Concrete & a huge amount of architecture
The basis of a legal system
Our alphabet
About half of our language
A massive cannon of art and literature
An idea of unity

They weren't that clever!.. They pretty much stole all their ideas from Greeks and then sacked the place and set the world back for the next 1800 years after trashing the Greek advances!
Still at least they inspired the Germans |

I don't know it would depend what you class as reinforcement.
Prestressed steel reinforces concrete was obviously an in possibility without major hydraulic equipment but they may have used some form of composites with materials.

No - Roman concrete was not reinforced - they did not have the technology.
They used a light, quick-setting mixture of volcanic stone (turfa) and quicklime - a bit like Portland cement. |

Define "reinforcement " as corse weave hessian is a great material for reinforceing and shaping decorative plaster and and concrete works along with wire.
After all people reinforce mud and shit with hay it's not a highly technical practice for low stress members

"The Babylonians used to ask "what did the Symirians do for us".
The Eygptians asked "What did the Babylonians do for us".
The Persians asked "What did the Eygptians do for us".
The Greeks asked "what did the Persians do for us"
The Romans asked "what the fuck" and stole the lot and in the end gave us this post in this forum."
And the Greeks are now asking, wtf have you German and other EU bastards done to us?

"Concrete the foundation of the modern world.
The ability to have something that can set and harden when wet or even completely underwater was a major turning point allowing the creation of artifical harbours and ports which helped them spread so well compared to others
Just out of curiousity, did they get around to inventing re-inforced concrete. I'm guessing not.
I don't know it would depend what you class as reinforcement.
Prestressed steel reinforces concrete was obviously an in possibility without major hydraulic equipment but they may have used some form of composites with materials.
Regular iron wouldn't be much use.
Was thinking of modern high tensile steel rebar but yours is good enough, reinforced it was then. "
We reinforce with lots of different things. The basic re bar you see is the crudest form.
Much more preferential is rods that are hydraulically stretched (elasticaly ) as the concrete is poured and set then when the tension is relaxed they force the concrete into compression massively increasing its load bearing qualities when in beams etc.
We also reinforce with plastics and now we're staring external reinforcement with carbon fibre and epoxies. If you ever see an old concrete bridge with lots of black stripes ion it's underside (like giant strips of duct tape) they're reteofit carbon fibre reinforcement. |

130+ comments and no-one mentions roman law- basis of most European legal systems.
They also pretty much created the modern city.
Romantic languages- eg French,Italian.
Spanish.
Shame about the men in sandals thing though |

"Concrete & a huge amount of architecture
The basis of a legal system
Our alphabet
About half of our language
A massive cannon of art and literature
An idea of unity
Against that:-
The Catholic Church"
