When i took out my gym membership i took advantage of 1 of 3 free sessions they give you with a personal trainer. Wasnt over impressed as the very young girl doing the session was supervised by a older colleague & didnt seem confident.

Anyway after the session i was sore for a week after. I had explained i hadnt been to the gym for 3 years & dont think that fact & the fact i was carrying quite a bit of excess weight (around 5 stone to shift) was taken into account.

Anyway i have taken my diet in hand this year and lost over 2 stone & started using the gym regularly.

My concern is i am not doing the right things in the gym for what i want to achieve.

Should i risk another session & ask for a more mature trainer or try google for advice?

The soreness was most likely DOMS rather than a fault on the part of the PT.

That said being given a revised ttraining plan after so long is probably not a bad idea

What parts of your body did you train? Did you do weights or cardio or both?

It's pretty normal to get doms or muscle soreness when you've trained a specific body part. I usually get it bad 2 days after I've trained legs heavy.

I put it all down to planks. Was all my upper body that ached.

I eventually went back but did my own thing. I would like to see what i should be doing & the science behind it all

Yeah, I'd second Shag's comments. You don't really need a PT these days.

All the info you need is across YouTube/Google.

Good luck with your endeavours.

Planks are for increasing your core muscle strength. If you're looking for weight loss you need to look at what you're eating. Once your diet is on point then you should venture to the gym, work out a routine (with your PT) get all the knowledge you can, read, watch YouTube tutorials, whilst you have the free personal trainer sessions ask then to help you with your form, lifting, squatting etc start off with no weights until you've perfected how to do it then increase the weight.

Best thing to do is go even though your aching, get some good rest, eat some good food and then go back and do it again.

I recently started training strongman and for the first week I was liking a walking zombie and ached like I'd been run over. After resting well and eating well and carrying on my body for used to it. Obviously I still ache like mad but your body gets used to it and the aching isn't as severe.

It's your body's way of fighting change...just stick at it

Does your club have a video plate, use it after exercising if they do, it's sends the blood to the muscle and stops the ache.

For what it's worth, alternate what you do, try swimming for upper body, then in the gym for bottom ha,f,using the cross trainer, treadmill, and bike .

Good luck with it and I hope you get hooked on going

Don't forget to only drink a protein shake as you walk out of the gym just so everyone knows you've been to the gym

And rule number 1 is post you've been to the gym on Facebook or the whole workout was pretty much worthless

Essex.

If weight loss is what you after, think about swimming, cycling and cross trainer. They will all help but are low impact on the joints...

Also Google HIIT as it's good for fat burning...

Keep up the good work...

Do your research, work out what you want to achieve, look at real life results, not 'celebrity' workouts. There is plenty of info out there.

Eat clean, train smart. Set progressive achievable goals both for body shape and fitness. Change your routine regularly to keep your body guessing and your mind active.

Don't get obsessed with the scales, they only tell a small truth.

If you struggle, ask for help. If you lose motivation on your own, a PT or a class workout could be a good change.

Good luck

Firstly congratulations, sounds like you've made some good progress over the last 12 months.

Secondly it's very difficult for people to give advice, without you stating what your goals (is it still the additional 3 stone?) are and what your current programme looks like.

And lastly if you still have the free sessions available you might as well check it out, go with a mindset of what you are looking to get out of it - sounds like even with it not working last time you were still motivated to carry on. Worst case scenario you get some advice on form and some exercise ideas from it.

My goal is to lose weight & tone up. I think my biggest goal is to get fitter. I want to learn to love the gym/exercise as much as i do other things in life.

As for diet i try to eat good wholesome foods which is reflected in my weight loss this year. Struggling a bit at the moment, not sure why. Trying to refind my mojo. I rarely weigh as i hate the scales with a vengeance...

Thanks all for the advice

Personal trainers are a joke for the most part amongst the bodybuilding community.

I NEVER train in gyms..waste of money - I just workout in my garage & anyone wanting to workout is welcome to join me & it won't cost a penny.

All the equipment needed to build & shape a body to whatever level I have

Keep in mind 1lb of fat is only 5000cals approx. So should not take long to burn off IF you put your mind to it.

I can get ANYONE into any shape they want for nothing - I just like to help people that need or want it.

IF your willing to listen & follow the advice I give I can give you want you want.

Not boasting just stating a fact.

I've worked with people that have had heartaches, high blood pressure, disabled, scoliosis etc etc.

Have you thought about doing a park run?. It's a organized free 5km run every Saturday at locations up and down the country. It's great way for people to get fit without having to run on your own and meet new people. Loads of encouragement from other runners and marshals no matter what your ability
