Is it naturally red hair or dyed? If it's dyed it will definitely take more than one go.

It is down to the individual. Some take colour more easily than others it will depend upon your natural base colour. Good luck though and seek a good reputable hair dresser

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I helped dye an ex's hair from brown to blond. Bit of hydrogen peroxide and there you go.

It can be hard to get dye to go blonde. Took about 3 lots of highlights to get mine as blonde as I wanted.

It will take a few visits to the hairdressers

As putting blonde on top of red I would think will make it ginger

I think the hair would have to be stripped of the red as well

Although there are some good products out there my advise is if you have never used a colour stripper and never used bleach then go to a hairdresser as they know what they are doing

Anything is possible!

I would seek professional advice from a really good colourist, because I'm pretty sure it will take more than one session to change so dramatically.

Also the sun will affect the colour so make sure your friend factors that in too.

The hair "strippers" you can buy from boots are fantastic, buy two just to be on the safe side. Use The first one and follow the instructions to the letter, there's a lot of rinsing involved and make sure if it says 'rinse for 5 mins' you do rinse for the full 5 minutes.

Leave it a couple of hours before doing anything else to your hair, as older previous colours can come to the surface, hence why you get two boxes.

Good luck x

Clearly a man with exceptionally good taste!

Saying that I do have some sneaky blonde highlights in my naturally red hair but that's because me red hair is coming through much more strawberry blonde in my old age!

They will strip the hair first to get rid of shop bought dye then either apply a full head of highlights or all over tint. You may opt for bleach to be applied all over like a tint but this is very damaging to your hair. Either way it will take some time. You're meant to leave it 2 weeks in between colouring sessions. You can also get toners to help reduce any redness still left in the hair after the bleaching process

If her natural hair colour is fairish than using a home colour stripper could be gentler than the ones hairdressers use.

ColourB4 is great for stripping colour out. Oddly the standard one is more effective than the stronger one!

Just make sure she follows the instructions.

I am by no means an expert but has your friend factored in the holiday element? Recently coloured hair might be affected by pool chemicals too- any decent colourist will be able to advise you on that x

I haven't gone from red but have gone from dark brunette to blonde and it certainly took more than one sitting.

I once acheived it in two sittings (at home) but that was over a couple of days and even then, that killed the hair in the process - Luckily I only did a small strip underneath the hair and not at the top!

Platinum in 3 weeks, I would say she's definitely at risk of looking like a scarecrow. x

Chlorine in pools can make dyed blonde hair go greenish. There is a way to treat it but it's odd. Apply tomato ketchup and it takes the green tinge away - Google it.

I had my hair lightened so I could have a red colour instead of my usual brown. All the stuff they used left my hair in terrible condition and I ended up having my long hair cut into a bob so I didn't have it breaking every time I touched it. That was done at a very well regarded and reputable salon that I'd used for years to get my hair coloured.

As a professional hair stylist, it's very unlikely she'll be platinum in 3 weeks.

How many times she used the red over the blonde is a factor, if only a few applications then it will be easier to remove, if she's been colouring it red over a long period of time it will be stubborn to remove. My advice is to get it done professionally, no question, it's a difficult process to do, and over the years I have seen soooo many disasters when things like this are attempted at home.

This, be careful, I decided on a blonde phase rather than my usual bright red. A home attempt, I ended up with a sticky orange mess. My only option, was to have the lot chopped off. Ive since reverted back to red. Please tell her to go to a reputable hairdresser.

My hair is dark now! It was a couple of years ago when I stripped mine. I used about 4 lots of bleach and two strippers in the space of a week.

My hair was so bad that I couldn't brush it as it was matted with the bleach and in terrible condition. And it was still platinum roots and ginger everywhere else.

I did mine at home.. I think any good hairdresser would recommend waiting until after a holiday. 3 weeks isn't long enough to let it recover even if it works.

I agree...strip first then reb leach. ..I'd leave it stripped till just before holiday then bleach as she will have regrowth in 3 weeks x

Its possible but you could seriously damage your hair so best see the advice or a professional who can look at your hair.

I had pretty fair hair when I bleached mine and I'd say it took me almost a year to get it to the platinum colour I wanted. I'd defiantly not recommend if she is going away! The sun and chlorine will make it either orange (sun) or green (chlorine!)

Strippers are ok, but can turn ginger if taking red out. Did mine a month back and had to re dye it back as looked like Chucky!

So wouldn't recommend it.

Thank you again to everyone for sane and sensible advice x

Qwk update x

One salon appt in x hair was stripped of colour x

And top head highlights added x

No chance of platinum blond before holidays x

Roots top up before sunshine break and colour reassessment x possibly few shade lighter x

Undercut dyed dark x

So no platinum mileyCyrus look achieved x but a lighter shorter style x
