Is there any subject a comedian shouldn't joke about?

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I was just thinking about taboos and certain subjects that some people think aren't suitable to have jokes made about, by both comedians and regular people.

Does anyone here think jokes should have a limit?

I myself think anything is open for humour

I think individuals will have different ideas as to what is taboo as far as comedy is concerned. I know what mine are and avoid comedians who use that kind of thing in their material.

I don't think any area is 'off limits' to those comedians that have built their reputation on 'outrageous' comedy and causing sensationalist headlines. Think of the Jimmy Savile "jokes" that have emerged (inverted commas deliberate) which shows even the most sensitive taboos are not excluded when it comes to humour

Anyone making jokes about people being killed or abused is a wanker in my eyes. There's plenty of other things to joke about. Taking the piss out of someone who can't do anything about their situation is low to me too.

There is no taboo subjects

Comedians, the best ones, make you laugh at things you really shouldn't and then you examine why you laughed?

It's only funny till somebody gets hurt.

Then it's hilarious

Comedians cant say jack nowadays. Too many right and wrongs. Yes you can be funny without swearing and talking about others misfortune.

Laurel and hardy class act

Morcombe and wise

Two ronnies

None of them said a bad word on there shows and was some of the best. But then you get people like.

Frankie boyle

Peter kay (yes he does swear) brilliant though.

The point is these people get paid to make others laugh if you dont like it dont watch it simples. Pc brigade gone mad again.

No limit or we are fucked as a society.

We just need to be able to boo and hiss when someone is shit and unfunny.

I think the same.

You can tell when he's being offensive he's actually making a point about something, not just saying it to be a cunt but to point out what's wrong with the world and the people in it.

Roy Chubby Brown is just some knock off bernard manning with swearing.

Think it depends on how it's done, there's a few disabled comedians that joke about their conditions but it's done in a way that they're having power over it. Comedians that just target the unfortunate aren't that funny.

I would say it depends on the attitude to the subject and how it is handled.

Much of the "humour" of, say, Jim Davidson or Freddie Starr isn't the sort of "humour" I tend to consider funny or appropriate.

Sometimes. Sometimes he's an absolute arsehole that I'd very much like to boot very hard in the bollocks.

He's a funny guy. He doesn't need to use some of the stuff he comes out with.

I don't find his comedy particularly funny i'm afraid.

Far, far better comedians about that can be funny without being distasteful and disrespectful

This is always interesting to me - the concept that something unacceptable becomes acceptable depending who says it.

Eg in the example above, is it ok to make disabled jokes if you're disabled yourself but not if you aren't?

A bit like it seems to be ok for black people to use the 'N' word but not for anybody else (again the 'ownership' argument comes in to play) and "how can I be racist I'm an Indian myself" etc

My view is that if something is unacceptable it's unacceptable whoever says it, there shouldn't be 'acceptability apartheid'

By the way I'm not knocking the OP of this post, it's just a point that I've genuinely always found interesting

Titz Towers, North Notts

Comedy is incredibly subjective and what one person finds funny another will find totally tasteless.

There are a lot of comedians who do dark material that could be considered tasteless by some audiences. Some do it for shock effect, but the best put thought into it and build a routine around it. I know a comedian from Northampton who can be incredibly dark and actually provoked a fracas at one gig I was at, but in essence he wasn't being tasteless.

Regarding disabled comedians, I've seen a few of them. I distinguish between:

Disabled comedians

Comedians who just happen to be disabled

The latter are more consistently funny and have a wider range.

Swearing - some comedians swear for effect, if overused it becomes counterproductive, but a well placed fuck or C-bomb can work wonders.

I think very few subjects should be off limits.

A good comedian will use an offensive joke to highlight certain social issues....

A comedians material is only funny if the audience laugh ,,,,,,and some people will laugh and others won't......

So surely the audience is barometer of what is acceptable and what is not...

Some audiences have bad taste in my opinion..

not that great on stand up comedians to be honest..

I can understand some aspects when comedians are using taboo subjects in an ironic manner etc.. unfortunately, Franky Boyle for example..has some great observational humour, he's quick witted, sharp tongued and intelligent..

yet can reduce himself to the CUNT category when he starts making jokes about disabled children...

My opinion is many people laugh at jokes, in a sort of mass hysteria like manner..if some guy walked up to me in a party and started a joke session with many offensive routines..I'd tell him to fuck off and stop being a cunt...put him on stage, and he becomes untouchable..

audience hysteria- even canned laughter can make others find something funnier than it probably was..

Can't stand chubby, Boyle, Davidson.

Comedians from a different era, working man's club style comedy.

Racist, homophobic, stuff. No thanks.

Prefer rhod Gilbert, Eddie izzard...

I went to see Jimmy Carr once and he made a rape joke. A few laughed but most of the room went quiet. I was sat in the front and I remember him looking at me for almost 7 or so seconds as I shook my head slowly.

He apologized to the room and moved on. I guess some comedians are there to test boundaries but rape and death jokes are too far for me.

Rape jokes are only ok if they're targeting rape culture instead of the victims of rape, IMO.

I think my problem really is that 'offensive' comedians are essentially trolls. Obviously they have let themselves be public, but they are hiding behind their fame and the fans that adore them.

After making a joke about princess diana 's death lets say, would I approach her sons and then be all nicey nicey..or would they be with me?

I find Jeremy Clarksons thinly disguised as 'entertainment' humour, quite disgusting- especially as on the top gear show, which I'm sure has a family audience..can be littered with off the cuff racist jokes(high brow racism possibly?). Anyone else employed by a company would know the consequences of such behaviour..but because of the fame angle..we let it pass...

and we all know what happens when famous people are given carte blanche for their misbehaviour..dont we...
