So I see that the BBC have had to apologise for a sexist remark made by Peter Allis during the Open Golf yesterday.
The camera focussed on Zach Johnsons wife as he was about to putt for the title and Allis said "She is probably thinking 'if this goes in I get a new kitchen'"
Apparently this caused outrage on Twitter forcing the Beeb to apologise for the 'inappropriate' comment.
In today's day and age yes, the comments do seem outdated, but we're they really bad enough to cause a widespread moral outrage?
Are people these days just waiting to spout on about how offended they are as soon as anyone makes an ill-advised comment?
Or are the complaints justified and the likes of 84 year old Allis are examples of misogynistic dinosaurs who should have no place in today's modern media?

Probably Daily Mail readers getting uptight again. People seem to get so easily offended over trivial crap nowadays. Ok so it was mildly mysogonistic but hardly enough to cause outcry. |

I know what you mean, it does seem like an over the top reaction, but I agree with it. He wouldn't have said it about a man, because in his world men are men and women live in the kitchen. |

"A comment was made, some didn't like it, so they apologised? Dunno if this counts as "PC GONE MAD".

I guess the thread title was a question more aimed at those that complained, not the apology itself which, I agree, was good PR and timely for anyone who was offended |

It looks like Auntie has decided it's quicker and easier just to get an apology out and get the whole thing forgotten about.
Only those with little else to occupy the space where most folk have a brain will notice or care. |

This is the new brand of crime though, applies to a whole b_nch of things.
Not what you say or do, specifically- but how someone feels about what you said/did.
Courtesy of labour sometime around 2000.
Racist/sexist remarks are most obvious examples, others might be 'threatening behaviour' |

Of all the things in the world to be on high alert for, you would think flippant comments that may offend three people and generate a band wagon big enough for everyone would be waaaayyyyy down the list. |

t's an outdated sexist, misogynistic remark.
I am not offended by it. How can I be?
I know how rhetoric gusts swiftly through corridors , actions gambol swiftly behind but beliefs are slower than sloths on tramadol to change.
We are still a very patriarchal society and whilst I couldn't possibly be offended by Peter Allis - him being who he is, harmful remarks must not go _nchecked.
Sadly he _iewed her as a woman and as we all know the stereotypical woman wants a kitchen and it will be paid for NOT by her but by a man who is supporting her. |

Why the heck is the comment re kitchens outdated? Woman are still by far and away the biggest drivers of getting new kitchens.
The BBC's only comment, to the social media complainers, should have been "Get real".
And peeps wonder why people with "mental health" issues are on the up. Or downers as may be.

If you truly felt it harmless and funny you wouldn't feel the need to insult those that don't.
Insults are usually the last resort or the only resort for those who can't support their own arguments.
So far people just keep shouting 'madness' as if saying over and over and over makes it right.

You need to have it explained?
Because if some people have absolutely nothing better to do than to consistently go onto such as Twitter or Facebook to whinge and complain about trivial meaningless stuff then make no wonder their own mental health isn't very good.
Some would appear to have it run their lives and get awfully upset, distressed, disturbed when things are sorted to their liking.
eg how often do you hear of youngish folks committing suicide after having spent yonks on social media and yet not liking the posts they receive? Quite a few.
See any connection yet? |

Seriously?
Because teenagers being bullied on socail media is exactly the same as people using twitter to complain about a misogynistic old man making inappropriate comments on the BBC
So I repeat my question, in the context of your original post what on earth has mental health got to do with anything?

Another quality quote from Fry I could not agree more!
Oddly as a golfer I'm not a massive fan of Peter Alice, find his musings a bit tiresome on occasion. But if people really are offended by that they should have their TV taken off them. Light hearted comment about the huge sum of money they were about to win, no doubt if were female golfer and husband it would have been a car. Is that sexist? Not to me, there are maybe a touch of stereotyping for mild amusement no more. Men and women are equal BUT we are not the same and it's fine to acknowledge the difference imho

I remember what words were popular and not deemed offensive as i was growing up (am 42) and many of them were offensive, especially to black people, asians, and women.
Don't see why being PC is a bad thing? I sure wouldn't like to hear half the offensive stuff that used to be said, even in 'jest'.

