I know someone who has had one. She's also still fairly overwieght but not morbidly obese any more and her life has improved since losing weight (especially her mobility).

I know of two women and it has worked well for them, other than the loose skin......which is why I wouldn't have one.

I would have one if my quality of life was that bad that being overweight was a problem.

I did used to be 16 and a half stone, struggled to get up out of an armchair and that was a point where my life was being affected by being overweight. I dieted (starved myself actually i was that desperate to lose weight) so didn't need a band or anything, but if i needed one i would have one. There can be complications too, so that's something to think about.

No I wouldn't.

I know a lady who had one, kept the weight off for 3 years (the nhs guidelines before they remove the excess skin). Then about 2 years post skin operation, she's massive again

In my opinion you need to change the mindset, not just Ice the cake.

Sorry but all these surgeries do is reduce the amount you physically can't eat.

You can achieve the same thing much more safely by simply not shovelling as much into your face.

After the surgery you could still eat small volumes of very high calorie foods (full of refined sugars and fats) and still stay fat or even gain weight.

Changing your intake to a more healthy composition is a more sensible idea that having someone cut you open and stick an elastic band around your stomach.

You need to work out what the cause is though? Treat the mind stuff. There's lots of reasons why people over eat. It's will power at the end of the day. Unfortunately, it's much easier to put weight on than lose it! Sod's law it's called !!

They work for some people and not for others. As someone said yes they limit your food intake, by eating smaller amounts but if you continue to eat sugary or fatty food you will not achieve the weight loss. I get slated a lot for having mine done saying its a quick fix diet. Far from it. Having a band doesn't mean quick fix diet at all. And no I didn't cost the nhs. I paid private for mine. What I will say is think long and hard before you decide to have one done

My aunt had one probably about 20 years ago. She must have been a size 32 minimum and she couldn't walk from one end of the room to the other without getting out of breath. She did suffer with quite a lot of mental health issues too and just kept piling on weight.

Yes she lost a lot and kept it off, but I spent a lot of time with her after her op which was enough to put me off ever considering one. Seeing what she had to eat (pureed food, starting off with ice cube sized portions). Seeing and hearing the results of eating too much. Even now she can't eat much at a time which is of course the idea but she gets little warning of if her stomach has decided it's too much and she's off to be sick. And 'too much' now could be half a chicken breast.

Prep food for each day at th3 start if the week/month freeze/Store only eat that each day

Don't buy anything and keep it in the cupboards just what's going in the prepared meals.

It's often easier to stop yourself buying the extra food than eating what's there.

Plus even if you eat the next days "snacks" one day you'll miss out on them tomorrow/the end of the week or month and it all balances out

Some people look very weird and usually a lot older once they have one. I guess it's because of the fairly rapid weight loss that it's just a shock when you see them.

Though I might be a little biased as I like a more curvier woman.

You tried the suggestion I posted above?

Or another I've found to be great.

Sit down with your meal. Take 1/5th of it off (evenly so 1/5th of each item)

Do that each meal for a few weeks till you get used to the smaller sizes and start trying to serve to the same size you were with the reduction.

But the planning out and having a set amount to eat each day is a very good one.

For you personally why do you over ewt/can't stick to a diet?

sadly its not a straight forward n clean cut as that. ive a very very slow metabolism that endocrinologists are confused by.. essentially i could eat anything and gain weight. the complicated bit also comes because i have not a lot of energy but such a huge mass i actually need to eat more in able to function.

if i had a magic wand i would instantly shed 15 stone and give mýself a fighting chance as my body wouldnt have to work so hard on a daily basis

So a gastric band would be totally useless to you.

Could always try the old ECA or clen if your hearts up to it.

Both effective and proven.

Have you ever tried a diet like Lighter Life or Cambridge Weight Plan? They work on ketosis and can work great with people in similar situations as yourself.

I only know if two people who have had a gastric band/surgery.

Both, in this case, were completely undeserving (never bothered trying to lose weight on their own - God forbid they'd have to eat less and exercise more!).

One is still his original weight (32st) because he expected it to do all the work and still forced his 4-person-worthy portioned meals down his throat, so has managed to stretch his stomach even more.

No it is not as simple as that.

B used to be 28stone, she even went into hospital for a while under a very strick diet/excersise regime and she came out 1 stone heavier than she went in. This was apparantly due to medication she had to take which slowed her metabolism down.

About ten years later she had a gastric bypass and lost 18 stone.

I cannot say if a band works (or even a sleeve) in the same way as a bypass but the bypass surgery has an effect on the brain as well.

She since surgery cannot even stand the smell of certain foods now, just the smell can make her physically sick.

Any quantity of pork makes her sick even if she is not told she is having pork she will be sick after one mouthful.

She can eat cold poultry but cannot stand the smell of poultry cooking.

However these operations do not work for everyone of the four women who had the operation the same day as B she is the only one to keep the weight off and has done for the last 16 years.

