During my drive to work one morning the topic of discussion on radio Oxford was about disabled places on buses.
it seems some mums were taking up the spaces for their buggies. They're saying trying to carry shopping plus a toddler with a buggy is too much to try and fold so they use the spaces thereby leaving disabled passenger to wait for the next bus as there is no space available.
So fabbers who in your opinion should have the priority? |

Surely having a child gives the parents automatic priority over everyone else regardless. |

Any bus I have seen says the wheelchair area must be vacated if required!
Sorry but its the mums choice to have the shopping etc they could always take a back pack to put shopping in and then be able to fold up the buggy. |

If it's a disabled space the disabled have priority.
We need to cater for mums too. There should be a buggy space.
I couldn't get my children on the bus I had twins with a twin buggy. We walked to railway stations. |

One woman came on said there were other buses she was there first surely the guy can wait! ! I lost my temper and started shouting at my car radio lol |

The London old route master buses weren't designed for anyone but the able bodied when I had young children, so getting them on wasn't an option. |

The disabled person has the right the space has been reserved for them to use.
Yes it's difficult at times juggling babies, pushchairs and shopping but it's manageable as an able bodied person.

Why? The woman chooses to have the baby & take them out and if that was the case with the amount of buggys brought on a bus a disabled person who doesnt choose to be in the chair who could then have to wait hours for a bus with a free space. Buggys fold down for a reason |

People need to grow some manners along with a dose of common sense. I've had to ask people to give up their seat for people on crutches/walking stick etc, it doesn't make me a saint but the blasé nature to others I find weird. |

It is a fair way.
What does take the piss is everyone on the bus tutting at you because you are taking too long to fold up your pushchair while trying to juggle a nappy bag, a hand bag whatever little shopping you have while trying not to drop a baby. |

see the problem with the law is that it says "requested to move" not "required to move"
their was a court case a wheelchair user won because a bus driver said he couldn't force a lady to move from the space, and she refused to move because they child was sleeping in buggy
this was then reversed in the high court.... hence "requested" not "required" |

I loved taking my young kids on the buses in wigan. You'd always get at least two women taking your babies off your hands to help you and they'd grab your toddler so he could sit down safely too.
Buses might need to arrange some better service for disabled people and mums so that it works for all of them?
Disabled people are more likely to not be able to be removed from their wheelchair i reckon, so should get priority for those spaces. I think it shouldn't be expected that children (and there parents) always come first and are a priority when they are mostly just an inconvenience for a short time. |

the biggest problems with people on buses round here are the elderly with shopping trollies they always sit in spaces allocated for wheelchairs and pushchairs and refuse to move |

Think some of those in wheel chairs are the most ignorant people you can come across its hard for them but they go to fast and wont give an inch when there on the pavement just fly round blind corners you can not hear them when there behind you |

if the woman's happy to fold and stow the buggy and cope with the child .. She should not take the disabled seat in the first place .. If the kids too young to do all that safely she should be offered that space as long as a disabled person isn't already occupying it |

The pushchair owners have the option of walking don't they ?
Just turf them off the bus if the won't move. Or a collective booing might embarrass them into moving. |

god forbid would she be spouting that if her child or parent ever became wheelchair bound. |
