"Lightweights were made in Series 2 and 3. Only sold to the military. Very basic but some of the best driving fun possible!!"
Posibly I'm confusing it with the engine then as im sure that was a 2.25 little. Mine was an ex radio car still had the gun mounts in the back. As i said ither that the 17 to the gal i loved the old thing and have some very found memerys if you exclude pushing the fucker to a garage every time it run dry |

I wish they would go off road, you only need an off roader when you're going off road, not in the middle of Cheltenham blocking the entire road because you cannot parallel park the bloody thing and then have the nerve to have vote Green sticker. |

I used to have a tax exempt series 2a on coils , used to go off roading at Tong , Briercliff and Mudbugz at Castleford and Flappits quarry in Bradford.
I have a 3.2 DiD Shogun now great car but I do miss my Landy would of been ideal here having a roll cage and being able to take the door windows off |

"Not into Off-roaders. Prefer my sports cars
Had most but find em boring now as you'll need to have spent a few quid to beat me mwhahaha"
I don't go for the norm though.
Won't buy anything European or Japanese.
Perhaps I should have said Muscle Cars instead. Of the American variety.
Next one does 0-60 in 5.5 seconds stock. That's good enough for me |

I've had a series 2a ( which I took to Denmark and drove on the sea when it froze over), Series 3 swb derv and Series 3 lwb safari.
Three Range Rovers, one 1977 and two 1983, still have one,it was the first with the Lt77 5 speed gearbox and was used by the press such as Autocar.
Nowadays, other than the Range Rover which is off the road with sill rot,the missus has a Freelander which she loves, I have a Isuzu Bighorn and a 1956 Bedford RL. |

The hardest part about Land Rovers is trying to find ones that have not been fucked around with. An origial Series 3 is a rarity now. Most of them have had TDi engines slung in, ally checkerplate screwed everywhere and all that One life live it crap stuck all over them! |

Built them, fixed them, love them, drive them...always.
From Series, through to Range Rover...always have a LR for getting to places where lesser vehicles fear to tread...in style

I have a 1983 Range Rover, have had her for sixteen years, an Isuzu Bighorn and a 1956 Bedford RL.
Used to do a lot of off roading, just a bit of greenlaning these days. |

Had a series 2A for over 30 years, it was a workhorse, it had to be, took a lot of upkeep over the years and eventually had a new galvanised chassis and new engine. Used Discoveries at work, they were unreliable, cramped and expensive to run.
More than happy these days with a skoda estate |

I had to use my beaten up Disco to transport some stuff into central London last week. It was amazing, no-one pulled out in front of me, if I indicated to change lanes a gap appeared. I think it was the most relaxing drive I have ever had in central London traffic |

I've got two cars.
A range rover classic LSE, with a huge amount of space in the back, that would be perfect for outdoor fun. Used for green laning, carrying bikes for rides further afield, camping trips, holidays and when I need to move more than two people.
But as the only car meets I've done have been spur of the moment, they happened in my smart car. |

Don't try going off road in it then, you will either belly as there is not much ground clearance or spin your tyres fruitlessly with your super slick Road tyres. |

I must admit, I can't see the point of quads. All the cons of a bike, all the cons of a car...
A bike yes, a car yes but not a quad.
I am not knocking you and believe each to their own.
Unfortunately round here, they just tend to be riden on the road by groups of middle aged men in a style that wins them no friends... |

Lol... Fair enough...I will admit I can see a point to them off road for work and play but not on road unless the rider has a disability.
On a bike you get wet but can get through small gaps. In a car you are warm and dry but sit in traffic. On a quad you get cold and wet sitting in traffic... |

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack! |
`96 Disco 1 daily driver, `94 Disco 1 Xmas tree - was a daily driver until auto box and transfer box blew just as I was about to put a rear floor in it, `82 ex-MOD PLOD Range Rover now SORN and awaiting ressurection, `67Series 2a waiting for the 3.5 EFI engine conversion to be completed - been like that for some 25 years now but with two Little Grey Ferguson tractors to keep going I reckon that will extend by another 10 years! NEARLY brought an exMOD 101 but thought better of it as I would need a Hi-Ab to get Mum into the passenger seat!
Have done a bit of mild off-roading, mainly some of the lanes in South Wiltshire which used to be very good at maintaining information on what BOATs (Byeway Open To All Traffic) could be legally driven on!

My land rover is no bigger than a standard car,so how is it clogging the roads up more than a car...what's wrong with voting green while driving a land rover...the things run forever,so the carbon footprint print is far better than most cars on the road today. |

I think you are talking about KA's and Micra's...
The smaller the car, the more likely it is to be parked in two spaces...
The most polluting time in a cars life is its construction. So my 30 year old Land Rover is more environmentally friendly than cars that get replaced every 3 years.
The most polluting part of the car is the battery.
So overall Prius's are pretty poor when it comes to being green... Toxic green maybe!!! |

Used to have a defender 300TD, and before that a 200. Best thing I ever did was sold the thing and replaced with a Mitsubishi pick up. I got rid of my defender in July and I am still in love with the fact that in my new truck, the temperature in the cab can be different to the temperature outside the cab.... |

