So who going to install it today ?
I'll be doing mine later.
Yes it's free if you run windows 7 8 and 8.1. BUT you must activate it within one year to be free.

its ok no internet explorer replaced with edge, which doesn't have an automatic history delete.
the snapscreen function is nicer, when you drag something to the side, you then get mini versions of the other windows open and you click one and it automatically snaps that to the other side.
Media player works nicely... still working on the rest

Not really arsed, I've got a PC that's still running vista and it continues to work and do what I need it to. Constant upgrading causes me grief and inevitably time when stuff doesn't work afterwards so tend to stick with the status quo and what works for me. |

Wondered if it would be available at 00:01 in the first country with todays date, or when it reached today in the USA.
Id be open to get it today but would like to back-up first.
The new browser is reported as faster than chrome and internet explorer.
If I could partition my hard drive to dual boot, it would be great, but think it prevents that. Maybe a preview release plus my current 7 would be better, but it wouldn't be the full final release, just near final.
Once installed you can revert to your earlier version, if you don't like 10, as well as use 10 in the future. |

I know it makes me a hypocrite from my earlier post but you should consider moving to 7, it looks similar to vista but just runs so much better/faster.
You won't believe how much difference it makes. |

I use mine for business so no thanks.
Windows 10 may work fine but whether older versions of Office do, or printer drivers, or Tom Tom or anything else does is a different matter.
We have all been caught before on this. I will wait for six months.

So it's being rolled out in waves,
good thing as less chance of their servers or peer2peer network Overloading or bottlenecking and dropping mid install,
Right click the icon near clock and goto check update status, there is an option to alert you when ready
No doubt it will do anyway
No issue with processing the upgrade was conscious their servers could have a breakdown if everyone tried at once, but incrementally could work
Plus if P2p is still used the more that have it the quicker it should download |

Microsoft announced that it has automatic updates that cannot be overidden, conflicts with some graphic cards but they're hoping to iron out the creases, it's been dished out in waves over the day and if you're on Enterprise versions you have to wait until Aug 1st for the Enterprise upgrades |

Been using Windows 10 pro RTM for a couple of weeks now on a couple of machines, no problems at all. Activated from a pirated copies of 7, so now fully legal. In my view it's a idea mixture of 7 and 8. I hated 8. but 10 gets the thumbs-up from me.

I remember during the war we didn't have pc's, just abacusses. The only upgrade we got was what colour it was in, and top end one's were made of a new substance called "plastic" Like who give it's these names? Berty or harold would have sounds like music to my ears. |

To those of you still running XP - are you aware that Microsoft has stopped supporting it, and as such there will be no further security updates/patches. It's been left wide open to hackers to find more security flaws to exploit.
The general advice if you are still running XP is to NOT use it to go online.
There are dozens of useful articles online for advice on this! |

it'll download in the background and you can choose when/if to install it
My 8.1 lappy looks to be downloading it but the 3 W7 PC's aren't showing any signs so far. Guess they'll pick up when the relevant phase is turned on my M$
I'll likely wait a bit tho, would prefer to update the "test" ones first rather than risk the 2 I rely on being stable |

I've had it running in a VM since it was in a technical preview.
I'm not convinced yet. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop regarding subscription and 'OSaaS' - plus I don't like being forced to have certain updates automatically.
This is one of the worlds richest software companies giving away the latest major version of its flagship product for free - you don't get to have a turnover of billions by giving things away for free.

i've got two laptops, 1 is windows 8, upgraded to 8.1: the other is last ever apple macbook in white on snow leopard. personally, 'll get rid of windows 8.1, and stay with apple. it's safer on line, and theres no constant updates that want you to download with the virus's that are embeded in it. if you want to keep on using xp and vista, go ahead, but if you get virus's, and then post a thread about how to get rid of them, then don't come to me for sympathy. |

I believe that the new "updates" model is "Free for the life of the device". You will only pay for windows when you get a new computer.
This is in response to the Apple system where every device which will run it is always eligible for their latest OS for free.
The free upgrade offer however is only valid for a year, if you don't upgrade to windows ten within twelve months you'll have to buy it (if you want it).

Plus the free updates will most likely be security and critical updates only. |

"Oh the joys of being a mac user.
We can't all afford Apple stuff I will have you know.
If it's anything like the IPhones I'd rather not bother. "
Bad experience with them I take it? You get lemons with every consumer device.
On the whole Macs are about as trouble free (and maintenance free) as you can get. My job involves using them all day every day so need a tool that is ultra reliable, Windows wouldn't offer that to me.
Yes you pay more for them but you get more back come upgrade time meaning the second purchase is less daunting. |

You need to have Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or Windows 8.1 updates installed, before your system can be upgraded.
If you have
Windows 7 Professional
Windows 7 Ultimate
Windows 8.1 Pro
Windows 8.1 Pro for Students
then you get Windows 10 Pro. Other versions of 7 and 8.1 will get standard Windows 10 Home edition.
If you have Windows 7 Enterprise edition, it is not upgradable atm, I believe. |

Microsoft released the following a few weeks ago for 7 and 8 update KB3035583. If you can search online for that, in case your pc doesn't have it, then it should then allow you to run the get windows 10 app, once it's installed.
This Get Windows 10 App appears as white window icon in the system tray, on the bottom right of your screen.
When your pc is set-up to get Windows 10, it will then download the set-up files in the background, without further prompts from you. It won't install it, just download it ready. It will be a few GB in size, maybe 3 to 4GB, so ensure that you're not on a limited bandwidth broadband connection, where it would eat up all of your bandwidth allowance.

