My New Mate !

Well he must be

I just phoned a restaurant to make a booking tonight and everything from this youthful sprog was "yes mate, no mate, thanks mate" etc.

Are people taught how to have a phone conversation today ?

And more importantly is that how you speak to a customer?

Or am I being an old pedant ?

If it's a posh resturaunt, I'd be surprised if staff were allowed to speak that way to customers...

Our local Indian takeaway calls everyone either "Boss" or "Queen" but I don't think I'd expect it from a resturaunt.

One of my pet hates too, I had this in the bar of a 5 star hotel and told the young man in question in no uncertain terms. It's disrespectful!

I would never call anyone mate when on the phone at work. But I'd never call them sir either.

Yep, annoys me too when someone 'mates' me. I'm not their mate, I just want some decent service!

Is this the grumpy old man club?!?!???

Perhaps a relaxed and informal atmosphere is what the proprietor is aiming for.

Well it's a popular, large chain restaurant, they're supposed to be a bit cheeky

But I think this was a bit over familiar

Titz Towers, North Notts

I used to irritate a boss when I worked in a call centre by calling people 'me duck' but most of the customers liked it, as they knew it wasn't a robot, but an actual person.
