Winter is here and our native birds are finding food scarce.
Please go to the pet shop and buy a bag of nuts for our feathered friends.
There is no finer sight on a winters morning than a pair of tits around your nut sack.... Just remember however its a bit early in the year,
to expect a swallow! |

But seriously...
Grated cheese that has gone a bit hard is perfect for little birds like dunnocks and wrens, just scatter it under some bushes and they will find it. They suffer really badly in prolonged cold spells.
Fat from the kitchen can be poured over an old tree stumps bark or a log, the tits and nuthatch's will find it pretty quickly.
Also avoid cheap peanuts that go black quickly, they contain toxins that can kill birds. Bread is also bad, better to toast it or let it go stale and then turn it into crumbs.
Wash your feeders with a mild detergent every 3 or 4 weeks as well.
Niger seed is another good one for finches, they love it.

We must have well fed birds round here as I took all the advice that was given on here last year and the feckers did'nt want any of it
But I do have lots of bushes and berries in the garden so they must prefer those to the peanuts and fat balls |

Not a good sign if he's still out and about to be honest. DON'T give him milk, it gives them really bad diarrhoea and can even kill them.
You can get special hedgehog food online but cat or dog food is okay as well, not biscuits though. The other thing to consider is putting a hedgehog box under some bushes for him to use. Put a load of dry leaves in (not straw, it gets caught around their legs) and hopefully he'll uses it.

Thanks all have put a box out with dry leaves under the hedge with some cat food. Think I will keep an eye out for him and if hes there in the morning take him to the local vets and they can sort out a rescue centre. |
