Horse riders.

When I'm out on my bike, cycling the lanes of Wiltshire and Hampshire I see my fair share of horse riders. The sex of said riders is predominately female. Yet professional horse riders, race and show seem to be male in the main. Why? Is this like catering where women can be cooks but men are chefs?!

granted there is, but in racing its a much tougher sport and imagine big breast jumping fencing plus suprisingly its weight issue as most females weigh more than 8.5 stone that enter the sport

women can race yes they seem to have more success on the flat than racing over obsticles

I know there are female jockeys but I don't know if they are restricted in terms of which races they can ride in. I wouldn't be surprised.

Just to add, when my mum was a teenager she had an interest in technology and expressed an interest in being an engineer or electrician.

When I asked her why she didn't pursue it, she said she was actively discouraged from doing it, as not something that a woman should do, and so she didn't think any more of it.

Makes me so mad to think that people were stopping her from achieving her goals by getting in her way.

Planting seeds of doubt and discouragement in girls should be a thing of the past but I'm not sure that it's dead and buried.

a do think there should be more females in racing but you need to take into account without being biased the difficulties they face,, pregnancies. you dont want a female falling at 35 miles an hour whilst pregnant and theres weight issues too as all jockeys male and female starve themselves to maintain weight. its the only sport in the world that an ambulance follows them as they race

There are lots of disciplines within equestrianism where females compete on a level with men, including (and not just limited to) carriage driving, eventing, show jumping and dressage.

Women are at the top in these disciplines- just look at the results in the last olympics.

Racing is a male dominated sport, admittedly but there are amateur riders that are very talented.

As a hobby- yes it seems predominantly female, still not sure why after working with them for over 20years!

personally a go to about 50 races traacks a year some more than once, and it would be nice to see more female jockeys, but the perception and i think its wrong is they cant be as good as men

sad i think, many a time ive overheard guys and females saying ohh dont back that its a female jockey

This makes me mad. If someone wants to do or be something, they should be encouraged.

As for horse riding, I used to work security at some horse events and generally saw equal numbers of men and women on average, dunno about actual racing, never got into it,and I can not remember having ever seen a male rider out on the roads... Maybe a guys tend to prefer to ride around the fields?

Because RACING is a historically male- dominated sport.

I didn't say it was a good thing. Just reality.

I worked in racing and studs around Newmarket and the majority of yards had a fairly even split of male-female lads and lasses on the yard.

Women are still discriminated against when it comes to working up the ranks.

I wonder if its the perception that ambitious women are 'bitches' whislt ambitious men are to be admired?

Perhaps for some it's just the competitive element? Some women are happy simply looking after horses and riding them for fun and some men are more driven by the sport side of owning horses.

My nephew has been riding since he was 4. It's very hard to find kids horse related stuff that isn't pink and sparkly!!

I doubt I can remember how to now. I was only at an intermediate stage when I stopped.

The lady did a dressage competition last night and 90% of the competitors were female. When she does 3 day eventing it's normally the same ratio with females (usually her) coming out on top.

I went back to riding after a few years off. 1st lesson was five, stayed on etc then went to dismount and my legs turned to jelly!! Fell on my arse as soon as my feet hit the ground. Was feeling muscles I never knew I had for data afterwards!

Ridden on lanes, roads and tracks loads and never consider it to be in any way a " girlie" thing at all. Yes at our yard most are female but that's because most are either teenage girls or middle aged women who don't work with well off hubby's lol.

As for equestrian sport women compete on an even basis unlike most sports they aren't separate and do very well in show jumping dressage and eventing, more and more flat jockeys too. Jump jockeys are all clinically insane, skinny nut jobs I just think women have more sense lmao

Haha, good point! There's quite a few ladies riding Point to Point, and plenty of men on the hunting field. And whilst the hoorays also go eventing, showjumping has long been the preserve of burly Yorkshiremen!

From some of the female horse riders I have spoken in the past, it is family life that gets in the way of some sports women.

It might have changed, but there is a few women I work with used to compete years ago, as they jokingly say BC, before children.

It is a well known "FACT" that riding horses makes women cum... The horse was without a doubt the worlds first powered sex toy. Whilst this is highly satisfying for the ladies in question, it's hardly conducive to racing. The reason is very simple and stems from the history of horse racing.

Racing is a development of hunting (point to point)

When men ride they straddle the horse when ladies ride they used to ride side saddle (yes even when hunting over fences the ladies would ride side saddle).

This puts them at a disadvantage for speed.

It was considered unladylike for a lady to straddle a horse therefore any lady with breeding would not race (Racing was expensive and only those with money could afford to race).

In modern times both sexes race and jump.
