One in Walsall by the EDL
and the White Man march Liverpool,
What will they actually gain from these demonstrations apart from staring up racial tension and disruption for everyone else,
I just hope the media stays away and doesn't give the attention that they want |

"Hey, if Muslim hate rallys are legal, then why shouldn't these be? Equal rights and all that.
Do you support either?
Nope."
Then why would you want either demos to be allowed under the guise of equal rights/free speech? They're violent, aggressive and spread hate. |

They only have the right to a peaceful protest, most of their demos aren't. |

You're right, which ultimately leads to the question, should everyone be allowed freedom of speech, even violent and hate filled folk such as Muslim extremists/angry youths and white supremacists, or should it be controlled by the government? |

Of course not, that's a silly proposition. Our government is a democracy and it makes sense to be ruled by the majority's opinions/desires. |

Muslim hate rallies?
Muslim...hate...rallies...
No even repeating it slowly, it is still a pile of contrived Britain first half truth.
Anyway freedom of speech hurts sometimes. But it is worth hurting for. Trust me, a world without it hurts a lot more.
Let pricks be pricks.
These marches are great. We can see all the bell-ends in one place and make sure we never have to deal with them in real life. |

You must've never seen the extreme Islam protests where they make inflammatory statements (eg death to British soldiers).
They're not great. What a pompous statement, it's a terrible state to be in where our country is so divisive. |

Not exactly the same as media exposure is it,
And if anyone wants to declare their alliance with either of them they would just go on my block list as they are not the type of people I would like to associate with |

People get confused about free speech. Free speech does not mean anyone has the right to say anything they want to whom ever and where ever they choose, there are limits and restrictions as there should be. |

No, that's just the UK's legal interpretation of free speech. The actual definition is freedom to say anything without risk of censorship. It's different from country to country (the U.S. being one of the most "free"). |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
Have a listen to the series £3 In My Pocket.
The second series episode this week covered 1976 to 1981 and ended with the death of Blair Peach.
Some of us have lived through this before. Seeing it again, pumped up on the steroids of mass social media is not pleasant. The story is fundamentally the same.

No. Freedom of speech means you can say what you like. However if what you say is awful you also have the responsibility to face the consequences. |

Some pricks who are muslim say things which are pretty unpleasant. However they are free to hold which opinions they wish. But we must challenge them and show them for the ignorant fools they are. Exactly how we should treat the white supremacist racists the OP was referring to. Idiots need to be given enough rope to hang themselves. Exposure destroys them. It is not pompous to suggest that getting to see who these knob are is a good thing. |

I think it's arrogant to say that the demonstrations will eat themselves when it clearly drums up new support. Also, in the UK hate speech can be criminal under certain statutes, so those "Muslim pricks" or "white supremacist racists" aren't free to spread hatred either. |

I think it may have done, the Neo-Nazis only numbered about 20 from what I read and they had to be escorted by the police into the tube station afterwards.
I read an account of a writer at The Guardian who lived locally. When the protest started a lot of people knocked on doors to get the neighbours to join the counter-protest, which he did. |

The business community there were very active in leafletting to let people know the march would be going through the area. The talked up fears of their shops being damaged too. It garnered television coverage in the run up to the march and nothing much after.

Always better to know who the loonies are.
Just the agoraphobic loonies left to find.
I do believe this in my heart. I'd even like to see extremist parties permitted. It makes it much easier to keep an eye on the worrying one's than letting them just get angry in private. |

I think a lot of the pre-coverage media was to get the protest stopped completely.
When that didn't happen the locals and others made sure they mounted their own counter but then denied the crazies any further exposure once it was over.
To think... all that work for 20 right-wing-crazies. |

This is how it starts...
you give a link to an edited video..(pretty much staged to promote the expression of the flag bearers intent)
then give a link to something that is not prosecutable(it it explains that in the article)
As I've said..neither types interest me..the contrived need for publicity on both events is only to cause outrage and skew peoples viewpoints to an agenda

There are many of them who believe they are the new underclass. The rhetoric I have seen has it that equality has meant they have lost their rights, nay had them ripped away from them.
There is an issue around class, which affects all ethnicities, that we don't talk about any more. Instead we polarise into the feckless benefit scroungers, immigrants stealing our jobs and our benefits and politicians being on the make.
We need to tackle disaffection but right now I am so tired of seeing the same issues again and again I don't have any suggestions.