Can I please clarify that I PAID to have my gastric band. None of it was funded by the nhs.I so wish people would read posts properly. To all those who sent me nice messages Thanku for your kind words and support. But you alwas get one or two bad apples who take it upon themselves to be abbusive, saying I have wasted nhs money. I didn't waste nhs money. It was my own money, and I personally didn't waste my own money as I feel it has improved my health and quality of life.

I don't think I'd have one as it does nothing to change the psychology behind why I over eat. That to me is the crux of the matter but is rarely addressed by the NHS.

I know I should wat less,I try to eat less but I have issues with food that I need to redress and cutting down the size of available stomach will not do that. That is why so many bariatric surgeries fail and people put the weight back on again.

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire)

I went to my doctor as a size 26, 46GG, weighing 29 and a half stone, 5 years ago in January 2010. I was miserable, depressed and felt so tired all the time. I'd also just split up from my husband who had told me my body post pregnancy with our son disgusted him, and before we had split he moved out of the bedroom as he could not cope sleeping next to such a hideous blimp (uhm yeah, he was a nice guy)

He offered me a gastric band, and told me I was an ideal candidate as I was obviously morbidly obese and in danger of dying early.

I walked out of that appointment in tears, worried about the future and my son.

Went home, cried my eyes out, but decided I was going to change it around.

I went through the cupboards and tidied out everything high calorie - so crisps, biscuits, pop, white pasta, white rice, anything tinned and highly refined went. I decided to eat dinner from a smaller plate, and drink more water. I also bought an exercise DVD on amazon at the suggestion of a friend.

Started doing the DVD at home in the living room in my jammies when me son was in bed. First time I was on the floor, crying before the warm up was even finished - I could not do it. Next day, I tried again... ad nauseum (literally some days)

Now roll on 5 years, I've lost over 18 stone, now a size 10/12, a 32DD, and have recently trained as a gym instructor as well as holding down my day job.

I do not do elimination, so no food is a sin - I'd crave it too much, and don't follow fads. I cook from scratch wherever possible, and eat clean the majority of the time. I drink plenty of water, and have been told so often now that I do not look anywhere near 38. I still use cream and butter, full fat products (in moderation) and have chocolate, sweets and crisps (again in moderation) and feel so much better.

I am so glad I did not take the option of the gastric band, and instead took the decision to take control myself.

Its not been easy, but its been the best thing I have ever done.

I don't know anyone with one and I would rather not have one.

That said, if I had a coalition of multiple conditions - severe obesity - that was likely to cause my death, and other weight loss measures weren't working, I'd be foolish not to consider it.

I agree that the result of the surgery will depend on the effort you're willing to put afterwards. I heard (from a endocrino friend) of a patient who was on a liquid diet post-op and was not losing weight. Turns out the reason was she was melting choc bars and drinking them too .

I know a lady who had one,, awful loose skin which disables her as much as being overweight did, plus she lost her hair and nails because her body couldn't take on enough nuteriants to keep her healthy, she also suffered bleeding gums, although not sure this was as a result of the band, she's still overweight but most of that is loose skin which the NHS won't support with and she can't afford the surgery

I have one and lost 6 stones in 2 years...

Then the band started to eat into the wall of my stomach making me very, very ill. I had it loosened and yes, I've put on quite a bit, but not all, back.

Those of you that think it's the easy way out, it's bloody hard, life is not the same and the pain, refluxing, sickness....

Would I do it again? Hell yes!

Choose your surgeon carefully research the after care, travel if necessary... it's a huge decision, don't simply go with the cheapest.

My partner were offered it several years ago. After researching the side affects he decided that he'd rather do it naturally. I think he's lost about eight stone over the last couple of years, and still has another couple to go before he's happy.

One of his friends has had a gastric band done. He lost all the weight, but then put it all back on when he had the band removed. He was fucking miserable with it on as well, because he couldn't eat anything he wanted to. He's no fitter because he never had the energy to do any exercise.

Don't forget as well that this is major surgery. I had a laprascopic sterilisation last year (which is performed under general anaesthetic). I'm only really just recovering from it fully a year later. For three months I had symptoms resulting from the general anaesthetic. To have a gastric band fitted you have to go under general anaesthetic (which is very dangerous if you're obese as well) and then something like 50% of people have to have it removed later due to complications.

Having been through surgery myself, and understanding that this was really quite dangerous for me even as a slim and very healthy person, I'd have to ask why anyone with higher risks would consider putting themselves through that. I used to do GP referral personal training years ago where we were working with people to help them lose enough weight to not die under general anaesthetic so that they could have surgery for cancer and so forth. It was heartbreaking. There must be better alternatives to putting yourself through that.

I lost 7 stone put it back on due to illness so now on the journey to losing it again, I use Herbalife alongside a high protein , low carb eating plan, and when I stick to it I can lose 2-3 lbs a week but I look at the inch loss more which I get from drinking a minimum of 2 litres of water a day, it really is all down to what you eat and basic exercise will help toning, i'm very limited on the exercise I can do but every little bit helps

I have had two friends die from having this operation and another friend ended up in intensive care after being fitted with a sleeve instead of a band.

