Put water, margarine, sugar and fruit into a pan, bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Cool. Add egg and stir in flour and spices. Place mixture into an 20cm/8" prepared tin and bake in a very moderate oven 150C/300F/Gas mark 2/3) for about one hour. This, so far as I remember, was the only fruit cake my Mum ever baked and her Mother gave her the recipe. It is quick and easy. I sometimes replace the water with cold tea (strained of course...)

"I fancy a bit of fruit cake"

I'm a bit of a fruitcake sometimes...

And you just can't beat a bit of fruitcake...

There are only two types of people in the world...

...those that like olives and those that don't.

My mother, now gone, always made this and it was a family favourite

Think it's in the BeRo book circa 1960's

I have a copy of that in amongst my cook books... it's truly epic!

My nan had one of those. It was stained and pages barely held together. She got a new one so I took the old one. The best coconut tarts and scones in the world. All the recipes are on the BERo website. That's my plans for tomorrow

I've got the 70's edition and one that's about 5 years old. The old imperial recipes are the best.

Fruit pastilles. I'm tucked up in bed with a packet and have just put a black one on the bedside table just in case the last one is yellow or green - anyone else do that?

I defrosted what I thought were salmon fish cakes for my dinner tonight.

Turns out they are quinoa and chickpea from when I was going through a veggie stage.

I'm missing protein.

But they're full of protein!

Seafood pasta here with king prawns, crab, clams, squid and homegrown grape tomatoes

Brazil nuts are the only nuts which taint semen. Be aware, nut allergy sufferers!

I have an awesome gingerbread recipe from Victorian times that's made with Blackstrap molasses and boiling water.

It's so wonderfully sticky after a couple of days, like malt loaf.

I know technically they are full of protein. But I only feel like I've eaten protein if I had to chew it!!
