He is let's say an unusual guy. I get the opinion he has been manipulated by many people throughout his life though. Is he a sinner? i don't know. I don't really think he is a saint but he isn't the cleverest spoon in the draw. |

"so as not to glorify a rapist ....have u a problem with that ??"
Has he not served his time? do you think it is correct to castigate someone to the grave?
The thread is not glorifying anyone it is passing comment on someone who has had a troubled life. Yes he was convicted but after the jurors sat for 10 hours and only by a slim majority. The woman who accused him had a history of similar accusations on other men as well.
So do you have a problem in someone saying that the man has served his time for something he was convicted for?

As a woman and mother of daughter's not for one nano second would I defend a rapist. However I remember at the time, I and my friends not being convinced of his guilt.
He was, and is not, the sharpest tool in the box and has been manipulated by others namely his ex-wife Robyn and her mother.
I recognise this is an emotive subject and some male posters will see it as defending women a la Sir Galahad, but people should be allowed to express an opinion. Disagree as you wish, but if everyone expressed distaste for post, the forums would close as I'm offended by something I read on the forums every day.
It's not hard keeping things in perspective: my opinion of course! |

mike tyson was paid to do a job.
he did that job.
he may have done wrongs in his life.
are we to judge after a judge has served a sentence to him.
yet again in this life you only have to shag one goat. |

I have a huge amount of respect for what Mike Tyson has achieved in his life and the incredible challenges he overcame to become one of the iconic figures of the 20th Century. He is one of the few sportsmen who's aura transcended his sport.
He has lived a life of amazing highs and tragic lows.
I don't accept that he is some dumb boxer with no intelligence, you only have to listen to him in conversation to realise he's actually quite sharp in many respects. I'm not in the camp of making excuses for him based on his intelligence.
If I had the chance to meet him I'd jump at it. If I had the chance to have a drink with him, even better. If I had the opportunity to be his friend I'd decline it, why? because I don't like him, I don't like some of his values, I don't like many of the distasteful things he has done, I am disgusted by certain aspects of his personality.
An incredible guy, an amazing life, a great story, I commend the mods for not closing this thread, we should be able to discuss this type of topic in a balanced way. |

He was a talented man in the ring but a fool out of it. He wasn't the most intelligent man and the millions he won was manipulated out of him but others. As a boxer he was class and that's what i look at in 2010 |

"the c**t was sentenced to 9 years for rape...end this post please "
since mr tyson served his sentance there have been what you might call developements
there have been many many footballers and celebraties that have been accused of rape , in almost ALL instances it has been proved to be false allegations made by some "bimbo" that was out to get either celebrity status or compensation
if mike tysons rape case was to materiallise today i doubt it would end in a conviction , and it would prabably end up being shown to be false
he remains a person i have a high respect for and hold in high esteem
and i believe him when he says he was falsely accused |

A true Mike Tyson story....
This from a few years ago when he was at his peak.
He was invited to a party in New York by the ( now dead) artist Andy Warhol.
Warhol liked to invite a wide mix of famous people mixing sportsmen with artists, businessmen, academics, musicians actors and so on.
One of the other guest was the model Naomi Campbell.
Tyson was pestering her, she did not like it.
A third guest saw this happening.
This man was Professor Sir Alfred Ayer.
Ayer was then 96 years old and dressed, looked and sounded, like someone straight from Britain in the 1930s.
Ayer marched over to Tyson and Campbell.
He said " excuse me intruding miss, but is this man bothering you?"
And then to Tyson he said:
"sir, a gentleman should respect a lady's wishes and if this lady does not want your attentions I would ask you to leave her alone"
Tyson glares down at Ayer who is 5ft 4 and about 9 stone and, as we said, 96.
" I'm the heavyweight champion of the world... Who the fuck are YOU?"
Ayer glares straight back into Tyson's eyes and replies...
" I am Professor Sir Alfred Ayer, regarded as world's greatest living philosopher WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU?"

Thank you for all the comments and grea to read I also dont think he was guilty just very naive he started boxing as away of getting at the bullies and make a better life for himself the way he talked about his manager someone who actually believed in him bought tears to my eyes. He was a grea fighter who had, had a tough life. And after sleeping on it I will not be bullied into closing a thread. |

I think Tyson was a fantastic, if somewhat reactionary, boxer who unfortunately fell victim to Don King, his ex wife, her mother and also to the alleged rape victim Desiree Washington.
I say alleged because since the trial and conviction new evidence has come to light.
Such as a female relative of Washingtons who was frightened to give testimony in Tysons favour in the naive belief that it would cost her recently acquired beauty contest crown.
Also 3 eye witnesses who weren't permitted to take the stand.
She went back,at around 2AM, to the hotel room of a notorious lothario early in the morning and had sex with him.
Then when he asked his body guard to take her down to a taxi, instead of doing it himself, she cut up rough and saw an easy way to get a fortune.
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, especially a gold digger! R

there was a case in the press the other day about a young woman who lied about beeing raped, she got 12 months.
i know rape is a horrible thing, but up till now the man has always been guilty till proved inocent, and i know a guy who was victim of this, it ruined his life, and in the end it turned out she cried rape because she thought her friends might think her a "slapper"
this has been going on for a long time and finaly the men accused are getting a say.
like i said i dont condone rape, bt it has been a get out clause for some women for a long time.
men arent always guilty and should be treated thus......
except when my good lady says ive done something wrong then im always guilty |

