I like this. When I were a kid everyone at my school apart from 1 lad was white and spoke Mansfield's own variety of English. I think if we'd had more variety I'd now be spending a lot less time bouncing ex school friends off my facebook for sharing Britain First crap.

You've got the wrong end of the stick - I referred to a Britain First, a rather unsavoury bunch of racists on facebook who piggy back onto issues of the day in an attempt to get likes and shares.

What always bemuses me is that we then bemoan that our young people are not fluent in other languages.

I understand, and see first hand, the problems in meeting the targets with young children who aren't fluent in English. I think more can be done to build on their bi-lingual abilities and make them tri-lingual. Those I have seen who are encouraged in their mother tongue (usually through supplementary schools) AND supported in their English generally get good attainment levels.

There was an interesting programme on See Hear about language acquistion in the deaf community.

Yes, for some, but the schools don't enter them as it would be for small numbers. Some supplementary schools do.
