Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
I was watching the Williams sisters pitted against each other yesterday and it made me think about sibling rivalry.
Is it positive or poisonous (Miliband brothers come to mind)?
Have you experienced sibling rivalry?

As long as the siblings get on its fine. In fact it's healthy and I've used it to my (inevitably their) advantage with my twins even at a young age allowing them to progress much quicker than some other children their age. If there is any jealousy though it can easily go tits up. The disappointment of coming second has to be managed. |

I got it all the time from my mum she was always comparing me to my sisters and it caused arguments between us
I was never good enough she favoured my sisters over me because they were slim and good looking and had no problem telling me this
I stopped trying to compeat with them in the end because I knew I couldn't

It's parents who screw up children, not their brothers and sisters.
I have 4 daughters ... Yeah I know! and each is different, from their tastes in fashion, music and talents at school so I do not really see any sibling rivalry, they just fight occasionally because they can get on each others (and my) nerves. |

Loads of it, we're quite competitive in my family (mainly academically). I'm the cleverest one by far but they are too stupid to acknowledge it.
It's all good natured though, and we're proud of each other's achievements. So for me it's been a healthy thing, but I can imagine in some cases it goes too far. |

That made me laugh!!!
There's only 13 months between me & my sister but we are so different that there is no rivalry. I'm more Horrid Henry & she's more Perfect Peter. |

Hahahha I relate to this.... My dad, still to this day calls me fat. My sister is a barely a sliver. So I say to my dad, that he is lucky he has one of each and as an average has the perfect sized family. Although I have called it a day with my dad as he is too destructive to my life.
Oh and I used to batter my older smaller sister when I was younger, I was much smaller then so got away with it now I would crush her |

Your sisters colluded with your mother in telling you that you weren't as good as them? |

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum |
Me and my younger sister fought like cats, but we are all mates now, with different personalities and advantages (as well as disadvantages). Having shitty parents helped me and my sisters band together to stay sane. |

Not even the one fight over fancying the same person? It's the only real animosity my sister and I had when we were younger. It only last three weeks and then we were back to normal.

I relate to this. Except I didn't manage to stay sane. She did though and for that I am ever thankful.

They're not quite at that age yet and to be honest, the boy will "disappear" long before the fights start!! |

I fought with my sister until we were probably mid-20s. We were just so different she (ok, we) wound me (each other up). These days love her, and especially her sprogs, to bits x |

It's not the fight you have to watch for, it's the seething silence. |

Do you think you need the early difference to be able to come together now?

Oh god there has been sibling rivalry with my sister since early teens until I had my miscarriage and she was there every step of the way, there have been a few bumps in the road but I have to say she is the most amazing sister a girl could wish for. |

I have a sister and two brothers. Never any rivalry as such. Just sibling arguments. Me and my big sister have never really gotten on from a young age, completely different people in so many ways there is just no way we could ever get along with each other, one of my brothers we have our disagreements but we always make up and my youngest brother i get on with great and always have done. Even with my brothers they didnt really have any rivalry issues, just standard big bro little bro arguments.

No rivalry but my sister and I have never got on.
She went out with my first love to spite me, has ignored me in public and considers my lifestyle choices beneath her. Even once said "I don't speak to people I don't like". I call her Hyacinth Bucket
Luckily her kids love me and I get to be the fun Aunt |

It's fairly normal for siblings to compete and is healthier if out in the open, discussed etc. I've had some mild rivalry but am generally comfortable with myself. I've been a parent's favorite and that's bound to stir it. |

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire) |
Sibling rivalry fed by my poisonous mother here.
Both sisters, even with a massive age gap - 6 years older and 8 years younger.
Older one, academically gifted... younger one "her saviour and special baby" and me in the middle - the fuck up who should have been a boy (and was told every day by her and both sisters of this fact)
I grew up being a constant disappointment, and had it from her and my sisters. My older sister broke my nose when I was about 7 and I got punished for it...
We always were pitted against each other for everything - and I always lost.
I don't speak to my mother or older sister at all now, and very rarely to my younger one.
Life is too short for energy sapping people. |

We can't choose our relatives but we can choose our family.

I'm not entirely sure but we're at a good point now for which I'm extremely grateful. However, if we were discussing my displacement in the family pecking order since she gave our parents grandchildren I could go on for hours... It would be with a smile though (honestly!) |

No it was just an awkward tackle that I didn't protect myself properly from, got to give him his due instead of going on the beer with the lads after the game he came to hospital with me.... I'm not sure I would of been so considerate |

I used to be hockey captain for my schools team... My sister the captain of the rival schools team... We eventually both got kicked off the team for a fight on the pitch..
We were quite bad at home...And we fought like mad...
However I would do anything for her.... My other sisters I wouldn't spit on if they were on fire. No rivalry just don't like who they are . |

In our family roles, my younger brother was the good looking one who was easygoing, naturally charming, outgoing and easy to like. I was the clever one. In terms of rivalry we were so different as personalities there wasn't any and most of the time we were pretty good mates. He was mischievous though and liked winding me up; I was bossy with a quick temper so knock down physical fights were a regular occurrence until he reached 13 or so and was a foot taller than me seemingly overnight. As we've got older I see more similarities in our personalities and outlooks on life. Although I am still the slightly overprotective big sister. |