Well if he did or did not do things he paid for it anyway. I would rather comment on the guys ability in the ring and to some extent on how he was managed or mismanaged.
He was a slugger but also an accomplished boxer too. Is he the best there has been? Well i would thing he would have a 50/50 chance against anyone even Ali. I have a sneaky suspicion he would have battered Ali with his strength too. Just a shame he has been unable to have a happy private life. |

Check out Jack Dempsey against Luis Firpo if you want to see brutality in the ring. It's probably on youtube. It shows Dempsey at his peak, against another feared slugger of the day. Tyson modeled his style on Dempsey, but I reckon Jack would have beaten him, had he been the same size physically. Back then, in the depression there were desperate men fighting for more than prizemoney |

But dont you think that many boxers not just tyson have a very unhappy/unsettled private life what with frank bruno and the years of depression same as chris eubank and many others having read many bios now going to be controversial I love boxing but should it be banned. Ali and all the other greats who suffered brain damage. |

Dempsey was a class act but Tyson was something else. I had the privilege of watching him towards the end of his career and he was still imminence. The neck on the bloke was something else.

Many go into boxing as a form of escapism from life. I boxed in the marines and some of the other fighters were real nut jobs. Your probably right about all those punches affecting you too. I don't think it should be banned though. People still need choices of what they do or that's the way i see it. |

To be honest I think both Bruno and Tyson had 'problems' long before either of them took a punch. |

can I also add to the mike tyson debate a bit....
that he was two different people... the person that he was before he went to jail and found "god"...
and the person that he was after.....
would it be fair to say he was taken advantage of...
by don king...
by all the hangers on, agents and accountants....
by "certain" women....
absolutely!!! they all bled the cash cow dry..
when he came out... he had to start again.. he was a lot more reflective,
he is a completely different person now... and he has grown as an individualy

well the member who cries rape and stop the posts is clearly unable to see through the good old american judgement system , we believe mike tyson was innocent and it was a set up ...we also believe that o j simpson was guilty of murder..the whole world knew and he was found not guilty,
micheal jackson was not convicted by an american court as he payed a young boy 30 million dollars for no apparent reason not to testify against him in court.
we wont be allowed to debate moonwalking or touchdowns if our threads are at all linked to the american judicial system in any way |

You cannot dissociate the man from his actions.

Nobody in this thread has tried to dissociate the man from his actions'. (I do accept some have questioned the validity of his guilt).
You seem to be attempting to turn this thread into a discussion about rape, it is not, it is about Mike Tyson.
You may want to concentrate on the disputed actions of an hour or so of this guys life and ignore the other 40 years, but others prefer not to.
If you want to debate rape I would be happy to do that in another thread, but you will probably find no debate as everyone would probably have the same stance.

That'd be Mike Tyson convicted rapist and ex-boxer.
Where do we draw the line? Supposing the "disputed actions of an hour" had brought about an undisputed conviction for child rape or child murder?
Do we ignore that and concentrate on his boxing and kitchen equipment?

That's exactly where your argument, in my opinion, is flawed. We DONT draw the line. Non of us on this forum are committing any crime by discussing and debating ANY topic as long as site rules are respected. Why do you want to draw the line?
You keep trying to play the emotive card and now you want us to jump into the 'realms of supposing' by upping the anti (child rape or child murder!......
Let me be clear, I am happy to discuss ANY subject matter. I'm not trying to censor you, and will resist any form of censorship by you.
In answer to your question I'm not asking you to ignore any part of the Tyson story. |

"actually cheryl ty was cleared of racially aggravated assault but found guilty of assault with abh. so can we just call her 'woman beater'?"
no one said it was a racial crime if you look back. Fab said black woman which she was. Now if he was going to be more specific he could have said fat black woman. Which she was also, now me stating this does not make me fattist just statesman a fact.
And how ever you butter it sweet as candy Cheryl still attacked someone. The media has a large part in how people are portrayed to the general public alas. |

hmm i agree that she was guilty. what i'm not sure of is if the woman's colour was relevant to the post.
she wasn't guilty of a racial crime
therefore the woman's colour isn't relevant
neither is the colour of the accused in the case of a non-racial crime

that is why I quoted it exactly the way i did.....
Factually I was correct..... the person who she assulted was black.... therefore she is technically "a beater of black women"......
I never at any point said it was racial..
so....Sounds really bad doesn't it..... see how everything can be twisted to make a statement.... |
