Somethings are intuitive and the instructions are unnecessary. Somethings I've had to return to the manual (mainly my parents' fucking TV recording box thing).

...Up on the Downs

Never! As my beloved vet once said - that's why we only ever get about 10% of the functionality of our gadgets, we have no idea how to use them!

I think of myself as pretty mechanically minded but would have no idea how to go about fitting a Car Stereo into an iphone

I'm a typical man and just assume I know how everything works without instructions. However it doesn't always work as a set of drawers from ikea is currently being used as a stool lol

Important piece of advice:

"Always read the instructions, even if you don't follow them"

When it comes to new gadgets I usually start tinkering with it until something screws up, then I rush for the instructions and pray to the technology gods I haven't broken it.

I normally try to do stuff without instructions, usually I get by but often that means I'm not properly utilising all the functions of the gadget so I don't actually know what I'm missing!

For example last week I finally found out by tapping the home button on the iPhone twice it shows all the apps you currently have open ( LOADS in my case!) which was slowing my phone down!

Only when I buy stuff for work so I don't miss critical info or assembly sequencing. When I buy things for home I don't bother.

Shrodingers painkillers box, the paper is at both ends until you open the box and it's at the one you open.

I like the pictorial instructions you get which have (almost mockingly) smug looking cartoon people.

Plus, then you can just take a pen to them, draw in some speech bubbles and turn it into a free comic book. For bonus points, this can be used to trick children into assembling furniture for you.

I laugh at most roadside and pedestrian instructions, and most ikea kind of stuff, but I do look at more technical / unfamiliar ones like a lawnmower the other day I put together (not from scratch, just a lot more pieces than I expected!).

here

Top tip:

If the manufacturer wants you to read the instructions for a item you have just spent your money on - there's a good reason why - read them.

If you knacker the item or it doesn't work because you haven't read and followed the instructions, don't start bleating about the item being useless, crap and demanding a refund!!

Just saying!

I only read the instructions on flat-pack stuff. If it's got curves and is pink I just use my intuition

Rarely read instructions initially.

Maybe read them a day or two later to discover there are additional features or I have missed something!