We had a new disco 8 years ago! We know why they called them a Discovery, because every time you go out in it you never know what vehicle you're coming home in !!
Got it all valeted once for a special evening do-broke down for that!
Did the same 3 months later.
Washed and polished it a year later looking forward to a posh wedding-guess what? Ended up going in the works pick-up !
Broke down with a trailer on-the AA don't like trailers!
Not had much luck with ours,we did how ever buy a spare car after 3 years because we got so fed up with it breaking down. A 1994 isuzu trooper with 200,000 miles on it for £360.00 which we use when the £38.000 disco is at the garage.Once it was at the main dealers for 11 weeks and no courtesy car !!!
So we have a pick-up (Japanese)a disco ( some of the time) and a spare one (Japanese) between the two of us.
When we go on holiday now we always tow the caravan with the Isuzu trooper(No seats in the back)and the rest of the family follow in the pick-up.
At least the disco can't break down at home !
OH! hang on a mo did I mention the time ......
So much for British engineering.
Sorry to say this though. |

I've had the same Defender 90 for the past 20 years as an every day driver and only had 2 mechanical breakdowns 1 was a timing failure. The second was a broken crank shaft in the supposedly bullet proof 300 tdi. So I can't complain about reliability here. |

They're pretty major failures though. Was the crank failure on the same engine as the timing failure? If so, they're usually connected and down to the repaired not replacing the crank shells after the previous failure, they just fix the head and think it will work. It doesn't.
Like in said previously in the thread. I build them and I wouldn't own a modern LR or RR for all the tea in China. |

It was indeed the same engine the most surprisng thing was when the crank failed on the web between no.1 pot and the front main bearing the engine still ran on tick over, though a little noisy and I drove the 6 miles home extremely slowly.
I'm also not a fan of the newer vehicles with all the electronics, if it breaks I want some chance of fixing it with and adjustable spanner, lump hammer and welding set. |

Tommys top tip:
ALWAYS change the shell bearings after a timing belt failure because if you don't the crank WILL fail. |

It wasn't actually a belt failure but an after market timing gear conversion that failed if I'd stuck with keep changing the timing belt it may never have happened but being lazy and thinking it would pay for it's self by not keep having to replace the belt I had the gears fitted, biggest waste of money ever with the landy. |

"I've had the same Defender 90 for the past 20 years as an every day driver and only had 2 mechanical breakdowns 1 was a timing failure.
It wasn't actually a belt failure but an after market timing gear conversion that failed if I'd stuck with keep changing the timing belt it may never have happened but being lazy and thinking it would pay for it's self by not keep having to replace the belt I had the gears fitted, biggest waste of money ever with the landy."
If Mr Piston introduced himself to Mr Valve it equates to pretty much the same damage. I've seen it happen on so many 'repaired' vehicles. I always advise a shell change, it's only an extra £50 and guarantees you don't spin a shell bearing a couple of months after spending £1500 on a rebuild. |

If you strip an entire engine down to every last nut and bolt, this is always worth doing, be it a high powered motor or just a run about.

"I wish they would go off road, you only need an off roader when you're going off road, not in the middle of Cheltenham blocking the entire road because you cannot parallel park the bloody thing and then have the nerve to have vote Green sticker.
Toxic green maybe!!!"
If you trade in your 3 year old car they don't crush it
Someone poorer buys it
And it could well last 30 years
So your logic is flawed
It's just the start of the lifecycle |

The battery which is the most polluting part of the build will not last 30 or anywhere near that long.
Cars like the Prius are not built to last anywhere like 30 years either.

But modern cars are made of stuff that`s more complicated to recycle. Lots of plastics, lots of electronics etc. and are becoming more out of reach to be repaired by a competent DIY person than older cars. My `96 Discovery has a windscreen leak which will require breaking the £100+ windscreen to remove the sealing and has to be done by a specialist windscreen fitter. My now deceased `94 Discovery could have a new £40 rubber seal fitted by me and a mate using a couple of lengths of strong cord! Progress! |

I get that - but modern cars are lasting longer than 70's rust buckets

Most normal cars will be unserviceable within 10 to 15 years with parts unobtainable, meaning you break a light or dent a wing and the car will be written off.
About the same time mechanical parts will also start becoming unavailable as well...

There was a study carried out comparing the environmental impact of a hummer vs a prius which the hummer came out on top of due as mentioned to longevity and not being packed with batteries. Much to Toyota's disgust! |

You`d be surprised at how many "`70`s rust buckets" survive! I may be wrong but cars that were popular 15-20 years ago seemed to have disappeared from the roads far quicker than the equivalent cars would have done in the past. People would change major components, quite badly accident damaged cars would be repaired even to the extent of transferring running gear to a new body shell. Rusty sills and floors welded up etc. etc. and much more and it was within the capabilities of quite unskilled people to do a lot of this work, even at the roadside. But now certain components can`t be replaced without a computer to set it up after fitting, bodywork is much more stressed so relatively minor bumps result in a vehicle being written off, and people have more disposable income and "better things to do" with their down time. In my younger days self car maintenance and repairs were a necessity as I simply didn`t have the cash to have a newer car or be able to pay for repairs. In one way, I have gone full circle as I now have two 1950`s Ferguson tractors which need to worked on, one need a complete engine rebuild and I`m loving it! The best form of recycling - keeping what you have running! |

Car manufacturers stop supplying parts for cars at different stages. Some parts can be unavailable before end of production. Other parts can be available for a couple of years after production ends. Some parts can still be available 10 years later. I worked in the motor trade for a few years and my father did for over 40 years. I have dealt with part suppliers and spoken to the manufacturer trying to track down unavailable parts.
So I actually have experience of what I am talking about...

Oh and before I forget, in 10 years time some of the parts available will cost far more than the car is worth... |

The Landrover Centre at Lockwood some times have the odd one of these, pretty steep prices though. Last time I was there they had a 101 from the film Judge Dread in the yard, the looked cool in the film but when you see them up close you realize how they got their nickname "dread sheds". |
