Belfast

Went for a wee bite in a local bakery / cafe that I'll not name but will say won't bake you a Bert & Ernie cake with a pro gay marriage slogan on.

To get quickly to my point. A can to take away is 80p and if you sit in is £1.30. A bottle of water to take away is £1 or £1.65 to sit in!

I think this is shocking. I've never seen a mark-up like that in my life. Am I naive or is this normal?

That's horrific. Although due to aforementioned cake incident I wouldn't part with a penny in their direction, but that's just me.

Menston near Ilkley

The biggest factor will be V.A.T. then there is overheads, heating, lighting, wear and tear etc.

Glasses and straws were there past the till for you to help yourself.

They also have a cold water tap next to the glasses where you can help yourself to water free of charge!

Ask for the gay discount.

partly.... its was kinda called the "greggs tax" a bit back... where if you get food and leave the shop there is no VAT charged.... whereas if you get food and sit down in the shop you are charged VAT......its one of those weird anomalies...

the rest... yes.. overheads i am guessing....

Overheads that the establishment in question has to pay regardless of whether you eat in or eat out.

McDonalds used to charge less for take out many years ago, but the difference was attributable to V.A.T in that take out food was not subject to it whereas food consumed on the premises was. Or at least that was my understanding, however, there is no longer any difference in price.

Don't pay it. Shop elsewhere, especially in the light of their anti gay stance.

Central

It seems a rip off for take away drinks alone, and in house surcharge for probably a shit establishment would not be worth it.

Their bigot's stance would mean I'd boycott them anyway.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

There is always an eat-in price and take-away price.

Cold food to take-away is zero rated for VAT but has VAT if you eat-in. Hot take-away is at 20% VAT. The business will also charge for you sitting at their tables to cover their overheads for clearing away etc.

Just avoid them in future, a sensible cafe would sell at a standard price or a more attractive price for sit ins, hoping you'd stay there and order more.

Not supporting them but those seem fairly typical prices. I wouldn't be paying them but then I'm a tight ass. (Well so I was told last night! Do you think they'd serve me there?)
