Ha....who'd of thought I'd be a poster girl!!!
I made a #thisgirlcan poster using an app on Facebook and entered into a draw for it to be used as an advertising poster.....and it got chosen!!
It's going to be on an advertising board in my local shopping centre and nationwide alongside (thousands of) others!!
I know it's a gimmick but I'm a little bit giddy about it!! |

"Thisgirlcan what?
It's a sports/physical activity campaign. Thisgirlcan... get sweaty... play football... be happy swimming even without the bikini beach body..."
So do they actually do any of that stuff or is it just a "let's grab a bunch of overweight people and lie that they do all this sports stuff"?

The point of the campaign is that they do it. Hence Evie! being picked, I'm sure. The campaign has been about real people, not models.

She's not part of the campaign (and she's American so doesn't count) and it's not a sport but have a look at the picture Jessamyn Stanley posts. She's been inspiring me to push myself further recently.
Evie! is my running inspiration as I get ready for my little run next week.

I'm getting a bit worried now. My number arrived and it's got a chip to record my time. It's going to be so slow they won't need the chip as I'll be last.

This is exactly it. I did Park Run and was near the back, but the volunteer marshals kept me going and hopefully I'll beat my time, next time.
Well done Evie on the poster. Sounds like a great campaign. |

Evie that's bloody brilliant. Your posts about park runs have nearly made me pluck up the courage to go to one, Maybe your poster will tip me over the edge
Despite usually hating this stuff I like the #thisgirlcan campaign (although I'm generally not keen on the 'girl' bit).
It's not just about showing fat people do exercise (or pretending to, because obviously no one fat ever even moves off the sofa). Even if it was I think it would have merit, but it's more than that. |

Shame that a campaign to motivate women to build exercise into our lives infantilises us by referring to us as 'girl'.

This highly publicised national campaign isn't aimed at achieving the body beautiful like most of the other campaigns. It's about real women doing exercise, getting sweaty, wearing no make up, not having perfect hair in the gym and being proud of it.
I'm surprised you aren't aware of it to be honest. |

Personally I think it's sexist.
When I exercise I get sweaty, certainly don't have perfect (for perfect read 'any'! ) hair and never wear make up.

But why does that need to go on a poster "look a pretty girl in a headscarf plays tennis OMG amazballs".
It doesn't really seem to make sense.
If it's inspired by that beach body ready poster as a sort to protest to it I must admit I found women's reactions to that model ironic if you read anything about her she's quite amazing in what she's achieved she's not just some model with an agency she's always been her own manager done huge amounts of hard work and succeeded because of it but then she just got absolutely slated by "feminists" when she should have been held up as a "look what hard work can get you" female role model. |

It's nothing to do with the beach body ready thing, I think it was actually around before that anyway. It's designed to encourage more women to do sport, and the way I interpret the campaign is that it's trying to show more images of more women playing sport and doing exercise, outside of elite athletes or the more extreme end of the fitness market.
Like there's a young woman in false eyelashes running round a council estate. Or a woman in a hijab playing tennis. Or a fat woman jogging. These aren't images you usually see. If it encourages someone to think they can go for a run, or to a gym, or to a class, or to a tennis court, because there might be someone like them there, then it's a positive thing, in my _iew. It can be really intimidating doing any of those things, or at least it is for me.
It's not even about weight, it's about women and sport. The reason it's targeted to women is because there's a lower takeup of sport among women than men.
I like it. And I also think Evie should be fucking chuffed, I would be. |

There is a huge drop off of girls in sport and physical activity at puberty. They rarely go on to pick up activities later on as women. The campaign is about encouraging girls and women to get active. The poster campaign supports a television and cinema ad campaign showing girls and women running, swimming, cycling, playing football, in the gym etc. and enjoying themselves - whatever their shape, colour and ability status.

So why wasn't she being paraded for her achievements instead of for her physical appearance? The advert mentioned nothing of her abilities or prowess, it was "look here's a woman who looks a certain way in a bikini" and you should too or don't you dare get your flab out on a beach.
And diet shakes = look what hard work can get you? For a range called the "weight loss collection"? That's weight loss, not get fitter, stronger, faster, healthier, better at your chosen sport....
Aye, whatever. I'm just a "feminist". |

Because that's her job?
If they were advertising for a career in model management then they would probably have mentioned it."
So why is me criticising the advert taken as a criticism of her and what she's achieved then? |

Lol you just explained it......normal women (thin/fat/able bodied/disabled etc) celebrating being active. Real people, real activities.
It's not hard to understand really.

