"When people say 'to be honest' I shut down a bit.
Why, in the first instance would they admit to lie? To be honest, it is just a question.
"

People say it to make the bullshit seem more true.
"I'm a stock trader and I work on wall street"
Is taken LESS seriously than:
"To be honest, I'm a stock trader and I work on Wall Street"
Because you cannot read the rest of the sentence without accepting that he's being honest.
Even if it's shite.
You only come to the conclusion of it being shite after you accepted he was being honest and you needed to Prove it was bullshit in the first place. |

I'm often amazed by how literally people take speech.
I say 'to be honest' a lot, I don't however think about those words and evaluate them with such intensity. It is just a habit of speech I've got into.
I say love a lot too, the last time I said it today was when I ate a juicy peach and I uttered 'i love this peach'... Now what could I have meant, am I a person without feelings, do I put so little emphasis on love and is it so meaningless to me, that I can attach that word to inanimate objects. Or have I just git into a speech habit...mm difficult one |

Agree with this. People often say "I'm starving"...they aren't they're just hungry, they didn't really nearly have a heart attack either and the amount of times I hear people say "I literally nearly died"....no, you didn't. But I think we all know that they are all just figures of speech. |
