!

Well theres two types of cleaning-

Circular- where you clean Round everything

Square- where you move everything and get right in the corners!

Sounds like you have a tidying problem rather than a cleaning one!

Get a cleaner. Then you tidy before they come which solves Your problem And you get a clean house!

Well I have a load of clutter but it's tidy mostly. I'm trying to do a square clean. I'm mostly procrastinating though. I'm going to make a double espresso and hope that rockets my arse into gear!

Bathroom is done!!!

Just the bedroom and sitting room to do now and they just need dusted, one floor mopped and the other hoovered.

Then I might do something about myself.

Coffee first though right?!
