"Must Take" Holiday Food

Does anyone else have foods they just MUST take on holiday with them?
Obviously we're looking forward to 'proper' Neopolitan ice cream, Pisan pizzas, Bolognese from Bologna and er, seeing if Venetian boatmen really do sell Cornettos,
but you can't take the risk when it comes to Peanut butter or a proper cup of Yorkshire tea can you?

I take no food. If I go away I travel light and eat local as the locals eat...even down to eating staff curries with the cleaners in thailand...one taste and a bug hug for them in public and they adopted me as their own and fed me for 3 days |

I take that back. I didn't know about the geography of peanut butter. I have it on good authority that you can get it in Italy in the bigger supermarkets tho it's not easy apparently. Shit |

I usually take some peppermint teabags to settle my stomach (I have mild allergies) but I'd never take any food with me, unless I wasn't going to be able to buy any where I was going. |

Potato bread
Soda bread

On the one hand, I'm happy to gamble, but then there was that time we bought a nice-looking 'soft cheese with blackcurrants' only to discover an evil product that stank the car out for days.
Still, we soon learnt the German for 'serving suggestion', and not to rely so much on pictures! |

Nope... I take myself on holiday to enjoy the things a new place has to offer. I don't drink tea but I can understand the need for a decent cuppa. Decent coffee can be found in most places so I don't worry about that. I certainly don't go on holiday to cook! |

And I don't go on holiday to meet Brits, unlike most posters on the world wide forum. |

the thought of going on holiday and taking food from here baffles me. Why go on holiday if you 'have' to take your own stuff.
travelling should be about experiencing new things and exploring. |

Because for certain meals we like our own stuff
Being near 50 we have travelled far and wide over the years and been open to sampling many cuisines, but in our opinion you just can't beat a good old british/irish fry up for breakfast. |

Me neither but I have found everywhere I went mostly had restaurants serving similar food to what we eat here. Steak, fish, chicken all with chips, jacket potatoes or sauté potatoes. One hotel had a different country's food each night. English,Italian,Turkish and American. We only had Tunisian food when we stopped in a village during a 2 day tour. |

What do you mean? Holidays are the ONLY time the kids get McDonalds!
Mrs DDC"
(Sadly this is almost true , still seeing the differences is just as fascinating, and ordering a beer or glass of wine with one's 'euro-saver' burger in Paris is both delightfully gauche and discombobulating at the same time!)

We went to a delightful restaurant in Bruges, where the maître d' prided himself in guessing your nationality before you even spoke, and handing you a menu tailor-made for you.
Ours was mainly 'egg and chips'. Made us sad to be British! |

"What's a holiday?
*sigh* "
I was thinking this....if we do get to go anywhere it's normally a few days camping so that the kids can say they have been on holiday. I find that there's normally a local tesco or other such supermarket nearby that caters to all our food/drink requirements.
If we were lucky enough to be able to afford to go elsewhere though, I'd certainly not be packing food, but looking forward to seeing what's on offer where I'm going. |

I can walk 100 up the road and get a better selection of foreign foods than I've ever been offered abroad. With one exception I just remembered when I went on a day trip to Boulogne with a school faculty. The language teacher took us to a nice restaurant that served French food. It was horrible. The patisserie on the other hand was orgasmic. |

Ahh, Mrs S, that's too bad . You'd be surprised what you can get away with for surprisingly little.
(Though admittedly we've been saving for this particular holiday for 5 years)
We generally camp, sometimes even wild-camping, and we love seeing how the local supermarkets compare to what we have. The main problem I find is tea: while most countries drink coffee, tea, if you can find it, is often no more than a cheap teabag waved at luke-warm water. |

Just debated buying Almond nut butter today, they even make Cashew nut butter too but boy is it pricey |

I generally despise brits abroad...hate the whole ex pat thing. Some places I will never go again as they were full of d*unk brits eating english food in an irish bar. They just want home with added sun. And the locals cater for it... |

It saddens me a little bit when I see that people take food away on holiday with them.
Why go to a foreign country and not embrace their food? It's only for a few days, you won't die if you don't have heinze baked beans lol
I avidly avoid the 'ye olde red lion' in any resort I go to |