In the short term it may. But look at the BNP. All but defunct. That happened because they were given room to vent their spleen and they exposed themselves.
You cannot stop racists from existing but you can stop them from being able to influence general culture.
No reasonable person will look at an EDL March for instance and think that is for them. Anyone who does will already be of that volition and just looking for a group to vindicate them. Best keep all the wankers in one box.
There always has been and always will be a racist element in British culture. That will not go away quickly but we can ensure that we minimise their influence using tried and tested methods.
Also the fact that you can be prosecuted for saying things is very worrying.
What if the authorities class anyone criticising the government as hate speech? It no longer takes an act of parliament to make that illegal.
Is this what we want? |

Still disagree, in any free country there are things you are not allowed to say, in certain circumstances. Free speech gas responsibility, inciting violence is illegal, threatening to kill someone is illegal etc etc you cannot say these things freely not should you. It is illegal in Germany to fly a swastika for example.
Yes people are free to express their views and ideas and opinions but in any society there are limits laid down by leaders of some description.
Personally I don't think displaying an Isis flag or a swastika in the UK should be tolerated and hiding behind the " free speech" argument shouldn't allow those who wish to destabilise our society to succeed |

Unfortunately when governments have been put in charge of peoples rights to free speech and peaceful demonstration almost anywhere around the world they generally create far more problems than they solve. |

There was a funny two-parter experiment on BBC1 last year with Nick Hewer and Margaret Mountford. I can't remember what it was called, but it was something like "Immigrant Britain".
They paired a British person with an immigrant. Listen to the Brits and you will see a clear articulation that something has been taken away from them, as though they have no agency over their own lives at all.

Is it? Hatred and fear leads to instability and possible anarchy. Would seem to me that that would be far more in the interests of those that don't currently have power but want it. You sure you're not looking in the wrong direction? |

And it's this rhetoric that needs to be challenged.
What can white heterosexual men not do now that they could x-number of years ago?
Pinch womens arses? "
Nope, they can still do that. We're just allowed to challenge it now without being regarded as lesbians. |

Someone above mentioned that the BNP were defunct. My point was that the party might be, but the ideology isn't, which ties in with the Neo-Nazi protests. |

Just to be clear the bnp go nowhere near ukip in terms of votes cast.
Whilst extremist over simplify to get there message across, others over simplify to just discount views that are not necessarily racist.

I might find English people mildly infuriating politically, but they have never voted in an extremist government. I think we're safe. |

Too many discount reasonable views on population control as racist.
A lack of population control leads to hunger starvation and war for limited resources.
It's not an unreasonable argument to make that a country should be able to feed itself. Any more than that and it is short term thinking. |

Ok I found a few, so it seems she didn't get arrested, she got a different flag taken off her that police thought was "an inappropriate message"
The police don't say what the message was...but I am still none the wiser why the Isis flag wasn't deemed "inappropriate" too. |

The police don't say what the message was...but I am still none the wiser why the Isis flag wasn't deemed "inappropriate" too."
Maybe for several reasons...
1 - The fact that this flag had a written message may have made it easier to spot/identify/be angered by.
2 - Maybe no one at the scene of the Isis flag approached the police at that time to complain about it - it's easy to identify from photos afterwards.
But why does one affect actions upon the other?
If the police arrive at a burglary and catch the culprit should they say "we didn't arrest every burglar today so we have to let you go"? |

Not very often you can explain something with a quote from Ali G, but in the case of EDL you very much can,

The whole purpose of democracy is to allow freedom of speech for all sections of society.
Yes some will be deemed distasteful by virtue of their beliefs and perspectives, but quashing their voice doesn't represent freedom of speech for all.
That's why we have laws that govern their voice and to cater for intentional offence or the inciting of hatred. I think we should be proud of the fact we have a Country that fights to keep a balance regardless of the negative isolated incidents. |

The march in Liverpool died on its' arse. Looking at the photos of the racists wearing black, faces concealed (white hoods must be out this year), I thought it ironic they were so against burkas as the effect was very similar. |

"My fav news report of the day .... pictures of the marchers in Liverpool hiding behind the shutters of the lost luggage kiosk in the rail station while crowds attempt to pelt them with eggs.
So this is how democracy works ,if someone says something you don't agree with pelt them with eggs, "
yep. Especially when they threaten to start riots if they are not allowed to march.
Should of been hard boiled eggs !

"Hey, if Muslim hate rallys are legal, then why shouldn't these be? Equal rights and all that.
I would hate to live in Luton after seeing one of the Anti British Muslim marches
It was terrifying |

Throwing food is a long held English traditional pastime.
It was a regular occurance before some fool invented TV to pop down to the stocks for some food throwing.
Great interactive entertainment.
Of course in them days only the posh could afford to throw eggs.
And people say living standards have not risen, yet we have the peasant folk throwing eggs.
