Over the decades I've often been eyed up by gay men, and even asked if I'm gay by a few, I politely say, ' I'm not, but if that changes, I'll be in touch', we laugh and that's that, but I've seen some men get angry, abusive and physically violent when their sexuality is questioned. Why, if a man is so sure of his hetrosexuality, does he get so violent towards gay men, could it be that he isn't actually that sure, and fears exposure? Your thoughts please. |

"No one on here has, I mean friends, relatives and people I've seen when I'm out, seems to be a lot of aggression towards gay men, doesn't make sense."
No and no. I haven't seen it.
Is it the company you keep?

See your point OP, in some cases it does appear that agressively disliking something can denote a deep untouched desire for it, but its neither limited to sexual choice nor is it the same for all, some will genuinly dislike due to compliance with social convention or childhood influences but both translate simply to misguided belief,
We should not generalise that a certain reaction means a certain thing
The actual question is how can people be educated so that others can be free to live within their own life choices without fear of retribution,

Yes. Ghey lesboids. You're highly likely to get it if you've sat next to another human of the same sex. Don't even need to touch. It's in the air. |

Why are people asking if you're gay? I don't go up to women and ask if they're gay! It would matter anyway... Obviously I'd convert them...
Gay Man "hello"
OP" hello"
Gay Man "are you gay"
OP "no, but if that ever changes I will let you know"
Gay Man & OP "ha ha ha ha ha"
Gay Man "bye"
OP "bye"
What odd conversations you must have.

I think that to some people being called gay is an insult, there is still a large section of society that considers being gay unmanly.
So therefore if they are approached and asked if they are gay, what they believe the person is really saying is you look unmanly.
This then illicites a violent response.
Is this a sign of insecurity in their own manhood possibly or it could be more a sign of small mindedness |

Maybe, or they maybe small minded bigggots.
A lot of people use the expressions "gay, poof, fairy" as an insult |

If you know someone is stright and you take it upon yourself to make advances toward them and you are gay then it's Russian roulette take your gamble but don't cry about being rejected. |

I'm talking about the violence side of things, a general rejection just means they're not interested. No need for violence. |

I know there are a lot of people on fab who are bi, and that's fine. But if some one initiates unwanted sexual attention then they should expect an adverse response.
This goes for straight men towards straight women.
Gay guys towards straight guys.
The only difference is that if it's a guy getting the unwanted attention he's likely to give a thick lip |

He was 'dressed like a fairy' vs 'this little fairy'.
It's pretty diminutive at best and offensive at worst - like if I was to refer to you as 'some muscle mary'. You *might* look like that but then you *might* not like that description.

Roll your eyes as much as you like, but people (women as well as men) get defensive when faced by unwanted sexual advances.
You talk of freedom of expression, but what about freedom from sexual harassment |

I'm just about as blind to gay advances as to female advances. Once had a wonderful night with this stranger (guy) that I bumped into in a pub. We hit it off and had tonnes of laughs together... that was until he asked me if I wanted to come to the loos with him. I naively looked puzzled and repeated the question, utterly mythed as to why I would want to go to the loos with a male friend. Then the penny dropped lol After that, unsurprisingly, things weren't quite the same, although there was only embarassment on my behalf no friction... it turns out my new friend was out looking to get some action and I didn't really qualify ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

I'm just saying I think your reaction was inappropriate.
There is 'freedom to' and then there is 'freedom from'. Your freedom of speech does not include the right to verbally or physically attack people.
And a big, strong man, secure in his own sexuality you should have no problems with this.
Relax.
Breath deeply.
Let all the negativity flow away.

Grunching here.
The person getting aggressive may have had a bad childhood experience and a man coming on to them may trigger an aggressive response.
Never criticize a man until you've walked a mile in his moccasins. |

"I seem to attract gay men. Im fully opposite though.
on one occasion this little fairy (and I say thatcos he was wearing a headband with antenna on and glittery fairy wings) sat on me knee at a manchester bar randomly. I flipped. No reason for it. I just flipped. Wasnt even d*unk.
Anyone would flip if someone just randomly sat on their lap
I wouldnt be too impressed if a pissed woman did it also to be fair "
And I'm "not too impressed" if someone of either sex comes on to me in an inappropriate way either, on other threads this has made me a raging feminist harpy, apparently.
But the way to react to it is not violence or threat of violence, that's not ok, just as it's not ok for anyone to make persistent unwanted sexual advances. |

"Roll your eyes as much as you like, but people (women as well as men) get defensive when faced by unwanted sexual advances.
You talk of freedom of expression, but what about freedom from sexual harassment
If a woman came on to you in an unwanted way, would you think it acceptable to 'give her a thick lip'?"
Personally I wouldn't get violent with anyone, I never said it was acceptable to give some one a thick lip. But this is the real world it's not fluffy and safe some people are violent and that's a fact |

"I jumped up....he fell off my knee. I went mad.
I wonder if your statement would be the same if I sat on a womans knee pissed up and atarted breathing perversely down here ear.
Very much doubt you'd tell the woman she was acting inappropriate"
Think I would... If you're out of line, trust me, I'll say so. |

Pretty sure you wrote "The only difference is that if it's a guy getting the unwanted attention he's likely to give a thick lip"
And I spent 10 years working with difficult, disturbing and sometimes dangerous behaviour in London. Mental health, drugs and drink.
I'm quite aware that the world isn't a fluffy place. |

I did write that but I can clarify, if it's a guy getting unwanted attention from another guy.
It still doesn't make it right tho |

Agreed, it doesn't make it right. But the sex of the person is irrelevant.
I usually find a firm 'No thank you', hand on arm and fixed look in the eye works just fine. |

There is 'freedom to' and then there is 'freedom from'. Your freedom of speech does not include the right to verbally or physically attack people.
"
Telling someone to take a hike after they sat on your knee uninvited is acceptable for me. Ok I might control how I said it ( I say might as I don't know for sure )but I would still be saying this is my space, get out of it |

I have never been described as a macho cock before....but I can do what I wanted if someone invaded my space.
I would like to think I would be calm about it, but I wasn't when a man grabbed my boob. |

"Over the decades I've often been eyed up by gay men, and even asked if I'm gay by a few, I politely say, ' I'm not, but if that changes, I'll be in touch', we laugh and that's that, but I've seen some men get angry, abusive and physically violent when their sexuality is questioned. Why, if a man is so sure of his hetrosexuality, does he get so violent towards gay men, could it be that he isn't actually that sure, and fears exposure? Your thoughts please."
My people have a saying "where intelligence stops, violence starts". Some men don't understand male homosexuality and are frightened by what they don't understand. I would imagine the kind of men that get violent toward the idea of gay contact are the kind of men who have difficulty sitting on a toilet the right way round. |
