I go to gigs three or four times a week and I see a lot of good up and coming bands and a lot of dross who have that I wanna be a rock star glint in there eye but are 40 years to late with that attitude. There was a great music critic who once said "The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.” He was quite right! As for art I take on board your comments and will still have my own opinion on what I think is talented and well constructed pieces of work. | |||

I went to the Whitworth art gallery in Manchester on Sunday and on the whole I was underwhelmed with the exhibits. Am I judgemental? I suppose I am but that if someone exhibits their work then that's the trade off?

Art that is nothing more than provocative has no meaning or value. An unmade bed or foetuses in formaldehyde are nothing more than a provocative piss take. I went to the Whitworth art gallery in Manchester on Sunday and on the whole I was underwhelmed with the exhibits. Am I judgemental? I suppose I am but that if someone exhibits their work then that's the trade off?
Punk didn't just last a few years, you just stopped hearing about it in the media. It's still going, go to a punk gig, I dare you! You wouldn't know where to find one though as unless it's there in front of you, you obviously don't get that it exists. Punk doesn't need the media, that was one of the points of it. Just because the media latched on to it then got bored, doesn't mean the music died.
If your underwhelmed by art, it might be that it's YOU that's not looking properly. Buy an easel and bash something out if it pissrs you off thatuch. Express yourself! You forget I work in the music industry and most of the "punk bands" of today have the same aspirations as one direction and that is to make money.............lots of it! I go to gigs three or four times a week and I see a lot of good up and coming bands and a lot of dross who have that I wanna be a rock star glint in there eye but are 40 years to late with that attitude. There was a great music critic who once said "The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.” He was quite right!
As for art I take on board your comments and will still have my own opinion on what I think is talented and well constructed pieces of work.
I didn't forget anything. You never told me!!! It all becomes clear now... You need a break from it. Anyone that wants to be in a band that doesn't have that " I want to be a rock star" glint and attitude doesn't deserve to be one. It's worse than a lottery winner saying "it won't change me".

You do forget..............perhaps your forgetfulness is caused by standing too close to Marshall Amps at a gig in the Electric Circus in Manchester?

Seemingly you never saw Slaughter and the Dogs or Headbanger and the Nosebleeds at the electric Circus? It was kids being kids but a certain few saw that there was money to be made in this reactionary genre and the biggest promoter of the scene at that time was a certain Mr Bill Grundy as he projected the Pistols into what became mass hysteria. The result was normal musically engineered albums which you listen to now through rose coloured spectacles!
The noise at work regulations have put paid to too much noise!
I saw the stranglers in a tiny venue in Manchester about 1990. I couldn't hear properly for two days. My brothers bought punk records, even worse some gear,and wore it if they could sneak it out of the house. Bill grundy was a cunt. During a break the TV chap came over to me and the venue manager and asked if the TV crew could follow the artist for a couple of hours and go back stage for a sort of "fly on the wall" section to the piece.
He was a little taken aback with the response which was on the lines of "don't be stupid and naïve. We are selling an illusion here a game of smoke and mirrors. We stay in the green room and you stick to the approved questions otherwise we finish now"
The artist hails from the era we are discussing and is about as punk now as Billy Grundy!

Sold by the unscrupulous, yes, but that's the music industry across the genres. Unhinged? I doubt you can accurately diagnose the mental state of millions of people by the music they like. Modern art? Damien Hirst, Tracey Eminen Jane Jones et al? I would put them in the same category. I went to a Tracey exhibition and found her work to be tired dishevelled and unkempt.............it was an unmade bed!

The clash, the dammed, xtc, UK sub's, angelic upstarts, the banshees, stranglers, stiff little fingers, the exploited...all there own music, all played by themselves.
That bed was just one piece of her work, do you judge everyone on one sole effort?The Punk era was just a reactionary position by the youth of the day and lasted a couple of years at most. The bands you refer to became part of the established bedrock of the music industry which was totally alien to what punk was about.

"Not sure what I am pink hair and huge rock and metal fan??" we are the same not sure any more started with the clash and Maiden then slyer then GnR then Marilin Manson then Limp then then then then EVERYTHING in between lol iv been DJing for over 25 year from pubs to 100k European festivals Punks not dead like metal and rock its just not so much on the TV but if you look at any movie soundtrack in the last 10 or so years they are all full of rock and metal we still filling clubs with punks and rocker across the uk and now we are even bringing it the swingers clubs (see my profile) | |||
