Has anyone else heard of this? I'm loving the idea and will be getting my tattoo done shortly, as a long standing sufferer of depression and anxiety I think it's very inspired x |

"It's a group or charity set up to help raise awareness of mental health disorders, best Google it for the full info x"
I did just that.
Project Semicolon (The Semicolon Project) is a faith-based non-profit movement dedicated .......
It lost my interest at 'faith based'. |

I read that people are having semi colons tattooed to show that they have, in the past, had suicidal thoughts or attempted suicide but have made it through the other side.
Didn't read anything about it being faith based though. |

No what is it ?
"A semicolon is used when an author could've chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life."
Mr ddc"
They didn't use a semicolon.
Life sentence sounds like how I feel.

I think it's all rather bizarre.
If it helps empower people and bring awareness to the subject then great, but I think it's something deeply personal and not something I'd either shout about (and not through being ashamed) or brandish myself with.
Each to their own. |

Attempting suicide isn't something someone should be ashamed of but is it something that you would want to advertise to EVERY person you meet EVERY day ?
If your tat isn't visible I fail to see how it supports the group.
How much faith is someone going to have in someone who advertises their mental health? |

I'm not ashamed, I'm not afraid to allow people into a personal side of me, after all I struggle on every day with it, I'm stuck with it, would anyone loose faith, respect etc in anyone who suffers from asthma or has hayfever? Why should I hide my depression / anxiety dissorder |

Because people with hayfever blow their own nose. |

You know what worries me
There are some people who prey on the vunrable
I'll leave it at that....... |

I never thought of that aspect. That's another reason not to wear vulnerability on your skin. I don't mean people should hide. Mental health touches every family but im not sure about tats. |

It's a nice idea.. But personally I would get something that means something to me personally as a sufferer of depression and anxiety.. Not something that everyone else has and everyone knows what it means. I wouldn't want to advertise it and have people jump to their own conclusions.. I'd rather have something that means the same but other people won't know. Does that make sense? |

I have and do but when I choose, which isn't all day every day to everyone who can see me.

Yes it makes sense, have seen some beautiful butterflies with the semi colon added into the body, but as it's always personal choice and what makes you happy, it's your body after all |

But anyway, the tattoo is only a small part of the idea, and more about raising awareness about mental health issues which can only be a good thing considering the stigma attached to the general condition |

Would lose my interest for the same reason.
I have suffered with depression in the past (for a period of 5 years) but I won't be rushing out to get a semi- colon tattoo. I already have three tattoos, so it's not an anti tattoo thing.

Because people with hayfever blow their own nose."
But they don't feel the need to hide their streaming eyes and stuffy nose and frequently discuss how hard summer is and the different types of pollen and whether today is a high pollen count. They are.also very comfortable blowing their own noses in public with no shame or embarrassment and if anyone looks at them funny for doing so they simply say 'hayfever' and that's it.
Would that we could talk about depression and it's symptoms and effects that way. |

Pretty much sums up my view too. |

My understanding of the tattoo/project was that it's to raise awareness of depression and other mental illnesses and the potential suicidal/harmful tendencies that can accompany these illnesses.
The whole idea is to try and promote 'taking a pause' before making that final decision, taking that action, teetering on the edge of that frenzy.
I wasn't under the impression that you had to have been in that position yourself to get this tattoo but just want to support the project, want to help raise awareness for mental illness and its potential effects and show a person suffering that you're there to support them or for them to talk to and help them take their pause.
Of course that's just how I understood it, I could be wrong, but I think it's less about showing the world your weakness but showing and sharing your strength, be it for yourself or for others. |

"My choice in permently having a reminder for when times are hard and knowing things will get better"
The the scars do a good enough job of being a permanent reminder for me.

My youngest suffered from mental health issues: she was sectioned at 15. Her scars are a permanent reminder.
At the time she was a Goth wearing long sleeves. Now, she's "girly" and wears sleeveless tops and dresses: her scars are visable and attract attention. She will discuss it, she isn't ashamed: love, support and "luck" saw her through it.
She chooses a different way to others and continue to help herself. She has written a book, set up an online magazine and her PhD will further help.
I'm not a religious person but I always think of the bible tale of the widows mite and the Pharisees: some people go about helping and supporting, quietly under the radar whilst others feel the need to draw attention to themselves.

Personally, I'd have the same faith in that person as I have in any other person. Perhaps the negative reactions such as this show how far we need to cone in learning to deal with mental health issues. It shouldn't be something we hide for fear of being judged or looked at less favourably.
Would you tell a chemo patient that they can't go round showing their hair loss from their treatment? People who survive cancer are often lauded as hero's/inspirations and celebrated...quite a number if them have tattoos to celebrate winning their battle yet someone who has come through their darkest moments are told they shouldn't do the same because it shows that they are weak?! Baffles me, it really does. |

Our daughter suffered years of depression in her teens and early twenties but now thankfully is a much stronger and happier person.
She had the semi colon tattooed behind her ear last week as she said it is a reminder of her past and how she fought to move on.
A symbol of pride and positivity ... no shame. |