You have just made my point by inferring that What he said is so extreme as to link it to racism and homophobia. And as we know from history if you get enough people to believe that what he said was so extreme by of course inferring so. Then the next course of action is in the end extreme punishment for what was neither extreme nor caused much fuss to anyone. Socialists be it left or right wing have both used this tactic to quite descent to their policies and to spread fear of free speech in the populis. The over all effect is pretty much the same you have to become more and more extreme to keep the spin going. And you have just as I said proved my point... |

When I got a pay rise, my wife's first comment was "oh good, I can have a new kitchen now".
Wait till she wakes up, I'll be telling her how disgusting I think she is for making such a sexist comment.

I can't understand how it can be offensive. He works 6/7 days a week as a professional golfer, if she can spend all day from Thursday - Sunday walking around the golf course then she obviously doesn't have a paying job.
So wouldn't that make her the home maker? I would certainly conclude that, and one of the specifics would be to have a kitchen in good working order? With easy to wipe down surfaces.

I complained in the strongest terms. I found the time in the day to e mail the BEEB and made my thoughts known on what is clearly an attack on the moral fabric of the country. With £1.1m of prize money it should have been a kitchen and a bathroom at least? |

Did anyone see that BBC article about the Texan sherif whom tried to give a black women a ticket?! If I spoke to a police officer like that Id expect to get arrested, right?! Another thing regarding this spate of high profile US custody killings, is it me but a large proportion of the African Americans whom have died have or were committing a crime. Is it politically incorrect to stay that maybe just maybe if they hadn't committed a crime they may not have been arrested and or felt the need to resist arrest which rightly or wrongly led to there Demise. Surely the real issue is not racism but the disproportionate amount of crime committed by certain groups in the U.S. And UK? |

True. I'd take issue with any comment that equates golf with any (perhaps publicly outmoded/unfashionable but not strictly misogynistic) definition of masculinity..
Yes,I'm prodding with a stick, just to see who wakes up and, yes,I DO have a great deal of experience of the aforementioned game.

what 'crime' was the young boy committing, think he was 8 or 9 when shot dead..
or the guy running away, shot in the back..
or the guy choked, clearly saying 'i can't breathe'..
i think all the above are on the web as they were filmed by a witness..
each case on its merits and not seen the lady in Texas one you refer to so can't comment on that..
the levels of crime committed argument and by whom etc is a different discussion..

Sorry,I know this kind of thing is seemingly unresolvable, never-ending, but I coupfnt let this go. OP of above quote: just for starters, try looking for more information, and finding answers to your questions. With specific regard to the above, you could start by watching "The House I Live In",a very interesting,if disheartening documentary that, amongst other things, contains some very interesting numbers on the breakdown, into racial groupings,of lower-level and drug-related crimes and WHY IT MIGHT BE SO.
No points for anyone guessing first.. |

'Political Correctness' covers many things and means different things to different people. I've known quite a few people who regard themselves as straight talking keep it real tell it as it is types. Most of them have been opinionated arseholes who don't mind offending folk. Few had many friends after prolonged close contact with people.
Now can we all go back to agreeing that Katie Hopkins is a total arse? |

I am going bald, am a farmer and a mason people take the piss out of all or any of them at times, do I get offended? No I laugh because they are joking and having fun at my expense, I have broad shoulders and can and do return the banter, strangely as an intelligent adult I can tell the difference between a funny comment aimed at me or anyone else and an insult made towards me or someone else, they are two very different things and something the PC brigade dont appear to understand |

