A man has been beheaded and at least one other person injured in a suspected Islamist attack on a gas factory near the French city of Lyon.
There were several small explosions, possibly caused by gas canisters, at the Air Products factory in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier, sources said.
A man has been arrested by anti-terror police, officials say.
Reports suggest two attackers drove into the factory carrying a flag with Arabic writing on it.
French President Francois Hollande will leave the EU summit in Brussels this afternoon and return to France. He is expected to give a news conference before travelling.
Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve is said to be on his way to the scene.
The attack occurred around 10:00 local time (08:00 GMT), according to local media.
According to French regional newspaper Le Dauphine Libere, a man was seen driving back and forth in front of the target building earlier this morning.
The man in custody has no ID papers and has refused to talk to anti-terrorism police, reports French broadcaster BFM TV. |

I'd say they should bring back the guillottine for these sort of acts but that'd only martyr the misguided that commit these acts in their twisted interpretation of a faith that doesn't teach this idiom at all |

we're in a catch-22 tho, our past has fuelled the divide and western interference and manipulations to gain access to mineral reserves and such have added to it. You can't fight hate with hate, but a warm hug ain't gonna fix it either.
Alex Salmon on question time the other day put it quite well, maybe its time to apologise for some of the past wrongs like the illegal war in Iraq... |

I'm pretty sure an apology isn't going to fix anything either. Everybody in that part of the world have strong agendas which cannot be fixed. Should never have poked our noses in the first place.
However it's now the worlds problem. Can't see a solution sadly. |

it ain't gonna fix it in one go, no, but the west is probably seen as arrogant because we don't. We may believe in forgiveness in our warm comfy bubble, but persecuted peoples will rarely see it this way.
Islam used to be a leading light in the progress of science, culture etc, but localised cultural influences have ground it to a standstill and into regression. Man manipulates religion to control peoples, true of every religion out there and now we've a very polarised world.
Hopefully some of these leaders will find a way forward, but shaking a big stick will just add fuel to the fire and that seems to be the more usual approach from the big bully nations like the US. |

Nothing to worry about, just isolated incidents!,we will be told!.
They have mental health issues and it is nothing to do with Islam we will be asured by our leader,Mr Cameron will re asure us (Again!) that Islam is a peacefull Religion!.
These "Isolated incidents" seem to be happening quite regular now in Europe and we are assured it is nothing to do with Islam even though the attackers are all Moslems!.

it isn't islam that teaches violence, in the same way that christianity didn't teach us to go on crusades killing muslims. The problem is the way religion gets twisted by those who want to wield power and instill hatred toward others, extremism exists in all the world's major religions. Islam has its own "civil war" going on too, Sunni/Shia at odds about the true faith. |

Enough is enough. The Tunisians will have a tough job preventing this in the future but I think the French will react quite robustly. |

What's your definition of an illegal war?"
really?
What was the real reason for the invasion of Iraq?
Iraq attacked Kuwait because it was illegally tapping their oil. They warned Kuwait but they ignored and continued. Of course the US then backed it's puppet and retaliated against Iraq. And like a good puppy the UK helped.
The UK and US had no business going in there, especially not a second time for GW to finish what daddy had started.
What was a stable if oppressive regime has been replaced with chaos as a result and now tipped the muslim states into what may become a religious war that impacts us all. Democracy is great but isn't the answer for all nations but the west seems to want to impose this ideal without looking to the lessons of history. |

most of the arab states are/were governed tribal regions, with a strong leader in dictatorial position. Depose that leader and you have chaos which is what the west keeps doing, a catastrophic policy to follow again and again.
Libya - essentially 3 divides which won't easily co-exist
Iraq - much the same
Syria - Sunni/Shia
Iran/Iraq - again shia/sunni opposing each other across a border
etc
Sure an apology won't produce an instant fix, but continuing the way we have done will certainly fuel the crisis till it explodes in our faces - oh wait, it already did.
It's true that financial power/gain is a major driving force, it's the reason the US and others are so keen to have compliant leaders so they can have better terms, disregarding the interests of the peoples in these countries. The west was quick to arm Iraq when they wanted Iran subjugated then turned against them later. |

So basically they used the riots as a way to hide in plain site.
It's sad, it only a mattter of time it comes over here because they want to make international headlines.
Whatever happened to "thou shall not kill?" Shall only God can be a judge, these people are not muslim but people who want to know what it feels like to kill.
I am sure some are tired of the unrealistic killing in videos games and want to know what they real thing feels like. |

To be honest. Take a step back. Have a look at the way an incident receives media coverage.
A white guy in America who does the same is a 'lone wolf' and 'mentally unstable'. However, a 'Muslim' guy who suddenly does this and the coverage is portrayed very differently.
It's convenient how all this occurs one after the other so as to divert attention away from one thing.
Just saying.

it's like a hydra, each of their heads you chop off another 2 will appear to replace it. Eye for an eye just isn't gonna fix anything. Best to capture and jail than kill them, so depriving them of the martyrdom they seek |

I have an open mind and respect your opinion pops but disagree. I don't think it's linked just an attack orchestrated to inspire terror with its own agenda based on a perversion of belief.
The other chap in America however I do agree and he committed an attack based on terror agenda so he would in affect be a terrorist in my mind. |

Like I always say. We do need to look at what drives someone to commit these acts. Sometimes we just add fuel to the fire without realising or sometimes even knowingly.
I'm in favour of bringing the death sentence back. As controversial as it may be for many (and quite off topic) but as a deterrant, I think it would work. Make people think twice.

erm, I don't think you'll find that Ireland is part of the UK, only the invaded part in the north. Hence my comment earlier.
I'm not saying I agree with the IRA's activities, had a few near misses from some of them myself, but I can see why they would. During the great wars locals in occupied areas did similar things to help fight against the invader, in Afghanistan the mujahadin successfully did the same to the might russian army. |

Deter people who are already planning to kill themselves or extremely likely to be killed in the attack?
Or like America, where many states have the death penalty but the Boston bomber still went ahead (and has been sentenced to death)?
There's an argument (which I disagree with) that the death penalty should be used as a punishment for the most heinous crimes but I don't think many would consider it much of a deterrent. |

Ireland was under British rule near enough from 1100.
The south was ceded in 1920 odd into the Irish free state.
The north remained British and mostly protestant.
Gerry Adams is British... He had a seat in Westminster as a British citizen, the problem was a selection of religious British citizens arguing over who's religion should dominate! |
