"Punks not dead. It's just having a bit of a sit down. Were not as young as we used to be." Punk was a funny genre when it manifested in the mid 70s. It was once described as "an art form purveyed by the untalented sold by the unscrupulous to the unhinged" Firm but fair I would suggest.

What are your I'll considered opinions on modern art?

The greatest rock and roll swindle. The only one of the pistols that didn't play on the recordings was sid vicious. That's hardly news! The bands you refer to became part of the established bedrock of the music industry which was totally alien to what punk was about. Art that is nothing more than provocative has no meaning or value. An unmade bed or foetuses in formaldehyde are nothing more than a provocative piss take. I went to the Whitworth art gallery in Manchester on Sunday and on the whole I was underwhelmed with the exhibits. Am I judgemental? It's still going, go to a punk gig, I dare you! You wouldn't know where to find one though as unless it's there in front of you, you obviously don't get that it exists. There was a great music critic who once said "The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.” He was quite right! As for art I take on board your comments and will still have my own opinion on what I think is talented and well constructed pieces of work.

"Punks not dead. It's just having a bit of a sit down. Were not as young as we used to be.Punk was a funny genre when it manifested in the mid 70s. It was once described as "an art form purveyed by the untalented sold by the unscrupulous to the unhinged" Firm but fair I would suggest. Purveyed by the untalented? No! Sold by the unscrupulous, yes, but that's the music industry across the genres. Unhinged? I doubt you can accurately diagnose the mental state of millions of people by the music they like. What are your I'll considered opinions on modern art? Those musicians from the era were that musicians one of the biggest selling "punk" anthems was recorded by session musicians! As for the music industry I work in the madness that is "art" Modern art? Damien Hirst, Tracey Eminen Jane Jones et al? I would put them in the same category. I went to a Tracey exhibition and found her work to be tired dishevelled and unkempt.............it was an unmade bed! I take it you mean the sex pistols? The album title was a bit if a giveaway. The greatest rock and roll swindle. The only one of the pistols that didn't play on the recordings was sid vicious. That's hardly news! The clash, the dammed, xtc, UK sub's, angelic upstarts, the banshees, stranglers, stiff little fingers, the exploited...all there own music, all played by themselves. That bed was just one piece of her work, do you judge everyone on one sole effort? The Punk era was just a reactionary position by the youth of the day and lasted a couple of years at most. I suppose I am but that if someone exhibits their work then that's the trade off? Punk didn't just last a few years, you just stopped hearing about it in the media. It's still going, go to a punk gig, I dare you! You wouldn't know where to find one though as unless it's there in front of you, you obviously don't get that it exists. Punk doesn't need the media, that was one of the points of it. Just because the media latched on to it then got bored, doesn't mean the music died. If your underwhelmed by art, it might be that it's YOU that's not looking properly. Buy an easel and bash something out if it pissrs you off thatuch. Express yourself! You forget I work in the music industry and most of the "punk bands" of today have the same aspirations as one direction and that is to make money.............lots of it! I go to gigs three or four times a week and I see a lot of good up and coming bands and a lot of dross who have that I wanna be a rock star glint in there eye but are 40 years to late with that attitude. I didn't forget anything. You never told me!!! It all becomes clear now... You need a break from it. Anyone that wants to be in a band that doesn't have that " I want to be a rock star" glint and attitude doesn't deserve to be one. It's worse than a lottery winner saying "it won't change me". Seemingly you never saw Slaughter and the Dogs or Headbanger and the Nosebleeds at the electric Circus? It was kids being kids but a certain few saw that there was money to be made in this reactionary genre and the biggest promoter of the scene at that time was a certain Mr Bill Grundy as he projected the Pistols into what became mass hysteria. I didn't forget anything. You never told me!!! It all becomes clear now... You need a break from it. Anyone that wants to be in a band that doesn't have that " I want to be a rock star" glint and attitude doesn't deserve to be one. It's worse than a lottery winner saying "it won't change me". As for the music industry I work in the madness that is "art" You do forget..............perhaps your forgetfulness is caused by standing too close to Marshall Amps at a gig in the Electric Circus in Manchester? No such thing as too close. You need to feel the Noize!!!My Boltonian friend by my reckoning you were about 4 years old at the height of the punk era? Seemingly you never saw Slaughter and the Dogs or Headbanger and the Nosebleeds at the electric Circus? It was kids being kids but a certain few saw that there was money to be made in this reactionary genre and the biggest promoter of the scene at that time was a certain Mr Bill Grundy as he projected the Pistols into what became mass hysteria. The result was normal musically engineered albums which you listen to now through rose coloured spectacles! The noise at work regulations have put paid to too much noise! I saw the stranglers in a tiny venue in Manchester about 1990. I couldn't hear properly for two days. My brothers bought punk records, even worse some gear, and wore it if they could sneak it out of the house. Bill grundy was a cunt. Just like Tony Wilson. Is that your considered and articulate opinion? A tiny venue in Manchester for legends of Punk..............they lasted well then! It's not about the size of your audience, its about the quality of your songs and the emotions they stir up. But you wouldn't know that, your on the business end. And they were cunts.I was in Dublin recently and the artist (well known) was being interviewed by a TV personality. During a break the TV chap came over to me and the venue manager and asked if the TV crew could follow the artist for a couple of hours and go back stage for a sort of "fly on the wall" section to the piece. He was a little taken aback with the response which was on the lines of "don't be stupid and naïve. We are selling an illusion here a game of smoke and mirrors. We stay in the green room and you stick to the approved questions otherwise we finish now" The artist hails from the era we are discussing and is about as punk now as Billy Grundy! As I say its great looking through rose coloured glasses as they make Mr Hirst and Ms Eminen look talented! Was he eating buttered crumpets?" Not as far as I am aware......

"Current Anarchist and punk here. Had a teen Goth phase. Don't dress like a punk because that in and of itself is branding and I am so vehemently against branding. So basically, yes, I'm a punk music fan and am totally down with the attitude and causes but I don't dress like one because that's silly (IMO - each to their own, not starting a fight etc)." I stopped wearing the punk/metal "uniform" when I was on a night bus going home from a gig and the whole bus looked the same I think i was 17 from that point on I wore what I wanted and cut/dyed my hair my way for me that is what punk was about in the beginning being free being yourself I am a FREAK and very happy to be so