I'm loosing two pounds a week on the myfitnesspal app. Less calories and more exercise = a slimmer me. I will be a fat bugger for ages, but at least I'm doing it in a way I'm safe way.

Northampton Somewhere

I used to work with a lady who had one fitted, as did her hubby, they both lost a lot of weight quite quickly but did have a few problems along the way.

Since when has obesity become a problem in the UK?

Compared to the USA your food portions are smaller. All I was offered was tea and biscuits whenever I went to someone's house.

Also I found I lost weight when I'm over there , because I drink more than I eat.

I'm not attacking anyone who is overweight. I just didn't see any obese people during my visits to the UK.

"I've always wanted one x

Neither of you need one.

Thank.Trust me I (female) could do with one. At 5ft 2 and 14 stone I'm seriously over weight, I just have pics taken at good angles x"

I'm nine and a half stone and 5ft. I'm still a healthy weight.

Honestly. You don't need one. You need to do some exercise and eat better, rather than changing the course of the rest of your life with surgery.

"I went to my doctor as a size 26, 46GG, weighing 29 and a half stone, 5 years ago in January 2010.

Its not been easy, but its been the best thing I have ever done."

Reminds of someone's celebrity catchphrase.

"That's the way you do it."

As said, not easy but it works.

Or the alternative, as practised to be school years cohort, PREVENTION is better than cure.

By and large, we are still in the "denial" stage.

Plus, as we don't have your amendment rights, we run the ridk of "hate" crime if we mention someone is excessive fat.

Some are not slow to take umbrage, just too slow to eat less/better and exercise more.

I would only ever want one if there was some reason it was the only way I'd lose weight.

I'm fat because I'm fucked up about food, constricting my stomach wouldn't change that and I'd probably be one of those people who ended up sabotaging myself.

It does obviously work for some people so should be available where appropriate, but I'd like to see counselling offered as an alternative for some too.

Perhaps we have less visible "extreme" obesity. I'm obese. Someone who weighs 30 stone is also obese. Maybe more of the British obese are of the kind like me rather than the extreme examples.

no matter

"would you have one? do you know anyone that's had one? did it work for them?"

Yes I have known a few .. You do have to completely change your eating habits to get results and take plenty of vitamins. You still have to be strong minded to make it work.

A good idea would be to join something like the FB gastric band group . They are very friendly with lots of support . Not a great deal of negativity. I joined as I wanted info before I considered it. I see now that its not for me but I do appreciate that its a good thing for some.

However I have personally known two people that died

with the bi pass surgery . one with a bad infection related to the op and the other had a blood clot move to lung which killed her in two weeks after her op.

I have seen some brilliant results tho on FB.

Thank you. You're what we consider thick here. Morbid Obese are people that are bed ridden and have to get around on scooters. For examples Google people of Walmart to see my nations finest.

I've been called thick before and thought they meant stupid. Or maybe they did

Back on topic though, yes I think we still have far fewer in this country of the morbidly obese than the U.S. although by all accounts numbers are increasing.

Thanks, I'm 3.5 stone above my healthy BMI weight though so that still makes me feel a bit crap, even though I've lost 3 stone! x

I would just like to say to all the people on here who have lost weight, how ever they have done it. WELL DONE.

I have been advised to have a gastric band (I don't want 1) I have tried several ways to lose weight. I know in my own head that I need to exercise more but I don't want to go to a gym I hate been outside because of the looks off people so what do I do, I close the door on the world and eat, it's a vicious cycle. My partner try to be support I suggest healthier options for tea he says order a pizza. I know I should be taking control but I can't seem to find it in side of me.

Something has to give somewhere. You want to lose weight and you know it's not going to happen doing what you are now. So there has to be a change. I was petrified of exercising outside because people can be awful. So I shut myself inside and did workout DVDs. Then when I got a little confidence I found a quiet place to go jogging. And you know what? There's someone else there doing the exact same thing.

Let your husband have his pizza. You can plan your meals a week at a time, shop for that list and eat those meals. That removes the 'what shall we have for tea' problem.

Got a spare room?

For the price of a years gym subscription you can make a pretty decent home gym.

But better than that Google dumbell thrusters.

When you start out you don't even need dumbbells fill some old milk or water bottles with water (1 litre of water = 1kg) to use.

Thrusters are simple, easy and brutally effective especially if you do them HIIT style but leave that for now.

For now focus on doing them slowly steadily and with good form.

Whenever your bored or have some energy grab the bells and just do some for a few minutes or longer make games of can I do so many before the washing machine ends or before the advert break finishes etc.

Fantastic exercises that also build a Lovely bum :p

Well done for losing the 3 stone I would kill for a figure like yours so I would worry about your weight and I'm sure everyone else would agree x
