Ethnicity filter - Racist?

The thought of one popped into my head, based upon the number of profiles I've read excluding certain ethnic groups, the question is, could it be legitimately claimed to be a racist feature?
Personally I wouldn't use one as I'm attracted to girls from all races, but I'm curious as to how such a feature would be perceived by others? |

Fab is a bit like online shopping (waits for the uproar) so why shouldn't you be able to filter as you personally know what you like. If it offends someone then they should look at themselves rather than ask the person to explain. |

How is that going to be racist? Racism is when someone receives abuse, ill treatment or seen inferior to other races. How does a filter do that?
Racism is when you receive messages from people saying:
- 'sorry, we don't meet people like you sick bastards'
- 'why the fuck are you fucking our women?'
- 'make sure you delete yourself off her friends list. Don't want her being friends with you lot'
- 'hope our soldiers wipe the lot off you off the face off the earth'
- 'this site isn't for you guys. Take your cock elsewhere'
...there's a lot more I used to get amongst those. And the ones above are not even as bad as the other messages I used to get.
That's an accumulation of four years i've been on the site. The chatrooms weren't good either. Those i'm chatting to used to be getting the abuse because they're talking to me.
I think that's what you call racism. All these filters and preferences of 'no asian men', 'white men only', 'BBC only' etc I don't think are racist at all, as well as the ethnicity filters on the browse function.

I think the real question is would it be racist for the site to implement such features, not whether people used them or not. For example... if Facebook implemented a "white friends only" option I'm sure that'd come under a whole lot of flack for facilitating racism. So perhaps in the end that's the core problem with the idea... it facilitates racism  |

The exclusion of people based on sexuality or race will mostly be genuine preference but I am confident that a small percentage will be homophobic or racist.
You just know by the way the exclusion is written, the tone says it all.
So a filter, takes away from the written word, it won't change anything else. |

you don't have to use the filter if you don't want to....... there is an option that says "prefer not to say" if you want to
if just means for you op that if someone specifically wanted a white person... you wouldn't show up on that search

I had no idea it had even been introduced, thought the OP was talking about an imaginary filter!
How have people been opted in to it though? It seems to be automatically set to 'Any'. |

I've just looked at our settings - it says 'please choose' under ethnicity.
Think I'll choose black. See how long it takes to get a message from someone telling me it's wrong.
Hopefully the click of a button won't change the colour of my knob or make it any bigger.

You can search by race the same as POF so why shouldnt you be able to put a message filter on! It doesnt have to say they cant message for a reason just sorry you cannot message this user |

Irrespective of whether a sexual preference in terms of colour is racist or not, from my own point of _iew there should be a filter.
I don't normally scan profiles for meets with women but I had a mad moment and decided to do so. Of the profiles of single women that met single men three in a row at the bottom of the profile had white only. I then later in the day read a thread, I liked the look of the OP, skimmed her profile and she met single men so I sent her message. Kindly enough she replied but said whites only and it was on her profile. Indeed it was but buried in the middle of a pageful of text.
Therefore to save genuine people's time, being people who have no desire to spend time reading profiles of people who are not interested them. The profile should say upfront who people will or wont meet.
By the way if I read another person saying that as they are straight if they wont sleep with a member of their own sex does it mean they are sexist. No it means you are straight because gay people dont sleep with members of the opposite sex and we dont say they are prejudiced. My understanding is that being straight, gay or bi is a person's nature other preferences are social constructs. |
