I am no longer sponging of the state
Jump to: Newest in thread
"After nearly 7 years I finally signed off, just roll on Monday now...
Then roll on 18th Sept as that's 1st pay day as I have about £100 to last 40 days, that's if I don't pay a couple of bills. "
Good news.
Hope it leads to much happiness x |

As someone who has been claiming for 4 weeks, I go back to work in 2 weeks. Signed off for 6 weeks hospital etc. It's offensive to read sponging off the state. |

Well done.
I do think when you sign off because you have employment the social should pay you up until your first pay cheque.
I've come across people that have really struggled that first month as they are getting money from nowhere

I agree, especially when you`ve paid thousands in tax and NI over the decades, the only spongers are politicians and tax evaders. |

Yes.
There's supposed to be a 'tapering off' of benefits to ease the transition, or has that gone the way of the White Whale? |

They used to be Job Grants, but they ended in April 2013 |

I think there should be a work package that includes a small work clothes allowance(vouchers) travel fare for first month and a last months benefit until pay day, it would be a helping hand for people who hopefully would have broke the benefit cycle |

I have a friend who was on unemployment benefit something like 7 years ago. He was offered a job but he couldn't start it for a few months because it required security clearance and a lot of paperwork.
The job centre said because he'd accepted a job he was no longer unemployed and told him he had to sign off immediately, even though he wouldn't have an income for months.
He had no end of hassle over it. I can't remember how it panned out but I think he might have had to transfer to income support or something. He was left without any money for several weeks whilst it got sorted out. |

I think it may be tongue in cheek as people who are on the dole get called scroungers on here a lot.

Ridiculous eh?
The told my friend that to be eligible for unemployment benefit he had to be available for work. As he'd agreed to a job, he wasn't available for work so had to sign off.
What on earth is the point of wasting an employer's time going to an inter_iew for a job you can't take?! |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
OP, enjoy your time between now and Monday as you're technically on holiday.
On Monday drinks lots of water and take a menthol stick or paracetamol for the 4:29pm first day headache.
If you need an advance speak to your HR department, they will understand. They want you to turn up every day and not fail because circumstances mean you can't pay the bus fare.
It is a shame that the into work support package has gone as it was hard fought for to introduce it in the first place. The recognition that if people start their work life getting into debt it creates other problems and often leads to a return to benefits seems to have been lost.

_hyllyphylly,
Dont think of it as sponging. I take it you've worked in the past, paid tax and NI?
All you're doing in getting some of your own money back while unemployed.
Congrats on the new job. |

I did some inter_iews on this and the official answer was that they may get a temporary job for say two weeks. If they do the claimant should accept that.

That was back when the ethos really was helping people back to work.
These days, "helping people back to work" means letting them starve and freeze until they manage to find any sort of job, however crappy, without any help, or they simply capitulate and die. Either way saves on spending on benefits. |

Welcome to the world of work, living hand to mouth despite working twelve plus hours a day, never having money for a holiday, living on white label tesco goods and having two masters degrees .... at least what do makes a difference. Happy to pay my taxes to hell those less able to manage than I am, but honestly think the only people sponging off the state are those not paying their fair share or doing their but, ie the wealthy .... |

Yeah because that's really likely... Companies looking for someone for 2 weeks don't tend to bother with inter_iews and go through agencies.
It may well breach any contract already signed to take another role, even temporary, before starting too.
It's such good sense for someone to risk a permanent job to take a really short-term temporary contract.
I wonder if the people who make these rules actually have brains. |

Congratulations!! Really mean that, I'm chuffed for you
When I signed off I was lucky to get a clothing grant and a bus pass for the first month. Apparently they can still do them at their discretion... But I don't know if that was partly because I'd been signing on for less than 12 months (by the skin of my teeth). |

"Unemployed long term" I think is the key thing there.
Most people are annoyed with long term unemployed without good reason.
Someone's got a bad few months/year after losing their job fair enough they need the help but over 5 years?
Sorry but there's no excuse to be just unemployed for that long.
If you're incablable of work fair enough but just sitting on jsa is different.
Your work package idea would be open to abuse though from multiple claims. |

Or its because the system is set up to deal with the majority of cases.
So it puts one or two people in a bizarre situation but works most effectively for say 90% of the cases they deal with it makes sense
Rather than a massively less efficency case by case basis that would cost much more but avoid the odd outlier situation. |

Why don't you set up like a help fund on a free site? I'd be gladly willing to chip in a fiver? I'm sure others would to! It would be a nice gesture from us all |

Just before I landed this job, I had to sign on at the beginning of december, midway through and then in the new year. I got my letter offering me my job a week into December, to start work on Jan 2nd. When I next went to sign on, mid December, I was asked (by a guy who couldn't keep his face straight) if I was going to be looking for work between then and the start of my new job. He was laughing almost as much as me. I think they are actually serious now though. |