If you want to update - but don't want the wait for your invite - there is away around it - the Microsoft media creation tool (which was designed to let you burn a hard copy of windows 10 to a DVD) will actually let you start the upgrade process without waiting. Go to Microsoft main site and search for media creation tool and it is under general information under window 10.
As long as all updates are in place and you follow the instructions should work ok. Having now upgraded a few machines to win 10' this way today seems a good work around. And so far windows 10 is faster then 7, stable and (touch wood) no major bugs!! |

Are you on a HP PC? It's taken me 2 weeks of stress and editing the registry and all sorts of other tricks, to find out that if your HP laptop came with windows already on it, HP will be dealing with your upgrade - NOT MICROSOFT.
(I got the same message as you, that my version of Windows wasn't eligible - running 8.1)
Currently doing ALL the HP updates I can find to see if it solves it. |

so I updated a couple of my PC's, so far it works ok and stable. Chrome set to be default browser and works fine for me, turned off cortana and any browser/bing feedback to microshaft, one-drive etc. No great issues yet, Kodi & vlc will do to replace MCE etc.
Only bugbears so far are:
clickpad scroll direction reversed back to how it was when new, 2-finger scrolling, up to move down the page (how intuitive, not). Can change it but it reverts on reboot even if I force the registry setting, grrr. So Synaptics integration is flakey still, as reported in the tech preview stages.
Some apps cannot uninstall via the new settings menu, have to run up the old control panel to remove them.
Seems to have loaded updates already but so far it seems stable enough. I guess some who can't upgrade may be stuck till component manufacturers release compatible drivers and other issues will resolve likewise. |

It is refusing to install IE11 which is a requirement for the get 10 ap... Desktop system is windows 7 professional. In the first is a speech bubble saying 'Hi. My name is Bill Gates and today I'm going to teach you how to count to ten'
In the second, the speech bubble says '1, 2, 3, 95, 98, NT, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10'

well after a bit of messing with the winwoes registry, I finally found a fix for the scrolling direction, edited the registry and its retained it through reboot. Posted the fix onto superuser in case it helps anyone else
Does seem that some settings via control panel etc don't write correctly away to the registry and get replaced when the config program exits or system reboots, annoying but driver updates will hopefully sort, eventually |

Is it also the case that W10 uses your own bandwidth on a peer to peer basis to distribute future uploads.
Whilst it can be turned off many won't realise and will be doing more than their share of "uploading".

"an interesting post from the guardian about your privacy whilst using windows 10
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/jul/31/windows-10-microsoft-faces-criticism-over-privacy-default-settings"
I'm not so bothered about this as long as they don't sell my bank details to some oik to nick my money. We have ads in our lives everywhere. They make watching some television free. They pop up on sides of buses and near to shops. The advertisers need to target their ads to suit me, I have no problem with that. Cookies on our PCs already spy on us. I gave permission for Microsoft to gather my data to make my experiences better. Sometimes it works, sometimes it's annoying having the same hotel ad pop up everywhere. I only Googled it to show someone else. We want things to work better, they can't do that without our feed back or help. |

7 is famous as being more loved than 8. 10 should allow the same hardware to be more efficient and responsive than either of them. It's also got much higher levels of security built into it than any earlier versions.
10 is closer to 7 than 8, in its overall look and feel imo. And you can revert back, if it's not what you like. |

"I've tried IE which worked fine before, but now doesn't
And they push you to use "E" with windows 10
That crashes also doe me(I would say I'm on a laptop of 5yrs) but seems strange it decides to play up the day I did the download.
Who knows "
Worth trying Firefox - decent browser.
Dunno if E is any good, but I ditched IE a long time ago |