"
Of course there's a huge drop off there's not a massive motivation for it. There was an article on the BBC a few years back where they said at around 14 the competition level girls start losing out to even the average boys in sport and athletics which is going to be a big demotivator.
It's not helped by the fact that many of the women's Olympic and world records simply cannot be beat any more.
Take the women's 100m sprint the record hasn't been broken since the 80's and it's not going to be beaten either because it was set unsurprisingly before the introduction of mandatory drugs testing.
there's a lot less chance for glory in the women's sport unlike the men's because there's only a handful of events that don't have longstanding unbreakable records from the 80s |

"Thisgirlcan what?
It's a sports/physical activity campaign. Thisgirlcan... get sweaty... play football... be happy swimming even without the bikini beach body...
So do they actually do any of that stuff or is it just a "let's grab a bunch of overweight people and lie that they do all this sports stuff"?
Mr Cynical
Meh I'm a bloke most things marketed at me would require the use of copious amounts of drugs to achieve the physique of the models so I'm somewhat cynical of advertising campaigns lol
This highly publicised national campaign isn't aimed at achieving the body beautiful like most of the other campaigns. It's about real women doing exercise, getting sweaty, wearing no make up, not having perfect hair in the gym and being proud of it.
I'm surprised you aren't aware of it to be honest.
I saw one today and I was just some Muslim girl wearing a headscarf holding a tennis racket with the phrase "I like playing the game, but I like winning more. #thisgirlcan"
Didn't really get the point of it th she wasn't fat or disabled or anything just looked like a normal person if I hadn't seen this thread I'd have had no idea what it was actually about.
Still don't really

I didn't day you did.
I was referring to the events at the time which had a lot of feminists having a go at her for selling out her gender/portraying an unrealistic image for someone who doesn't spend all their life in he gym etc.
When in reality she's a very successful business woman. |

"She's not part of the campaign (and she's American so doesn't count) and it's not a sport but have a look at the picture Jessamyn Stanley posts. She's been inspiring me to push myself further recently.
Evie! is my running inspiration as I get ready for my little run next week.
Oooh good luck x x
I'm getting a bit worried now. My number arrived and it's got a chip to record my time. It's going to be so slow they won't need the chip as I'll be last.
It doesn't matter of you're last, it matters that you did it x lapping everyone on the couch x "
Your far out lapping me, so well done you! |

Those are also valid arguments, which don't dispute that she's a successful business woman. I can criticise German foreign policy decisions in its negotiations with Greece, without this being an indictment on all of Angela Merkel's achievements. |

"You hadn't even posted in the thread when I said that so I'm not sure how you thought it was aimed at you critiquing the advert. "
I had. I posted up near the top. That's not my point. I AM one of the people who was really critical of that advert on the threads at the time.
Anyway, I don't want Evie's thread to get hijacked. It's a positive thread about a positive thing. |

"Ha....who'd of thought I'd be a poster girl!!!
I made a #thisgirlcan poster using an app on Facebook and entered into a draw for it to be used as an advertising poster.....and it got chosen!!
It's going to be on an advertising board in my local shopping centre and nationwide alongside (thousands of) others!!
I know it's a gimmick but I'm a little bit giddy about it!!"
Happy days evie.

The campaign isn't about being a record-breaker but about enjoying physical activity. That bit seems to be eluding you, whatever anyone writes on here.
You are not the primary target of the campaign, and from your comments you would fit somewhere at the third tier level. If nothing else you now at least know about the campaign even if it hasn't won you over to think "good on them" or "I'll be supportive about women getting physical".

"It's nothing to do with the beach body ready thing, I think it was actually around before that anyway.
I like it. And I also think Evie should be fucking chuffed, I would be."
I did my dissertation at uni on this exact subject - media images of women in sport. (Get me - 20 years ahead of my time! )
It's uncanny that pretty much everything I wrote is still largely true - 99% of adverts, sport related fashion shoots and coverage of real sporting women is dominated by the stereotypical 'attractive' women's body style. It's only campaigns like this that are moving things forward, promoting body positive images and encouraging more women to participate in sport and exercise.
Wish I still had a copy of my paper. But it was done before the age of t'internet and flash drives.
