"Thanks everyone. For the private messages too.
Cracking on at work so I can finish early. Can't make my wife do this alone.
God this is hard. "
You'll be heavy of heart when you have to do it. But think of the joy you've had together and that he/she will go to sleep seeing you both there, his/her best friends. |

You are doing the right thing.
I can still feel the heartache when we finally faced facts over our much loved dog.
I'd put him through years of hell keeping him alive on tablets.
I now know it's not the right thing. |

"Taking my big dog to the vet later. That awful time has come. "
Aww hugs - 'Better a week early than a day late'. Remember the greatest kindness is to make sure they don't suffer and let them go right. x |

Tribute to a Best Friend
Sunlight streams through window pane onto a spot on the floor.....
then I remember,
it's where you used to lie, but now you are no more.
Our feet walk down a hall of carpet, and muted echoes sound.....
then I remember,
it's where your paws would joyously abound.
A voice is heard along the road, and up beyond the hill,
then I remember,
it can't be yours..... your golden voice is still.
But I'll take that vacant spot of floor and empty muted hall,
and lay them with the absent voice and unused dish along the wall.
I'll wrap these treasured memories in a blanket of my love,
and keep them for my best friend until we meet above.
Huge hugs on such a sad day xxx |

I was the same with a dog I had years ago, had him 12 years and I couldn't let go, I felt I was doing the right thing keeping him alive in medication till I gave myself a slap one day and told myself I was just a selfish twat, I put my own feelings before his need and it's wasn't on
took him to the vets and after I wished I'd done it months ago, I just selfishly drags is life out because I couldn't bare to loose him
it's very sad but the best all round really x |

I can't read this just now. I will later when I can cry freely. Thank you. Xx |

"It's times like this that I wish I had a harder heart.
Damn my emotional nature. "
We are whom we are, don't be too hard on yourself its all part of the process..
last week we were both sat with tears in our eyes as one of our dogs was still fitting and after a couple of years and more or less on the last type of meds we bot know its only a time issue..
all part and parcel of having and loving our pets..
maybe not so now as the little sod has just passed wind..
hope the day goes as well as these things can.. |

"Advice would be to not read all of these and enjoy your last afternoon ..."
If I'm honest. I'm just skimming them. I keep crying as it is.
I'm planning straight after. We'll take our other dog for a long walk. Hold hands and breathe in the day. |

Hugs to you, I have had to have two great friends put to sleep in the past and I openly cried buckets over both of them, the staff at my vets were very understanding and gave us plenty of time to say goodbye xxx |

I haven't read the whole thread but as an animal lover, I feel terrible for you.
My cats are young but I am already in fear of that day. Not sure how I will cope I just hope at that time, I would cope better than if something happened to them today
Take care x |

I'm so sorry for you. Hugs. I don't know what I'm going to do when it's my two dogs' time. This type of thing really gets me upset. I'm sure you have made the most of your time together.

Keep crying. I cried for 4 hrs when I lost my dog. Had the worst headache of my life.
Never had another one since...that was 30 yrs ago
Enjoy your walk, embrace your loss and pet your other faithful friend. They have lost their BFF today too.

We have had dogs all of our lives and it's never been easy.
The last has actually left a mental scar on me.
I was in farming for many years and never had any problems with any of the vets, in fact some became good friends, but these were different.
We had a St Bernard and one night she developed colic, I knew that was going to be it and we drove to the emergency vets with heavy hearts.
They wouldn't even let us in the door to look at the dog until they had £250.
Appalled and utterly disgusted we complied but coming across heartless greedy money grabbing whilst comforting a dying friend tends to lead to ill feeling to that practice. |

You are giving them their dignity, remember that, and be brave and stay with them so they have their human xxx |

Most on here will probably agree that I can be cold hearted and lack empathy for my fellow man, but I'll tell you now I absolutely adore dogs and think they're the best people in the world.
Don't be afraid to cry and express your grief, our canine companions are truly special. |

My dog really is this mans best friend, I hate to imagine how I will feel when she leaves. Really feel for you.
There's some lovely things said on this thread by some lovely people. Hope it helps you both |

Today has been awful. Thank you to all of you. Especially those who took the time to PM me.
Calling my youngest daughter and having to tell her over the phone and hearing her pain was unbearable.
I think this particular dog really got to me because he was so reliant on us. He's not been a well dog all the way through. He was massive but so gentle.
A celebrity in the village. It's going to be hard to face people.
Thank you all.
Once again, the members of fab have been there.
Love you all xxxxx |
