I'm on my 5th day going cold turkey and on a gluten free diet and its a bit of a nightmare and developing shitty withdrawal symptoms , the worst of which is my skin on my back especially itchy but in a horrible way its driving me bonkers. Has anyone else had to go through this ? Xx |

Just a guess, but I would say gluten products!
OP I know a few of my friends are gluten intolerant but they've never said anything about withdrawal symptoms |

I have had to reduce the gluten in my diet recently due to skin complaints and I find the worse culprit is ........ CAKE!!! Goddammit I love cake, not just like it, not just oh i could manage a slice, nope I flipping love cake, I probably need Cakes Anonymous.
All joking aside, it's hard work going cold turkey from gluten, it's in everything! I had always thought it was just bread, pasta, flour, but no its in more than we realise...soy sauce, pasta sauce, alcohol (not an issue for me as teetotal), cereal, vinegar etc etc.
If you've been diagnosed by the doctor they usually give you a prescription for products like bread and cereals and other basics.
For the skin, a good non scented moisturiser (double base is ideal) and maybe speak to GP about a steroid cream to help heal. |

Are you going gluten free because you have to OP or is it some faddy diet? My ex wife has suffered a severe gluten allergy for 30 years. You can get wheat free flour and pasta. She makes fabulous cakes and bread with it! The side effects don't last long when stopping eating gluten foods but a more serious side effect can be osteoporosis- not nice. Good luck to you. |

Lol faddy diet I wish ,I'm in a very rare club as I was born with celiac disease and lucky enough in my teens was able to add gluten to my diet successfully and have enjoyed not havingto restrict my diet , but things don't last for ever ...
Gluten is similar to opiates and the body becomes addicted to it so completely stop and withdrawal symptoms appear x |

Two of my children have coeliac disease and after diagnosis (several years ago now) we cut gluten from their diet overnight...the opposite to cold turkey happened - they immediately began to feel better, had more energy, their symptoms improved and the stomach pain disappeared. This is the first time I've ever heard of withdrawal symptoms and I personally know many coeliacs.
Gluten on it's own isn't addictive, nor is it similar to a opiate...the by-products of digested gluten can in extremely rare cases stimulate receptors in the brain into making a person addicted without realising, but no different to cutting out caffeine, chocolate, cheese etc from a diet.
If you feel withdrawal symptoms as severely as you say you would be better off speaking to your consultant and dietician. |

I don't...it's a total exaggeration
I'm very experienced in following a gluten free diet and someone is being overly dramatic |

99% of the population would be on a permanent high if this were true...the other 1% would be diagnosed coeliacs |

Coeliac disease is NOT an allergy to Gluten. It is an auto-immune disease whereby the body reacts to the presence of gluten by attacking itself.
My brother was diagnosed in 2009 and my Dad last year - and both are very well read up on the subject.
Regardless of the technicalities, it sucks.
Apparently, gluten free bread is disgusting, and it also means that take-away's are a no-no.
For example, Gluten is present in Soy Sauce.

I was going to make this point but didn't want to appear to point out the OP's ignorance any more than I may have already. Incredibly ill-informed post. |

I had no intention of accusing OP of being ignorant, especially as this is a very common mis-conception. My intention was simply to add a little clarity |

I do feel like a dumbass for asking what you were going cold turkey from but I've never heard anyone refer to it as that. I was picturing a crack head with a gluten allergy (no offence).
One of my friends is gluten intolerant, she's also a pharmacist. I'll ask her if she has any suggestions when I see her tomorrow.
My only suggestion is to wash the area with head and shoulders shampoo (not the 2in1). I know most of you will think that's a weird thing to do, but essentially that is exactly what it is designed for! It actually works wonders on dry skin. |

My point was a diagnosed coeliac would never refer to themselves as having a gluten allergy or intolerance, whereas it's understandable for a non-sufferer not to make the distinction...hence the OP is ill-informed of his/her condition. Particularly as even asymptomatic coeliacs follow a gluten-free diet to avoid anaemia and the increased risk of dermatitis, lymphoma and osteoporosis - therefore no way would one consume gluten because they can tolerate it! |

"Good news, gluten free cakes are available
not the same though"
Its much better now than it was in the past..... And cheaper too. Try different brands and bake your own. Crimbles chocolate macaroons and Asda chocolate brownie are delicious |
