I don't read books that often, on holidays mainly.

I read whilst away recently which I was I got really into. Started reading another one and I just can't seem to get interested in this one.

Do I carry on reading or give up?

What do you do?

I've tried reading a lot of the booker list, orange award etc. And they're just not for me.

Think I've picked up The Life of Pi three times only to put it down

Plenty more fish in the sea...

Perhaps go back to it at a later point...

In the meantime, pick up something else that takes your fancy....

If it doesn't interest you, don't force yourself, figure out what you liked about the book before and then google away until you find a book that's got just that.

Books make you smart and smarts make you sexy

I'd give up. Sometimes on holiday, you are in different mindset. I tend to borrow holiday reads from friends, as we all buy at least one and then can swap them between ourselves. Doesn't cost anything then either.

I have Go Set a Watchmen to read now though, so I hope it is as good as I want it to be.

Sometimes an author will have one great book, but the others are never quite to the same level.

I'm an avid reader and hate to give up on a book so there are few that I have not persevered with. I even forced myself to finish 50 shades which was truly awful...

Seeing as you are not normally much of a reader, I would recommend you give up if you still can't get into it by the end of chapter 1.

Maybe try something along the same lines by another author.

The Town by The Cross

If you were eating a meal you wouldn't finish it.

If you were looking at art you wouldn't keep looking.

There is too much pomp around book reading.

If you don't like it. Leave it. You've missed nothing except the pain and boredom of trying to do something you don't like.

Use second hand book shops or read friends books......

When this happens to me I start another book but keep the one I can't get into and set a target of five pages a night....sometimes ten. If after a week I'm still not into it I give up. Some books are slow burners and you might miss out by not sticking with them while others just aren't suitable for you and you shouldn't feel bad about abandoning them

Iv shared your pain in the past, I have been an avid reader since I was 5 years old and always had a book in my hands. About 2 years ago I just couldn't get though a book at all. So I picked up an old favorite ( the silmarillion ) and it brought back my passion for reading.

Maybe try a book you've really enjoyed in the past?

I often have two or three on the go if one is getting a little heavy. Technically I don't like to be beaten by an inanimate object, though "In Search of Lost Time" wtf?

I also gave up reading "Lord of the Rings" to the kids after I realised that whilst we could technically finish it, we had more fun with the Faraway Tree and Usbournes Farm Tales.

Yes, I too think you need to find yourself a new book "

This is why I don't read anymore. I like to fully get into a book and don't like being interrupted. That never happens .. i just don't have the time. A couple of pages here and there doesn't do it for me. Maybe when I retire and have the time I'll start reading again.

This thread started five days ago. You've managed a couple more pages in the past five days?! You are holding the book the right way up aren't you?!

Very true. It can be hard to find that good chunk of free time when you can just read, in peace and quiet without and interruptions. I try and make the time but it can be difficult. It's no good to just read a page or two here and there. I love just being able to immerse myself in a good book.

Glenrothes

I love books and have an extensive collection to prove it, but the kindle gives me instant access. Probably not good really lol. I love Diana Gabaldon, Outlander series, J R Ward, vampire books with twists lol, Tolkien, Martin, lots of historical romance and real war time stories. Never got past chapter one of grey as it's so badly written. I could read all day and night. Kindles make bed time reading easier too.

Now, it's just tedious.

Yeah - i think you do!

I wouldn't know a good book if it hit me in the face MPB "

I read three thrillers on holiday, each one was a real page turner. I'm starting to appreciate the different writing styles that different authors have when dealing with a similar subject. Stuck with the last one though and I think I'm hooked on reading again

I highly recommend the Millennium Trilogy of books, otherwise known as The girl with the dragon tattoo, the girl who played with fire and the girl who kicked a hornet's nest. Honestly the best books I've ever read. Epic.