"so I updated a couple of my PC's, so far it works ok and stable.
I guess some who can't upgrade may be stuck till component manufacturers release compatible drivers and other issues will resolve likewise.
well after a bit of messing with the winwoes registry, I finally found a fix for the scrolling direction, edited the registry and its retained it through reboot. Posted the fix onto superuser in case it helps anyone else
Does seem that some settings via control panel etc don't write correctly away to the registry and get replaced when the config program exits or system reboots, annoying but driver updates will hopefully sort, eventually
My 2 finger scrolling and zoom doesn't work at all now. I had a look at a fix but it hasn't worked."
is yours using the synaptics driver?
and does the settings tab allow you to change it and turn it on so it works?
I did see a fix to turn 2finger scrolling back on in the registry somewhere online as it came up in the earlier pre-release as an issue. For me it worked but was arse-upward like MAC's do it. |

maybe try this, if you haven't already:
Open Registry Editor (Windows + R, type regedit and hit Enter) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh Create a new DWORD called UseScrollCursor with a value of 0. Logoff or Restart That’s all! (snagged off the superuser site) |

You forgot about the bit where you have to be administrator to run reg edit,
But fairly easy to work round, just run command prompt as administrator( right click usually gives the option) |

shouldn't do as that section only applies to the touchpad, you can always edit the name after too or delete it if it makes no difference |

I was intrigued to read the message about a PC with 1Gb running fast with Windows 10 - I have a 6Gb memory machine and so far very much slower than W7, fair few website crashes, but I'm going to persevere with it - maybe try some of the registry tuning suggested. But definitely not the 'turnkey' solution that Microsoft (love the 'Microshaft' comment above!) promised...what's new, eh? |

I installed it on Friday but if I have any more problems with it I will revert back to Windows 7 tomorrow.
Laptop keeps freezing, sites freeze, takes a lot longer to load on start up, this morning refused to access my router, Paint and other accessoriesI cannot find, just seems like it's a run up to having to buy things form Microsoft.
Yesterday it twice took 15, yes 15! minutes to close down.
Using search you have to "Search the web and Windows" why for heavens sake I just want to find a file on my laptop!

To change this, click on the search box/icon, then on the 3 parallel lines (they call it a "hamburger" - denotes "more options"), click on settings and turn off the bits you don't want in there.
15 seconds, done. |

After you have done that can you come and do it to mine? I haven't pressed the icon that keeps popping up yet. I'm a scared Luddite.
If you've got time could you find out why my car keeps telling me that "Tyre Learning is Active" and how to make it park itself? Thanks.

Just press the button and upgrade - it does everything itself pretty much.
RE: Tyre Learning is Active - from the interwebz
"Your vehicle has special sensors on the tire which the call TPMS ( Tire Pressure Monitor System) and on some vehicles if the tires have been taken off for any reason such as a tire repair, tire rotation, or even putting new tires on. On some vehicles there's a learning program that needs to be done so the computer knows where each sensor is and what the pressure is. So in your case you may want to check your cars manual to find out how to reset the learning process. Some vehicles you will need to drive around and it will learn that way (light will go out), and some can only be learned through a process of using a special scan tool. "
RTFM. |

It's a new car (well, 5 months old). I expected it to have learned by now.
As to "it does everything itself pretty much" it's the "pretty much" I'm scared about. I don't like change on my computer.

What I mean is you only have a few options to pick and you just let it get on with it for 15 minutes or so.
But yeah, I'm with you on the change thing - it's just good to have something new now and then. |

Yes it's free if you run windows 7 8 and 8.1. BUT you must activate it within one year to be free.

Yeah but if your using a PAYG dongle it will eat your data allowance so quickly you'll probably run out of data long before it's even loaded to your device......

Agree with Soxy - download where it's free for you, or won't bust your data limit.
It could download for you, in the background - before asking for permission to install. Prevent this, if you need to. |

It asked me to 'reserve a copy', then 'download', then 'install'. That bit was ok. When the screen went to the big circle on the grey background saying that it would restart several times and I should sit back and relax... pah! Hours and it wasn't relaxing.

I don't know how to do any of those things.

I tried to look at a group of pictures but I clicked on something that sent it searching for ALL pictures. I'm not going back there. |

normally the share button is for a folder to share with other systems within the house or within the the set up of your network
but windows 10 says this
"Installed apps that enable sharing will work with this button; it will open the share experience just like in Windows 8.1 when the Share charm is used. For example – you can select a few photos directly in File Explorer, press the share button, and share directly to Facebook or Twitter if you have these apps installed."
for slideshow
To stop playing the slide show, press ESC or right-click the slide show as it plays, and then click Exit.

"Windows 10 which pulls images from the users default pictures gallery and plays them in a loop on the screen
The feature can easily be turned off, with a simple right click and press of ‘turn live tile off’"

for those that have copied games for other systems
"Sometimes you’ll need software updates to keep using the Services. We may automatically check your version of the software and download software updates or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices."
and you cannot play some of the old games now
as any game that had securom or drm on there cd/dvd
On the other hand, this means so many older games now just won’t work on Windows 10 – Retail versions of games such as The Sims, Crysis, Mass Effect, BioShock, Grand Theft Auto IV and more use SecuROM. They’ll probably just become unplayable now. |

That happens with other types of media. When a console is upgraded you either have to buy the new software or go online to upgrade the old one. |