I wouldn't. I'd go further and tell her she is a self serving, arrogant arsehole that looks like a very _nconvincing transvestite. I couldn't give a shit if she's hurt by my comments. She's quite capable of dealing out her own waspish criticisms of others. I don't get offended on behalf of other people, that way madness lies. |

When objections were raised about an expression used on the B.B.C about one of it's employees using language considered sexist it is possible that they were justified as sexism isn't really favourable in society right now.
If someone in a swingers forum says Katie Hopkins is an arse hole then they have acted independently and not been remotely sexist, racist , ageist or anything other than Katie Hopkinist.
So no. I don't think she's owed an apology.
On the other hand, if she has a profile here and has read this and shown her fammily and they are all horrified that she has been called an arsehole we still haven't been sexist in front of millions or even in private. Or racist or ageist or anything other than Katy Hopkinist.
So no I won't apologise.
And my boss wont be giving me a warning either.

No. I'm relying on the defence of fair comment, with her twitter feed as evidence to back that up, plus the fact that she seems to go out of her way to cause offence and so should expect others to have colourful _iews of her. |

So a comment made about one lady who may or may not be more than happy to have a new kitchen can be seen as offensive and sexist to anyone who cares to be offended by it but a personal insult and derogatory comment made about another lady is deemed to be ok because some may agree with you, I am sure KH and her family and friends certainly wouldnt be happy about your remark, I bet if you asked both ladies about the comments made about them it would be KH who would be more offended. You are quite entitled to have a opinion of KH but that is not the point |

Funny how its nearly always straight white men who are so quick to dismiss offence.
We live in a society and a world still packed with prejudice. I, and most straight white men, don't know what it's like to be a victim of that, so I won't tell other people what they can or cannot object to. |

"So I see that the BBC have had to apologise for a sexist remark made by Peter Allis during the Open Golf yesterday.
''ill- advised??!?!?!? ... are you seriously saying all ill people require advice?!...this is an outrage there is a line and you just jumped over it... my solicitors will be in touch ''
;)

Maybe because we are the only ones left that jokes can be told about or cant suffer discrimination so we have to put up with any old shit and just get on with it instead of being so precious |

"Progressive liberals, or as we used to know them " radical socialists " . Use these terms such as political correctness and many others to slowly force their agenda from the shadows... Just a bit more cunningly than their communist/fascist hero's did in the past. Because as we have learnt and these scum haven't SOCIALISM has not and will not ever work no matter how they spin it as history shows it gets ever and ever more extreme until as it always ends with he deaths of millions....
so to challenge racism, homophobia and bigotry will lead to mass murder..?
interesting..
though most probably total and utter bollocks..
And you have just as I said proved my point...
read it again what i actually said in response to your post..
your post has nothing to do with what was said by Allis and which i think the phrase storm in a tea cup fits ..
its a none event..
that you have made a link by imagining that i have inferred anything linking his comment is not borne out by the above, clearly..
my comment to you is plain and simply put, its nothing to do with what was said by a commentator..
for some 'PC' is to challenge discrimination and something to be feared probably because they are the type of people that are incapable or unwilling to keep their vile language locked inside their heads..
in any case its a made up term by the same type of people who want a stick to bash those who disagree with the bigotry etc they spout..
that you chose to label others as 'scum' says a lot about you..
I was in fact calling both the Nazi party and the communist politburo and there supporters SCUM... Who all happened to be Socialists. My point is that the wanting and looking to be offended brigade are in fact using a well tried and tested practice which in fact was and still is used by what is now called the progressive liberal left. All explained nicely in what used to be called The business of propaganda, now known as the art of P.R. (Post 1940s) by Mr E.L.J. Burnays. Please feel free to read."
so today's progressive liberals were 'radical socialists' and as such are the same as the Nazi's and Stalin..?
you do spout some drivel..
no ta on the recommendation, may i counter recommend 'speaking plain English' or even the witch sketch from the holy grail as your logic is similar.. |
